Fasting 6 days of Shawwal is like fasting for a lifetime!

Fasting 6 days of Shawwal is like fasting for a lifetime!

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Whoever fasts Ramadaan and follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.” [Muslim]

SubhanAllah how can any of us miss such a valuable opportunity when we will be begging each other for a single good deed on the day of Judgement!

It is even more rewarding to observe the 6 fasts on Sunnah fasting days such as Monday & Thursdays & the White days (13th, 14th & 15th of each Islamic month).

The White days for Shawwal 2017 are: 13th Shawwal - Friday 7th July; 14th Shawwal - Saturday 8th July; 15th Shawwal - Sunday 9th July.

The 6 fasts can be spread out throughout the month of Shawwal inshaAllah.

NOTE: The Month of Shawwal ends on Monday 24th July 2017

I used to think that if we want to fast the 6 days of Shawwal then we have to fast during the white days and the days before and after it, if that made any sense. I have no idea why I thought that  Weird.

Asalaamu Alaikum, It is better to fast the 6 days either on a Monday, Thursdayand during the white days ir 13th, 14th and 15th during each Islamic month, It is better to make up for Qadha (fasts missed) fasts first and then fast these 6 fasts inshaAllah.

          I have a question.
I fasted the white days this Shawwal, and my niyyat was to do the White Days fasting (not Shawwal fasting). Did it count as Shawwal fasting as well? Or did it count only as my White Days fasting? And is it permissible to make a niyyat to fast both Monday and Shawwal fasting at the same time?

Asalaamu Alaikum. Deeds are by intention so if you intended in your heart to fast both white days and the Shwwal fasts then it will be accepted even if you did not necessarily make such an intention via your tongue. But if you only intended in your heart to fast the white days and not Shwwal fasts then your intention was only to fast the white days and not the Shwwal fasts.

There are still 2 weeks to go so all is not lost inshaAllah. Yes you can make intention to fast the Sunnahuch Mondays and Thursdays as well as Shwwal fasts.

REMINDER: 2 weeks left to keep the 6 fasts of Shawwal which ends on Monday 24th July.

Fasting 6 days of Shawwal like fasting for a lifetime: The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with 6 days of Shawaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.” [Muslim]

SubhanAllah How can any of us miss out on such huge rewards?

Re: Fasting 6 days of Shawwal is like fasting for a lifetime!

For those sisters who have not yet made up fasts due to menses in Ramadan and therefore have not yet fasted the 6 fasts of Shawwal then according to Hanafi fiqh:

                  Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

The fasts of Shawwal are mustahab. They mayt be kept at any time during the month of Shawwal. A woman who missed her fasts of Ramadan may make up (qaza) for them in Shawwal or anytime during the year besides the two Eids and the 11th, 12th and 13th of Zilhajj. She may keep the six fasts and then make up (qaza) for the fasts of Ramadan.

                  And Allah knows best

                  Source: http://islamqa.org/hanafi/askimam/1308

Please note: To delay qadha fast due to menses in order to fast the 6 fasts of shawwal first is the position of the Hanafi, Maliki and Shafi'i Madhab but not Hanbali.

Thanks for the info. My mom and I repaid our missed fasts first and then did the 6 days fasting in Shawwal. We thought since the ones we missed are mandatory to pay back we should do those first & then do the sunnah fast of 6 days in Shawwal. However, we started early & had time in the month to do all. I'm actually on my 4th day today with 2 more to go. I'm really enjoying it. It feels like an extension of Ramadan. I feel at peace & healthier. After this I'm looking forward to fasting Mondays & Thursdays as well as the white days 13th, 14th, and 15th. They seem pretty doable as I would be fasting less than half of the month. Fasting keeps me grounded & in touch with my deen. It's easy to get caught up in other things in dunya like my job & school work. I'm aiming to do it every week whenever possible. For those who haven't fasted the 6 days in Shawwal, I urge you to try it. There are 8 days left.

Asalaamu Alaikum, MashaAllah sister that is good. Many of us have intentions each year to continue fasting after Ramadan whether it is weekly or even monthly but then we allow shaythan and our nafs to deter us from this wonderfully rewarding and healthy practice. In fact I think if all of us fasted Mondays, Thursdays or even the white days then many of us would not have as many detrimental physical and spiritual conditions as we have today. Fasting increases our Taqwa, and enables us to reach ihsaan as well as enabling us to be more physically healthier. Even science attests to the benefits of fasting twice a week:

Medicine Has confirmed benefits of fasting Monday and Thursday

May Allah reward you and all those who continuously fast throughout the year and enable us to continue fasting throughout the year. Ameen
