  • Surat Hud [11:7]

And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days - and His Throne had been upon water - that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed. But if you say, "Indeed, you are resurrected after death," those who disbelieve will surely say, "This is not but obvious magic." [11:7]

Allah's throne was upon water before the creation of the heavens and the earth? What does that mean?

And those who disbelieved will then say, " Our Lord, show us those who misled us of the jinn and mankind ,so we may put them under our feet that they will be among the lowest."

Why does there have to be a container?
We do not knowthe laws of that universe where that water is.
We believe nonetheless, and these matters may become clear on the Day of Judgement when we are before Allah AWJ.

"discovery shows that water has been prevalent in the universe for nearly its entire existence".

Allah knows best, however there are narration(s) that the rivers of paradise flow from underneath or from his throne(can't remember exactly.) Firdaws is the highest garden in Jannah(which has many gardens) and it is under the throne of Allah aza wa jal.

What exactly "his throne was over the water" means is not of our knowledge and whatever Allah and His Messenger did not detail on is not for us to hair-split about. We must focus on our own ends which are arriving very very soon.
