Falsehood that leads to Falsehood [Al-Kalam, dialectical, speculative theology] Abd Al-Raḥm�n b. Mahdī reports:

I entered upon M�lik b. Anas when a man was asking him about the Qur`�n. [Im�m M�lik] said, “Perhaps you are a companion of Amr b. ‘Ubayd. May All�h curse ‘Amr, for he was the one who innovated this bid’ah of Kal�m . If Kal�m was knowledge, the Companions and their Followers would have spoken it, like they spoke about the regulations and laws [of Islam]. But [Kal�m] is falsehood that leads to falsehood.�

The Provision of a Traveler [this world to the next] Anas reports that when Salm�n [Al-F�rsī] – All�h be pleased with him – was ill, Sa’d visited him and found him crying, so he asked him:

O my brother, what makes you cry? Did you not accompany the Messenger of All�h ﷺ ? Did you not do such-and-such [good deeds]? He replied, “I am not crying over any one of two things: I am not crying out of love and yearning for this world nor out of dislike for the hereafter, but I am crying because All�h’s Messenger ﷺ took a covenant from me about something I think I have only transgressed. He made me promise that it is enough for anyone only to have enough [of this world] as would suffice as the provisions of a traveler, but I think I have only gone too far. As for you o Sa’d, fear All�h when you judge, and when you distribute anything and when you think about doing anything.�

Th�bit (one of the reporters) said, “And it reached me that [when he died] he left only about twenty dirham of spending he had.�

The Last Drops of this World
Kh�lid b. ‘Umayr Al-‘Adawī reports, ‘Utbah b. Ghazw�n – All�h be pleased with him – once gave us a sermon. He praised All�h, then said:

The life of this world has announced its departure and is quickly turning away, and nothing remains of it save the likes of the last drop of water in a vessel as its possessor tries to catch it. You are moving on to an abode that has no end, so move on with the best [deeds] that you have. For it has been said to us that a rock can be dropped from the edge of Hell and fall for seventy years without reaching the bottom. Yet, by All�h, it will be filled. Do you not then wonder? And it has been said to us that a single entrance to Paradise is as wide as a journey of forty years, yet there will come a day when it will be crowded.

I have seen myself as the seventh of seven [followers of] All�h’s Messenger – All�h’s peace and blessings be upon him; we had no food save the leaves of trees which put sores round our mouths. I once got a cloak which I tore in half to share with Sa’d b. M�lik: I used half as my waist-wrap and he used the other. And yet today, there is not one of us except he has become a governor over some city – and I seek refuge with All�h that I consider myself great and important when I am small in front of All�h. Verily there was never prophet-hood except that it gradually changed until it ended up being a kingship, and verily you will see what the governors after us are like.

It is reported that ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭ�lib – All�h be pleased with him – said:
Goodness is not in your wealth and offspring being plentiful; true goodness is when your [good] deeds are plenty and you have great understanding and forbearance, and when you compete to worship your Lord. If you do good you praise All�h and thank Him, and if you sin you beg All�h’s forgiveness. There is no good in this life except with two types of men: A man who sins but then corrects himself through repentance, and a man who strives and hastens to get [the good] of the hereafter.

Don’t be the Fifth It is reported that Abū Al-Dard�` – All�h be pleased with him – said:

Be a scholar or a learner, or a person who loves [the scholars] or a follower [of the scholars], but do not be the fifth.
Ḥumayd (one of the reporters) asked Al-Ḥasan (Al-Baṣri, who reported this from Abū Al-Dard�`), “And who is the fifth?� He replied, “A heretic (mubtadi’, religious innovator}.�

It is reported that Ibr�hīm b. Adham (d162H) – All�h have mercy on him – once passed through the market of Baṣrah. People gathered around him and asked:

O AbÅ« IsḥÄ�q, AllÄ�h the Exalted says in his Book. ‘Call on me, I will answer your prayers’, but we have been calling on Him for a long time and He does not answer our prayers. [IbrÄ�hÄ«m] replied, “O people of Baá¹£rah, your hearts have died in respect to ten things: First, you know AllÄ�h but you do not give Him His rights; second, you have read AllÄ�h’s Book but you do not act by it; third, you claim to love AllÄ�h’s Messenger – AllÄ�h’s peace and blessings be upon him – yet you abandon his Sunnah; fourth, you claim to be enemies to Shayá¹Ä�n but you conform to [his ways]; fifth, you say you love Paradise yet you do not work for it; sixth, you say you fear The Fire yet you put yourselves closer to it [by sinning]; seventh, you say death is true but you do not prepare for it; eighth, you busy yourselves with the faults of others and disregard your own; ninth, you consume the favors of your Lord but are not grateful for them; and tenth, you bury your dead but take no lesson from them.â€�

It is reported that Al-Fu�ayl b. ʿAyy�� – All�h have mercy on him – said:
Verily, All�h has angels who seek out the circles of remembrance [of All�h], so be careful who you sit with; make sure it is not with an adherent of bid’ah, for All�h does not look at them. And the sign of nif�q (hypocrisy in faith) is that a man mingles with an adherent of bid’ah.

The Integrity of a Man and his Prayer It is reported that Abū Al-‘Āliyah – All�h have mercy on him – said:

I would travel for days to a man to hear [knowledge/ḥadīth ] from him, and the first thing I would check about him is his prayer: if he performed it properly I would stay and hear [knowledge] from him, but if he neglected it, I would return without hearing from him, and I would say, ‘He will be even more neglectful of other matters.’

No poverty after Paradise and no wealth in the Fire It is reported that Jundub b. ‘Abdill�h Al-Bajalī – Allah be pleased with him – was once asked for advice and instruction. He said:

I advise you to fear All�h and obey Him (taqw�) and I advise you to adhere to the Quran, for it is a light in the dark night and a guidance during the day, so implement it no matter how much struggle and poverty you have to face. If a calamity befalls you, put your wealth forward to protect your religion, and if the calamity continues, put forward your wealth and your life to save your religion [but never risk your religion], for the ruined is he whose religion is ruined, and the looted is he whose religion is taken. And know that there is no poverty after Paradise, and no riches after the Fire.

Citizenship by investment is the latest buzz in the world of international business currently. Most countries try to gain high profile investment in their country. It is reported that Al-Ḥasan b. Al-Ḥasan b. ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭ�lib – All�h have mercy on him – said to a person from the R�fi�ah:
Love us, but if we disobey All�h, then hate us; for if All�h was going to benefit anyone because of his relation to the Messenger of All�h – peace and blessings be upon him, without obedience [to All�h], He would have benefitted the mother and father [of the Prophet].

How the Salaf were (and weren’t) when hearing the Quran and Dhikr It was said to ‘Ā`ishah – All�h be pleased with her, “There are people who faint when they hear the Quran.� She said. “The Quran is nobler than to have people lose their minds from it. Rather, it [should be] as All�h the Mighty and Sublime said:

Those who fear their Lord tremble with fear by it, then their skins and hearts settle to the remembrance of Allah. (SÅ«rah Al-Zumar: 23)

It is reported that Ê¿AbdullÄ�h b. ‘Urwah b. Al-Zubayr said, “I asked my grandmother AsmÄ�` (bint AbÄ« Bakr) – AllÄ�h be pleased with her, ‘How were the Companions of AllÄ�h’s Messenger – AllÄ�h peace and praise be upon him – when they heard the Quran?’ She replied, ‘their eyes would shed tears and they would tremble (with fear), as AllÄ�h described them (in the Quran).’ I said, ‘There are some people here who, when they hear the Quran, fall down unconscious,’ She said, ‘I seek refuge with AllÄ�h from the accursed Shayá¹Ä�n.’â€�

It is also reported that Asm�` was asked, “Did any of the Salaf used to faint out of the fear of All�h?� She replied, “No, but they used to cry.�

It is reported that Ibn ʿUmar – All�h be pleased with him – once passed by a man from Iraq who had dropped unconscious. He asked, “What is wrong with him?� [People] replied, “When the Quran is recited to him or he hears the remembrance of All�h he falls unconscious out of his fear of All�h.� Ibn ʿUmar said, “We fear All�h and we do not drop unconscious!�

It is reported that Anas b. M�lik was asked about people who drop unconscious when the Quran is recited to them. He said, “That is the behavior of the Khaw�rij.�

It is reported that Muḥammad b. Sīrīn said, having been asked about a man who drops unconscious when the Quran is recited to him, “Make an appointment between us and him, we will sit on a wall, and the Quran – from beginning to end – will be recited unto him. If he falls off the wall, he is as he claims.�
