    I think the safest bet is to have one eye fixated on them as if they were men and one eye lowering the gaze as if they were women.

    But that's not how all transgender people look like. Some seriously do look like women or men to where you can't even tell if they are transgender

    It is not out of the ordinary to mistake a man for a woman if he imitates women to such a degree. Otherwise we would always be able to spot the transsexuals out of a list of women and transsexuals.
    But this doesn't mean you are homosexual, it just means you were attracted to the image of a woman. Just like seeing a picture of a woman doesn't make you picturesexual if you like it.
    This is actually a principle which invalidates the claim that homosexuals are "just born that way" and that they can't help it. Because they claim they can't be attracted to a person of the opposite gender, but if they can be "tricked", then they can be attracted to a person of the opposite gender who has features that they prefer, not to mention that preferences do change. You can notice this in lesbian couples who emulate men, are attracted to eachother, but then say they aren't attracted to men who look the way that they're trying to look for eachother.
    Bisexuals can't give an excuse for bad behaviour, and asexuals won't behave badly in that regard.

    Also, sort of a funny story, if you ever get into an argument with a homosexual about sexuality being something you're born with;
    [...]Sexual attraction to humans can develop in non-human mammals or birds as a result of sexual imprinting when reared from young by humans. One example is London Zoo female giant panda Chi Chi. When taken to Moscow Zoo for mating with the male giant panda An An, she refused his attempts to mate with her, but made a full sexual self-presentation to a Russian zookeeper.[8][9][...]
    They would have much to account for if they claim that the panda was born attracted to humans, or if they'd claim that sexuality can't be directed and/or changed.

    Anyhow, regarding diversion of one's glance, it reminds me of this hadith:

    :start:
    Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:

    A mukhannath (eunuch) used to enter upon the wives of Prophet (ﷺ). They (the people) counted him among those who were free of physical needs. One day the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon us when he was with one of his wives, and was describing the qualities of a woman, saying: When she comes forward, she comes forward with four (folds in her stomach), and when she goes backward, she goes backward with eight (folds in her stomach). The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Do I not see that this (man) knows what here lies. Then they (the wives) observed veil from him.
    Rasulallah(salallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not react to him until he learned that the man had desire for women.
    The general rule of thumb therefore seems to be; if it is of the opposite gender or attracts you, don't look.

    As for mainstream Islam, we have and never will have any practices like that, such as staring at men/people and then declaring it ibadah.
    You make it like it's a standard sufi practice. Lay down the bias for once. Be fair dude.

    The commandment to lower our gaze is general so it covers all situations. However there may be exceptions, e.g. if the woman is elderly or in a brief serious convo (still best to lower gaze but occasional eye contact is fine)

    There is no need to lower the gaze in front of the same gender because it will invoke any desire.
