  • I have decided!

I was talking with a friend a few days ago, and he asked me about my GCSE grades. I told him what they were, and he said, "Masha-Allah you got an A in German, what did you get in Arabic?" (serious question, knowing me, he thought that I must have done Arabic).

    I was like, "Ummm, I didn't do Arabic..." :o :o :o

The brother said "oh ok" (well he didn't do Arabic either) and moved on to another topic.

But that conversation got me thinking.

I made some effort to get an A in German, just to show an A on my result sheet.

And if I could do that for German, a language I don't particularly like that much (though I love learning languages), why didn't I do it for Arabic, a language that I love, the language of the Qur'an?

I dream of picking up the phone and talking to my Arab friends in Arabic. So why didn't I take steps towards that dream by taking a simple GCSE in Arabic? Why didn't I spend my "lazing about" time learning Arabic?

Am I gonna be able to say "hold on, mate..." to the Angel of Death?

So I have decided! No more beating about the George Dubya...! From now on, I shall spend at least 30 minutes a day learning Arabic.

And if any idiot at school wants to call me "Arab wannabe", I don't care. I'm already a "Bosnian wannabe", so it ain't no thang.

Make du'a for me, brothers and sisters. I'm jumping in.

          baba, now you thinking

my son is in university and he was going to study spanish

and he comes home all excited, and tells me

i say to him, doesnt his university offer arabic

he gets that look, like duh,

and i say, if you want to learn spanish, thats a waste of time

but to study the language of the quran, that would be a blessing

there are too many muslims who recite the quran and dont understand what they are reciting

Someone was just reading me some ayahs in Arabic. I felt very sad they couldn't tell me the translation, the ayah number or the number of the surah even.
Only that it is in Surah Anfal and the 9th part of the Quran. I had to go get my arabic/english combined quran to hunt the translation.

SubhanAllah this was a hafis and someone who reads beautifully. Such a waste of the ilm of the Quran.

Inshaa Allah I want to and want my children to benefit from the blessings of Quran, AND understanding.

Afterall it was sent as a guide.

So very good Baba. A wonderful assignment. May Alah grant you success and the full benefit, (and me also inshaa Allah, along with all the Muslims.) Aamin.

              MashaAllah Babs :D

Hey I'm also trying to 'Learn Arabic', but still have a long way to go..

Perhaps we can help each other out eh? :)

I'm able to interpret some Qur'aan quite throughly with the proper meaning but that is after spending a LONG time studying Arabic grammar...

              'It's all about the grammar'.
              What does 'freedom' mean?

Does the eagle want to swim in the sea,
              Restricted by the sky?

Does the fish want to dance on the wind,
              Not enough river to explore?

Yet the sky is freedom for the bird
              but death for the fish,

The sea is wide for the fish
              but will engulf the bird.

We ask for freedom but freedom to do what?
We can only express our nature as it was created.

The prayer mat of the earth is freedom,
freedom from slavery to other than the One,
Who offers an shoreless ocean of love to swim in
and a horizon that extends to the next life,
Yet we chose the prison and call it freedom.

Grammar is BORING! Just learn loads of vocabulary and you'll pick up the grammar along the way.

Of course, you're going to give your Arab friends a good laugh this way - they'll laugh for about 10 minutes before being able to compose themselves and correct you.

I still remember when my brother was asking for an Algerian flat-bread-type thing called mhajab, he accidentally asked for 'the mother of mhajab' and the sisters in the bakery screamed and laughed at him, telling him to, "Say it again! Say it again!" :D

But it's more interesting that way. :D

Eventually they'll get used to it though (or their stomachs will start hurting from all the laughing), and they will correct you straight away without laughing for more than a few seconds :D
