The truth about the Mahdi, and the order in which the portents of the Hour will appear - IslamQA:

        Praise be to Allaah.

Imam al-Mahdi will be a righteous man from among the descendants of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), who will appear at the end of time, through whom Allaah will set mankind’s affairs straight, and will fill the earth with fairness and justice just as it was filled with wrongdoing and oppression. His name will be the same as the name of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and his father’s name will be the same as that of the father of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). So his name will be Muhammad ibn ‘Abd-Allaah al-Mahdi, or Ahmad ibn ‘Abd-Allaah al-Mahdi. He will be descended from Faatimah the daughter of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), through al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him). The sign of his appearance will be widespread corruption and the earth being filled with wrongdoing and aggression.

There are a number of ahaadeeth which point to his appearance and attributes being as described above. When taken together these reports reach the level of tawaatur (i.e., narrated from so many people by so many people that it is inconceivable that they could all have agreed upon a lie). This is explained in more detail in question no. 1252.

With regard to the order in which the portents of the Hour will appear, there is some difference of opinion among the scholars, the reason being that no such order or events is narrated in the Sunnah. However the scholars have determined the order of some of the events, as follows:

1 – The appearance of the minor portents of the Hour, of which there are many which will not appear in any specific order. These include: the sending of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his death; the plague of ‘Amwaas; the appearance of tribulations; the loss of honesty; the disappearance of knowledge; the spread of riba, musical instruments and alcohol; regarding these things as permissible; competition in erecting tall buildings; a great deal of killing; time passing more quickly; adornment of the mosques; prevalence of shirk; the spread of immorality; a great deal of stinginess; many earthquakes; landslides, transformations and pelting with stones from the heavens; disappearance of righteous people; believers’ dreams coming true; neglect of the Sunnah; a great deal of lying; a great deal of false testimony; a great deal of sudden death; a great deal of rain but little growth of vegetation; wishing for death; increase in numbers of the “Romans” and fighting them; and other signs which are narrated in saheeh ahaadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

2 – The appearance of the Mahdi, who will appear before the Dajjaal and before the descent of ‘Eesa ibn Maryam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). This is indicated by the hadeeth of Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “ ‘Eesa ibn Maryam will come down and their leader the Mahdi will say to him: ‘Come and lead us in prayer.’ But he will say: ‘No, one of them should lead the others in prayer, as a sign of honour from Allaah to this ummah.’: Narrated by al-Haarith ibn Abi Usaamah in his Musnad. And Ibn al-Qayyim said in al-Manaar al-Muneef (1/147): its isnaad is jayyid. The hadeeth is narrated with a mawsool isnaad in Saheeh Muslim, without naming their leader. Muslim’s report says: “… ‘And ‘Eesa ibn Maryam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) will come down and their leader will say to him: ‘Come and lead us in prayer.’ But he will say: ‘No, one of them should lead the others in prayer, as a sign of honour from Allaah to this ummah.’” Narrated by Muslim, 225. So ‘Eesa (peace be upon him) will follow the Mahdi in prayer, which indicates that the Mahdi will appear before ‘Eesa, and ‘Eesa will kill the Dajjaal, which indicates that the Dajjaal will appear during the time of the Mahdi. See also question no. 10301.

3 – The appearance of the Dajjaal – for more detail about his emergence see Questions no. 8806, 171, 8301.

4 – The descent of ‘Eesa ibn Maryam and his killing the Dajjaal (see question no. 10302).

5 – The appearance of Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj (Gog and Magog). One indication that Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj will emerge at the time of ‘Eesa (peace be upon him) is the hadeeth of al-Nawaas ibn Sam’aan, which says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told them about the Dajjaal, and said: “Whilst he is like that, Allaah will reveal to ‘Eesa: ‘I have released slaves of Mine whom no one will be able to fight. Take My slaves to safety in al-Toor (Sinai),’ and Allaah will send Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj, who will come swarming down from every mound. The first of them will pass by Lake Tiberias and will drink the water in it, and the last of them will pass by it and will say, ‘There was water here once.’” Narrated by Muslim, no. 2937.

See also questions no. 171 and 3437.

Then the signs will come quickly, one after another. According to a hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The signs will come one after another, like beads falling from a string”. Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Mu’jam al-Awsat; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’. Then the sun will rise from the west, the Beast will emerge, and there will be landslides and other major signs. We ask Allaah to make us steadfast unto death. And Allaah knows best.

The Emergence of The Mahdi - IslamQA:

          Praise be to Allaah.

The Muslim must understand that evidence from both the Qur’aan and Sunnah are of the same level and must be followed equally. Both the Qur’aan and Sunnah are Revelation (Wahy) from Allaah and must be followed. Allaah says concerning His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) (interpretation of the meaning):

“Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.

It is only a Revelation revealed”

          [al-Najm 53:4-3]

It was narrated from al-Miqdaam ibn Ma’dikarib that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Beware! I have been given the Qur’aan and something like it, yet the time is coming when a man replete on his couch will say: ‘Keep to the Qur’aan; what you find in it to be permissible treat as permissible, and what you find in it to be prohibited treat as prohibited.’”

(Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4606; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani – may Allah have mercy on him – in Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, 3848).

          Secondly:

Allaah has enjoined that His Messenger is to be obeyed independently of the Qur’aan. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority”

          [al-Nisa’ 4:59]

“And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it)”

          [al-Hashr 59:7]

          Thirdly:

It is not narrated in either the Qur’aan or the Sunnah precisely when the Mahdi will emerge, but he will emerge at the end of time. However we must point out the following:

1-The emergence of the Mahdi will be one of the last minor signs of the Hour.

2- Many people claimed that the Mahdi has emerged or will emerge to support their personal aims and misguided beliefs, such as the Qadianis (Ahmadis), Baha’is, Shi’ah and other deviant groups. This has led some later scholars to reject the ahaadeeth which speak of the Mahdi or to misinterpret them by saying that what is meant by the Mahdi is the descent of ‘Eesa ibn Maryam (Jesus son of Mary – peace be upon him) at the end of time. Some of them quote a hadeeth that is attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which says, “There is no Mahdi apart from ‘Eesa ibn Maryam.”

This hadeeth is da’eef (weak) and cannot be soundly attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). See al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah, 1/175, by al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him).

3-Many scholars have written books confirming that the Mahdi will emerge, and describing that as part of the belief (‘aqeedah) of the Muslim. For example: al-Haafiz Abu Na’eem, Abu Dawood, Abu Katheer, al-Sakhaawi, al-Shawkaani, and others.

4-It is proven in the Sunnah that the Mahdi will meet ‘Eesa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) and that ‘Eesa will pray behind him.

Muslim (156) narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, ‘A group of my ummah will continue to fight for the truth and prevail until the Day of Resurrection. Then ‘Eesa ibn Maryam will come down and their leader will say, “Come and lead us in prayer.” But he will say, “No, you are leaders of one another” – as an honour to this ummah.’”

The leader mentioned in this hadeeth is the Mahdi. According to a report narrated by Abu Na’eem and al-Haarith ibn Usaamah, “Their leader the Mahdi will say…” Ibn al-Qayyim said, “Its isnaad is jayyid (good).”

5-The Muslim should not wait for the emergence of the Mahdi, rather he has to strive hard and devote his efforts to support Islam, and to do whatever he can for the religion. He should not hope and wait for the emergence of the Mahdi or anyone else, rather he should correct himself, his family and the people around him, so that when he meets Allaah he meet Him having done his best.

            Al-Mahdi Truth or Fiction?

Author: Dr. Muhammed Ibn Ahmed Ibn Ismail Al-Muqaddam

"A detailed treatise on one of the signs of the hour, the arrival of al-Mahdi, a rightly guided leader for the Muslims. A matter of controversy and part of the creed of Muslims, al-Mahdi is a topic surrounded by misconceptions and misunderstanding. Dr Muhammad Ahmed Bin Ismail Al-Muqaddam details the many narrations transmitted from the prophet Muhammad (saw) and his companions about al-Mahdi and critically analyses them, filtering the authentic from the inauthentic and explaining the view of Ahl Al Sunnah Wal Jama'ah on this important topic."

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The Mahdi will appear in the latter part of my nation. Allah will grant him rain to bring produce from the earth. He will give out wealth appropriately, cattle will be plentiful, and the nation will become great. He will live as ruler for seven or eight years.

Al-Mahdi and the End of Times as Explained by Uthman dan Fodio:

Within the Islamic faith is the realm of eschatology, the theology that there will be manifest signs prior to the end of time. Eschatology is important because it gives clarity regarding the signs leading to the end of this temporal world and provides hope to the faithful to remain steadfast in the face of developing turmoil. Those who do not recognize these signs are more likely to fall into despair when they appear, unlike those who have knowledge which strengthens their faith. Part of the Islamic eschatology among Sunnis and Shi’is is the concept of al-Mahdiyyah, the belief that a rightly-guided saint will appear at the end of time to lead people aright. Just as Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the Seal of the Prophets, Imam al-Mahdi will appear as the Seal of Saints (Khatim al-Awliya) on earth.1

Though al-Mahdiyyah in general is a belief with widely narrated (mutawaatir) basis, there has been disagreement among Muslims on this issue, from the signs associated with the appearance of Imam al-Mahdi to the time of his actual manifestation. As there have always been false messiahs within religions, as well as overzealous followers who falsely ascribed saviorhood to pious persons who did not claim it for themselves, this phenomenon has also taken place among Muslims. The great Western African scholar Shaykh Uthman dan Fodio aka Uthman bin Fudi (may Allah’s mercy be upon him) dealt with this issue among his disciples, some who falsely proclaimed him to be al-Mahdi.

Uthman dan Fodio wrote a clarification to the issue of him not being al-Mahdi entitled Tahdhir al-Ikhwan ‘an Id’aa al-Mahdiyyah, as well as a treatise called Tanbih al-Ummah ‘ala Qurb Hujum Ashrat as-Sa’ah about the signs of the time ushering in Imam al-Mahdi.

The following are some of points taken from the explanations of dan Fodio on the two interconnecting topics:

                  1. al-Mahdi will come from the male descendants of Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, and this was certainly elucidated on in numerous authentic narrations.2

Uthman dan Fodio had maternal lineage to the Prophet (prayers and peace be upon him & his family) rather than paternal lineage. His mother, Sayyidah Hawa bint Sayyidah Fatimah bint Muhammad ash-Sharif (may Allah’s mercy be upon them) was a descendant of Abu al-Hasan ash-Shadhili (may Allah sanctify his spirit), who was a from the lineage of Imam al-Hasan bin Ali (peace be upon them).

                  2. "I was certainly born in Bilad as-Sudan (sub-Saharan Africa) in a location called Maratt while it is known from prophetic narrations that al-Mahdi will be born in al-Madinah…Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'Al-Mahdi will be born in al-Madinah.'"3

                  3. It is narrated by Abu Dawud on the authority of ibn Mas’ud and also by at-Tirmidhi in a sound tradition that “Al-Mahdi’s name will correspond with my name and his father’s name will be with my father.”4

                  4. There will be two eclipses during the Month of Ramadan, one being a solar eclipse in the middle of Ramadan.5

                  5. The appearance of Ya’juj (Gog) and Ma’juj (Magog).6

6, The rising of the sun in the West.7

7, A fire will gather people from the East to the West.8

                  8. Al-Mahdi will arrive at the time of the coming out of ad-Dajjal and the descent of ‘Isa (peace be upon him), just as it was said by al-Hasan al-Yusi (may Allah be pleased with him) in his lectures.9

                  9. Ad-Dajjal will come from Khurasan, and then proceed to the Hijaz between Iraq and Greater Syria, but Allah knows best.10

                  10. Certainly, the narration from al-Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) said, “There will be no land that ad-Dajjal will not enter except for Makkah and al-Madinah.”11

                  11. What is clear from what will save people from his [ad-Dajjal] trial is what has been narrated by Muslim on the authority of Abu Darda that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever safeguards ten ayat from the first part of Surah al-Kahf shall be protected from ad-Dajjal.”12

                  12. He will go out with ‘Isa bin Maryam to fight ad-Dajjal in Palestine near Bayt al-Maqdis, and ‘Isa will pray behind him.13

As there are more signs about the end of time than those listed, it is clear that Uthman dan Fodio did not declare himself to be al-Mahdi. Although all of these signs have not manifested themselves, the coming of the last days is, however, drawing near. This inevitability, just like death, however, should not be a source of grief for Muslims. As we should know the signs of the coming of Imam al-Mahdi include that “he will fill the earth with justice just as it has been filled with tyranny,” it is also important for us to strive to be those of faith and justice so that if we live to see his appearance, he will recognize us to be among his followers.14 This was the understanding of our great scholars of the past such as Shaykh Uthman dan Fodio.

                    Al-Mahdi - Lecture:

"The concept of the Mahdi is one of the most controversial and greatly misunderstood topics. Different sects have proposed radically variant beliefs about him. In this lecture Sheikh Abu Adnan sheds light on the Prophetic descriptions of the Mahdi. He explains the signs of the Mahdi, the trials and tribulations that shall accompany him, sorting out fact from fiction. What he looks like? What is his role? what are his achievements? what do the Shi’a believe about him?"

This looks like a great book:

                      Author: Muhammad al-Areefi

"In recent times things have become very confusing and we have begun to see in book stores and on websites speculations about future events, based on ayah and hadeeths which refer to these future events concerning the signs of the Hour. Sometimes you hear about the appearance of the Mahdi, sometimes you hear that the final battle between the Good and the Evil is close at hand, other time you hear some thing happening in the East or in the West. So, learn about the Final hour and it signs by reading this book which is backed by proofs from Quran and Hadith."
