"And some of the Fuqaha' and 'Ibn Abi Layla, may Allah have mercy on them, said that it is permissible to eat all that is similar to fish- frogs, crayfish, sea snakes, sea dogs and sea pigs, and similar creatures, however with proper slaughter; and it is the view of al-Layth bin Sa'd as well..."

        Bida'i as-Sana'i, by al-Kasani 5/35.

"And it is disliekd to kill frogs if they cause no harm. If they cause harm, it is permitted, if one is not able to avoid it; otherwise, it is recommended not to kill them. And it is permissible to eat them with proper slaughter if it is a land-based [frog]."

        Hashiyat as-Sawi, 4/772

"And Ibn al-Qasim said on authority of Malik- there is no harm in eating frogs..."

        Mukhtasar Ikthilaf il-Ulama' by at-Tahawi, 3/213
"And it is not permissible to eat frogs according to the majority except the Malikis, due to the prohibition of the Prophet SAWS on killing frogs..."

        Fiqh al-Islam wa Adillatihi by az-Zuhayli, 4/2593.

I can confirm that the Hanafis, Shafi'ees and Hanbalis all prohibit eating frogs while the Malikis allow it as well as several of the Salaf who had their own school.

So there is not a consensus on the prohibition. Allah knows best.

IslamWeb seems to say that as well.

The hikmah of not killing the frog is that its croaking is tasbiiH.

al-Bayhaqi narrated from عبد الله بن عمرو (may Allaah pleased with both of them) that he said: Do not kill the frog, for indeed its croaking is tasbiih.

al-Haafiz actually said that the narration above [narrated by al-Bayhaqi] is authentic in chain but Abd Allaah bin 'Amr is known to narrate israa'iiliyyaat narrations.

There are different `Ilal, or reasons, given behind the prohibition. Based on the differing `Ilal, the Malikis arrived at a different conclusion than the other schools. The`Ilal for the prohibition of killing frogs mentioned by the Malikis has to do with the circumstances behind the Ahadith involved. Here, an-Nafarawi al-Maliki mentions that frogs make a form of Tasbeeh and even that frogs were among the animals which attempted to extinguish the fire which was kindled against Ibrahim AS. The Imam mentions that is the `Ilah behind the Karahah or dislike of killing frogs, i.e. as pests. He says: "The case of dislike applies as long [the frogs involved] cause no harm, otherwise it is permissible to kill them when it is unavoidable. If one is able to avoid doing so, it is recommended to not kill them, as was mentioned about ants." [al-Fawakih ad-Dawani, 2/352] This command not to kill frogs can be seen as coming under the same category as the prohibition of harming any animal except for some benefit or to remove a harm. Again, this `Illah was mentioned in reference to the prohibition of killing frogs: Ibn Naji at-Tanukhi al-Maliki, Sharh `alaa Matn ir-Risaalah, 2/492 "The basis for that [dislike of killing frogs] is what is in Sunan an-Nasa'ee, that a doctor mentioned a frog in a remedy in front of the Messenger of Allah SAWS, so the Prophet SAWS prohibited killing it. Abd al-Wahhab said the 'Asl is prohibition of "spoiling" creatures except for a benefit and to remove a harm; and there is no harm in frogs...." So, it is easy to see why Malikis allowed eating frogs and why they considered it "disliked" to kill frogs and recommended not to do so. It is also easy to see why they did not consider it absolutely "prohibited" to kill frogs as the other schools did. Not that I agree with the Maliki position. It's just that after researching their reasons and evidences, it is clear that their view is valid.

Do you have toads as a delicacy for breakfast?
