the most important thread - HOW TO PRAY

    http://www.islamicfinder.org/prayer/index.html

This gives good instruction on how to pray, mashaAllah.

Please could you all add links to sites that explain how to pray - it would be good to have a very basic one, e.g. for someone whose computer can't cope with stuff like flash or shockwave (some university computer networks have this kind of thing disabled)

Sorry, I have to post another one - this one is by far the best I've seen masha'Allah.:)

Just click the name of the fardh salaat you want to learn and off you go.:) If only I had found this 4 months ago, learning to pray would have been a lot easier.

Re: the most important thread - HOW TO PRAY

well inshaAllah you need a mat to pray on... any clean cloth will do, but if you want to buy something special inshaAllah, you could buy a proper prayer mat.

However, if you are tempted to wait to start praying until you have bought it.... don't be! Just pray. Any clean cloth will do. You're male, so just make sure that you are covered at least between the navel and your knees (with clean loose non seethrough clothing - trousers that are not tight are perfectly acceptable) and also your shoulders must be covered. If you've got one, wear a brimless hat. If you haven't, don't worry about it just pray inshaAllah. Normal western men's clothing is fine, provided its not tight - also don't have any pictures on the clothes!

For women - you must be covered apart from the hands and face (some scholarly opinions allow the feet to be uncovered too) - with loose, non seethrough clothing.

Regarding clothes, you may have seen other Muslims on the forum advocating wearing Muslim clothing, e.g. thobe - they are right that this is preferable but for a brand new revert, you have enough on your plate to start with - concentrate inshaAllah on the essential things first, like learning how to pray and working up to doing five prayers a day. Did you see this thread? http://www.ummah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=105143 its got practical advice on how to work up to doing all five prayers on time inshaAllah.

The other stuff like wudu (washing yourself before praying) and how to pray are in the earlier posts as I'm sure you've noticed  just take it step by step. Any problems at all, any questions, please post them here and inshaAllah we'll do our best to help.

The Prophet (saw) said, Verily, the knots of Islam will be undone one by one. Whenever one knot is lost, then the people grabbed onto the one which came after it. The first of these knots will be ruling and the last will be the salah.[1]

The author of Sitoon as-Sultaniyah says about this Hadith: “It was the Prophet who tied together the knots of Islam, including the uppermost knot of ruling after he established the Islamic state…As mentioned by Imam Mawardi the leadership has been proscribed as the succession of the Prophet in protecting the deen and governing the societal affairs. In this respect – Imam Baidawi mentioned that the Imama/Khalifah is the succession from the Prophet in the establishment of the laws of the Shari’ah. So without the Imam the laws lie unapplied and the territory is not protected effectively. The hadith indicates that it is the uppermost knot that keeps the subsequent knots safe from being untied. This is since it is the ruler that is responsible to apply Islam in its entirety, to implement the limits proscribed by Allah and to protect the society. Imam Ahmed mentioned without an Imam (for the Muslims as their leader) there would be fitna, and the destruction of the symbols of Islam ending with the Prayer is a great fitna.[2]
