Manners In Islam - Sneezing and Yawning

    Sneezing and Yawning

Abu Hurayrah RA said: "The Prophet :saw: said, 'Allah loves the sneeze and dislikes the yawn. When someone sneezes and then praises Allah, it is a duty for every muslim who hears him to say, "May Allah have mercy on you." As for the yawn, it is from Satan, so one should repress it as much as possible. When a man says, "Haw!" Satan laughs at him."

What Does One Say On Sneezing and The One Who Hears Him

Sayyidina Ibn Abbas RA has said, "when one of you sneezes, let him say 'Alhumdulillah'(praise belongs to Allah). The angel responds with 'Rabil ala meen' (yar hamakAllah-may Allah have mercy on you)."

Bukhari, Abu Dawood, Tirmizi, Ahmad, Hakim

Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah RA has reported the Prophet :saw: as saying, "When one of you sneezes, he must say 'Alhumdulillah'.And when he says 'Alhumdulillah', his brother or colleague should say 'Yar hamak Allah', (may Allah have mercy on you). The sneezer must then say (in response) 'yahadik Allah wa yuslih balak (may Allah guide you and improve your affairs.)

Who Hears a Sneeze and Says Al-Humdulillah

Sayyidina Ali RA said that anyone who hears a sneeze and says "alhumdulillah rabil ala meen"(praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds in all circumstances) then he will never have pain in his grinder and ears.

        Ibn Abu Shaybah, Tabrani

        Explanation

This has been stated as a remedy and cure and it is not the response to the sneeze. Rather, it is a practice to protect one's own grinder and ears.

No Answer Need Be Given If Alhumdulillah Is Not Said

Sayyidina Anas RA said that two men sneezed in the presence of the Messenger of Allah :saw:. He responded to one of them but did not say anything to the other. He said, "You responded to him but did not respond to me." The Prophet :saw: reminded him, "He had said Alhumdulillah but you did not say Alhumdulillah"

            How The Sneezer Should Reply

When Sayyidina Abdullah Ibn Umar RA received the response "yar hamak Allah) to his sneeze, he would say "Yar hamuna wa iyyakum wa yaghfirulana wa lakum" (May Allah have mercy on us and on you and may He forgive us and forgive you).

              When A Jew Sneezes

Sayyidina Abu Musa RA said that the Jew came before the Prophet :saw: and sneezes in the hope that he would say to them "Yar hamakum Allah" (May Allah have mercy on you). But, the Prophet :saw: said to them, instead, "Yahdeekum Allah wa yuslih balakum" (May Allah guide you and correct your affairs or situation (by enabling you to believe)."

Place Hands Over the Mouth When Yawning

It is narrated by Sayyidina Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri RA that the Prophet :saw:

said, "When one of you yawns, he should hold his hand over his mouth because the devil enters the mouth."
