  • Islam and Violence

Hello all, a little background information first; I am an American atheist, although I was raised in a Christian family and many of my close friends are Christians.
The question I have is one I am sure you are asked very frequently, so I apologize in advance if it is monotonous or a bother to repeatedly answer it, but I am genuinely interested in hearing your responses.
In the specific culture I was raised in (and I presume a large percentage of America as well) Islam has been unfairly portrayed as a religion of violence. I have had conversations with generally intelligent people who ignorantly refer to "jihad" and claim that Islam is charged with a holy duty to be violent towards non-believers.
So my specific question is this: how do you respond to people who believe these ideas? What exactly are the Islamic beliefs regarding violence and the oft-quoted "jihad"? (I admit to being shamefully ignorant of the true teachings, only having heard hearsay.)

With that said, I sincerely hope nothing I said comes off as irreverent or disrespectful to Islam or anyone here, I respect everyone's beliefs and I only ask this with the intention of gaining insight into what is actually taught and believed by the majority of Muslims.

        Re: Islam and Violence

Our prophet peace be upon him ordered us in WARS not to cut a tree so what about humans... This should be enough for any person who wants to follow the right path. I hope the media touches on our brothers in Africa who are been killed by extremists too or the children who are dying in Ghaza.....
Sorry I dont carry a conversation nor an argument with a sister. I just put my point of view in general for everybody and it is up to you to take it or leave it.

Plenty of people considered "intelligent" arrive at non intelligent conclusions.
Their opinions have no bearing on truth.
