  • Why are many Muslims in prison?

Muslims make up 1 in 20 Britons and yet 1 in 7 prisoners. Clearly a disproportionate number of Muslims are imprisoned.
What makes it even worse is these criminals want Islamic rights in the prison. I.e. Fresh clothes, prayer preferences etc.

Why are too many Muslims in prison and should they be given their rights as Muslims?

Probably because they broke laws. Humans are human, it doesn't matter if they identify as Christian, Jew, Muslim....they could identify as a tree, it doesn't matter...humans are not perfect.

Just because someone is a Muslim, does not make them immune to being a bad person or breaking a law.

Question is should they have the right to pray... did I read that correctly?

Re: Why are many Muslims in prison?

Some prisoners convert to Islam not all were Muslim when they were initially thrown into the jail cell.

A lot of those prisoners are teenagers and young inmates like 15-25 who were influenced by gang culture and bad influences/poor upbringing and living in poverty/high unemployment rates/etc there are many factors involved why a lot of Muslims are in prison in England, it is not because of Islam because Islam forbids those crimes.

And why are you so fussed about Muslims praying in prison I'm sure they allow Christians to pray in their cells too....
Yes they should be given their right to practice their Islamic faith (it doesn't hurt others so why it bothers you??????) but if they were fully practicing they wouldn't have ended up in the prison.

Other western countries with Muslims don't have such a high Muslim inmate rate like for example Canada or the USA

So don't blame Islam or them being Muslim for them landing behind bars

It is feared that the number will rise because of the increasing numbers of Muslim teenagers in youth jails; a large number of teenagers and young men of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin are known to end up in prison from the age of 15 to 25 in recent times.

It is also an unpalatable reality that young British Muslim prison leavers are more likely to reoffend. They find themselves ostracised and shunned by the community and therefore “more likely to turn to their old friends and networks that led to the cycle of crime in the first place.” MOSAIC and Muslim Youth Helpline have been working to raise awareness of the challenges faced by young Muslims ex-offenders who need additional support from their probation officer, prison staff member or someone from their own community so that they can stay away from reoffending.

There are some inevitable social factors that one needs to keep in mind - such as lower educational performance, higher unemployment, poor housing conditions for decades that have given rise to social exclusion of many Muslims. As Muslims mostly live in inner city conurbation affected by multiple social problems such as drugs and gang issues, they appear to exacerbate the problem. Poor parenting in sections of the community and less-than-satisfactory involvement of young people in mosques and community organisations are some factors that create a disconnection between generations. For impressionable youth this creates a vacuum in their aspiration and hole in their motivation to sail through the complex post-modern and highly secular life.

Why are too many Muslims in prison and should they be given their rights as Muslims?
First of all, yes of-course they should be given their islamic rights in prison and we should fight for that. How do we ever expect them to be reformed along islamic lines otherwise if they cannot pray or study the deen or even rely on their food being halal?

          Now as for reasons...

          1. Muslims predominately come from poorer backgrounds in the UK due to being new immigrants, discrimination, as well as certain cultural factors embedding low academic achievement, especially among males in some parts of the Muslim community. People who are poor are more likely to commit crimes punishable by prison.

          2. Discrimination. Being the most hated and most discriminated group in British society is inevitably going to cause problems if a Muslims is before a police officer or courts. Justice in the UK is not blind, it is full of prejudice at every level.

          3. Reversions... yes there are large numbers of people accepting Islam each week in British prisons, prison imams I know speak of sometimes 4 or 5 shahadahs in a week and not always being able to keep up with teaching them all they need to know.

I remember watching one of his video criticizing Muslims who were into rap. Even a non-Muslim himself knows more than these ghetto Muslims.

A rather judgmental comment. Even people in the "ghettos" can be decent people.

Some are criminals, some are wrongly imprisoned. Some are imprisoned for "crimes" which per Islam are not even crimes.

Is that where that came from?
Stupid justification for sinning, being judged by Allah should be feared
Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it.

Pretty certain idiots have been saying similar words for a lot longer, but certainly seems to have made this term popular in today's society.
