Furthermore, Zayd Ibn Haritha (ra) was from Najd in Saudi Arabia and was kidnapped as a youngster by another Arab tribe thus being sold into slavery before the advent of Islam.

Not saying the institution of slavery is a good thing but your contentions aren't valid imo.
Arabs did own non-Black slaves. That's clear. But owning non-Black slaves while inventing race-based slavery are not mutually exclusive.

The Portuguese and the Spaniards are apples, and were rotten at that time, but the Arabs were humans. They did not enslave like the other two and after Islam, the salves under Arabs had many rights.

Perhaps he is debating some atheists on the matter and needed the information,

Perhaps he is a non-Muslim seeking to convert and curious about this matter,

Perhaps somebody asked him the question and he was unsure how to answer it,

JazakAllah. I thought it was odd that someone, let alone another Muslim, would find learning not only history but, sharia would be considered irrelevant if it does not affect us at this very moment in time.

Also thanks to everyone else who has posted, especially the links above. Much appreciated.
