  • How to stop sinning

    Assalamu alaykum

I was listening to a lecture the other day & the speaker said something really interesting. He said, if you have a certain weakness or you are accustomed to committing a specific sin, whenever you commit the sin, pray 2 rakaat of Nafl salaah. So if, for example, you smoke & you want to leave it but you canít, every time you smoke pray two rakaat. The Shaytaan will hate this so much so, that he will want to prevent you from doing extra acts of worship that he will make you stop sinning!¬*
If you find it difficult to wake up for fajr, if you wake up and have missed it then pray extra salaah (Salatul duha) and Iím sure that you will hardly ever miss a fajr salaah again!¬*

    This is very effective.

But when you start doing this, your next challenge becomes shaytan trying to get you to delay or skip doing those 2 rakat.

Yeah that also works. Might be easier than praying 2 rakat in some cases.

"And perform the Salah. Indeed, the Salah prevents from Al-Fahsha' (obscene extremely evil sins) and Al-Munkar (sins, bad deeds) and the remembrance of Allah is greater indeed." (29:45)

Prayer includes two things: the first of which is giving up immoral behavior and evil deeds, i.e., praying regularly enables a person to give up these things. Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said: "A man came to the Prophet and said, "So-and-so prays at night, but when morning comes, he steals." The Prophet peace be upon him said:

"What you are saying (the Salah) will stop him from doing that."

Prayer has three attributes, and any prayer that contains none of these attributes is not truly prayer:

          1. Being done purely and sincerely for Allah alone (Ikhlas),
          2. fear of Allah, and
          3. remembrance of Allah.

          1. Ikhlas makes a person do good deeds,
          2. fear prevents him from doing evil deeds, and
          3. the remembrance of Allah is the Qur'an which contains commands and prohibitions.

Ibn `Awn Al-Ansari said: "When you are praying, you are doing good, it is keeping you away from immoral sins and evil wicked deeds and what you are doing is part of the remembrance of Allah which is greater.''

          (From Ibn Kathir)

Other good deeds will work too, in sha Allah:

Be mindful of Allah wherever you may be,
follow-up a bad deed with a good deed
            and it will efface it,
            and behave with good
            character toward people.
