RACIAL DISCRIMINATION
Have you been subjected to prejudice, discrimination or
taunting/bullying in the work place on the grounds of
race/colour/religion? If so you can help me!
I am compiling some research materials for a new course on
Cultural Diversity & Awareness-aimed at the white/non ethnic
population. This course will provide training/coaching on
acceptable behaviours/prepare managers to manage diverse
people form ethnic background, prevent overt and covert
discrimination on the grounds of race-and generally create
greater awareness/knowledge and hence tolerance & understanding.
I would like to know of specific examples of discrimination,
how it arose, how it was communicated (words used/body
language/other behaviour), consequences of any action taken;
how the organisation dealt with complaints; But more
importantly, I am keen to learn how discrimination is
communicated or expressed in the workplace. I can send you
a brief form to insert that information if you contact me
at the email address below. Your help will be most valuable.
Rest assured I am not a lawyer, member of the Police force
or any other official agency. I run my own training/marketing/
project management consultancy called 'Acumen'. Please respond
to the e-mail address below: [email protected]
Many thanks,
Rauf Mirza

CAMPAIGN FOR MUSLIM BROTHERS DETAINED IN GUANTANAMO BAY
Following successful public meetings in Birmingham this summer, the
families of the 3 Tipton detainees of Guantanamo Bay have been trying
to get Sandwell Council to allow a similar public meeting in the
Muslim Community Centre in Tipton. All three of the Tipton families
live within a couple of streets of the Centre. The purpose of this
meeting is to bring together the families and legal teams of the
detainees, to raise public awareness of the persecution that they and
the hundreds of other detainees are suffering. To date there has been
no evidence bought forward against any of the detainees, who are
locked up like animals. Many of whom have been denied the basic
right to medical attention.
After several weeks of trying to get Sandwell Council to agree, we
appear to be stuck in a bureaucratic quagmire (you might be forgiven
for thinking that booking a room in a community centre should be a
simple affair!). Council officers are saying there are "safety issues"
which prevent them allowing the meeting, but they are unable or
unwilling to say what these might be.
They also cite "the public nature" of the meeting as being a problem,
when public meetings take place at Sandwell Community Centres all the
time. This inertia has encouraged the belief, already in circulation,
that the decision to withhold permission is deliberate and is based
on a preference within the Council to keep the whole issue of the
detainees' experience under wraps.
I am writing to ask for your support in protesting to Sandwell Council.
I have spoken to the three families in Tipton and we would like other
organisations and individuals to contact the Leader of the Council,
Bill Thomas to ask that they be allowed to use the centre for their
meeting.
In addition to the phone calls made to the Council, two of the
families have already made applications in writing and at least
one of their solicitors have also written asking for the Council to
confirm that use of the Community Centre will be granted. The council
will not send them a written denial to their request!!
Please help raise awareness of the plight of our brothers by

The Muslim Association of Britain Presents:
NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION FOR PALESTINE
Date: Saturday 27th September
Venue: Central London (more details coming soon)
Palestine has been under the occupation of the Zionists for more
than 50 years, and the Al Aqsa Holy Mosque for 36 years, during
which we have seen the word 'oppression' gain a new meaning.
Millions of Palestinians have been deprived of their homes,
land, possessions and an opportunity to live without the fear and
threat of murder or oppression. Allies of the Zionist state in the
West have continuously tried to shift our focus through 'peace'
processes. There will be peace only when there is justice and
freedom for all in a Palestinian state with all its land,
resources and its people, Insha Allah.
There is a sense of despondency at the moment. But we cannot
afford this pessimism and hopelessness with so much at stake.
Hope and success does not come by sitting and hoping. It is only
through real effort that this is achieved. On September 27th we
mark the 3rd anniversary of the return of heroic Palestinian
resistance, the Intifadah, by expressing our solidarity with
our brothers and sisters in Palestine, thereby Insha Allah,
strengthening the movement for Freedom to the Palestinian people.
On September 27th we renew our commitment to creating a just
and peaceful world, by also demanding the end of the occupation
of Iraq. The demonstration is jointly organised by The Muslim
Association of Britain, Stop the War Coalition, CND, and Friends
of Al Aqsa.

LESSONS FROM THE EARLY CONVERTS TO ISLAM
by Brother Abu Muntasir
Date: Sunday 28th September 2003
Time: 11am - 1pm
The Prophet (saw) said: "The best of my nation is my generation then
those who follow them and then those who follow them." (Sahih Bukhari)
At one time this Message (Islam) created a generation - the generation
of the Companions of the Prophet (saw) - without comparison in the
history of Islam, even in the entire history of man. After this, no
other generation of this calibre was ever to be found again. It is
true that we do find some individuals of this calibre here and there
in history, but never did a great number of such people exist in one
region as was the case during the first period of Islam. What was
unique about the early converts of Islam - the 'Qur'anic Generation'.
Why was this? What lessons can we take from them? How can we can apply
these lessons today? Are we anywhere near them?
Insha'Allah, we look forward to seeing you there in what promises be
a highly informative and enlightening lecture and Q&A session.

Kufa Gallery Presents:
RU'YA ART EXHIBITION
Dates: Wednesday 1st October - Friday 10th October 2003
Time: All day starting at 10.00 am (6.30pm on the opening day)
Venue: Westbourne Hall, 26 Westbourne Grove, London W2 5RH
Nearest Tube: Royal Oak / Bayswater
Ru'ya, meaning "Vision" or "Dream" is an inspired art exhibition
showing art works by Farouq Molloy, John Kingerlee and Eugenie
Vronskaya. Having exhibited before individually, this is the
first time that these up and coming artists will show together.
Each body of work is different, but the artists feel that they
can draw on the best of their European backgrounds and heritage
to produce original work. There is, however, another common
thread: Islam. With Europeans embracing Islam in increasing
numbers, and with many non-Muslims curious about Islam, this
show offers a fresh perspective on what it is to be a European
Muslim artist. The Exhibition promises to fascinate all those
interested in the developing field of modern art inspired by
the Islamic World."

Dates: Saturday 4th October (For Women)
Sunday 5th October (For Men)
Venue: Madinatul Uloom, Butts Lane, Summerfield, Kidderminster, DY10
When the words of the Prophet (saw) are recited, there is a shower of
blessings just as when the words of Allah (swt) are recited. In view
of this auspicous nature of the words of the Prophet (saw), we have
conducted classes of hadeeth in both the men's institutions (Darul
Uloom / Madinatul Uloom) and the women's institution (Jamiatul Imam
Muhammed Zakariyya). We are nearing the end of our academic year,
and are about to complete the teaching of the six books of hadeeth.
We are holding a completion and graduation ceremony so that all
brothers and sisters may have an opportunity to participate in the
final lesson in hadeeth. Following the success of previous
conferences, we would once again like to extend an invitation to
all sincere seekers of knowledge to this years Bukhari Graduation
Ceremony. In addition to participating in the blessed completion
of Sahih al-Bukhari (the most authentic book after the Qur'an), the
event aims to provide the listeners with an opportunity to benefit
from the intellectual and spiritual attentions of the Ulama over a
period of two days in the tranquil and natural surroundings of
Madinatul Uloom al Islamiyyah. Your support and participation would
be most appreciated and mutually beneficial, inshaAllah.
The conference activities will include recitation by different
Qurra, and speeches in English and Urdu aimed at providing spiritual
guidance and instruction. Food & Accommodation will be provided.

MAKING MUSLIMS THE PRODUCERS OF TOMORROW
IMASE Entrepreneurs aims to build a business forum linking students,
professionals, entrepreneurs, financiers and researchers. Seminars
and workshops will provide a platform for participants to exchange
ideas and experiences, as well as overcome barriers to successful
commercialisation. This medium term programme will be of particular
interest to individuals intending to start up successful business
ventures in the near future.
The International Muslim Association of Scientists & Engineers (IMASE)
is a young organisation set up to nurture and exploit knowledge within
an Islamic Framework for the advancement of humanity. It was started
in 2001 aiming to form a network of students, researchers and
professionals to engage critically and constructively with challenges
related to their expertise, Science and Technology. Over a two-year
period we have, by the grace of Allah, managed to launch awareness and
activity based projects in the areas of Water Resources, Mentoring,
Development, Environment, Organic Farming, Philosophy of Science and
Alumni Development.
The Launch will be a networking opportunity for all stakeholders in
enterprise. Our vision is to translate our collective expertise into

PREPARATION FOR RAMADAN (MONTH OF FASTING) - 1 Day Intensive Course
Teacher: Shaykh Haytham Tamim (Utrujj, London)
Date: Saturday 18th October 2003
Time: 9.30 am - 6.00 pm
Alhamdulillah the month of Ramadan is approaching and if Allah (swt)
gives us the ability we will fast. Unfortunately for many it has
become the 'month of sleeping' and instead of reforming oneself it
has turned into a cultural practice or 'a thing we must do', hence
devoid of all the benefits a person could gain. The root cause of
this is ignorance. Year after year the same questions pop up. How
can we 'really' make use of Ramadan in a practical way. The answer
lies in preparing for it! This specially designed course will help
you explain the following:
* Fasting - proofs, obligations, breaking fast
* Permissible and non-permissible actions
* Taraaweeh
* Moon Sighting
* Eid ul-Fitr and Zakat ul-Fitr
* Differences in opinion
* Other types of fasting
* Women and fasting
* Making up fasts
... and many other issues that are closely related to Ramadan.

I would like to know of specific examples of discrimination,
how it arose, how it was communicated (words used/body
language/other behaviour), consequences of any action taken;
how the organisation dealt with complaints; But more
importantly, I am keen to learn how discrimination is
communicated or expressed in the workplace. I can send you
a brief form to insert that information if you contact me
at the email address below. Your help will be most valuable.
Rest assured I am not a lawyer, member of the Police force
or any other official agency. I run my own training/marketing/
project management consultancy called 'Acumen'. Please respond
to the e-mail address below: [email protected]
Many thanks,

Association of Britain, Stop the War Coalition, CND, and Friends
of Al Aqsa.

Islamic Circles Presents:

Directions by Road (From Birmingham and the North West):
Leave M5 at Junction 3. Take the A456 (Kidderminster) until you
reach Hagley. Take the left fork at the garage onto A450 heading
towards Worcester. Proceed for 5 miles until you reach the Mustow
Green roundabout. Go straight over roundabout, still on the A450
to Worcester. Less than 1 mile along this road you will see a
phonebox. Turn right into Heath Lane. After it you will find
Madinatul Uloom is a few hundred yards on the right.

PREPARATION FOR RAMADAN (MONTH OF FASTING) - 1 Day Intensive Course
Teacher: Shaykh Haytham Tamim (Utrujj, London)
Date: Saturday 18th October 2003
Time: 9.30 am - 6.00 pm
Alhamdulillah the month of Ramadan is approaching and if Allah (swt)
gives us the ability we will fast. Unfortunately for many it has
become the 'month of sleeping' and instead of reforming oneself it
has turned into a cultural practice or 'a thing we must do', hence
devoid of all the benefits a person could gain. The root cause of
this is ignorance. Year after year the same questions pop up. How
can we 'really' make use of Ramadan in a practical way. The answer
lies in preparing for it! This specially designed course will help
you explain the following:
* Fasting - proofs, obligations, breaking fast
* Permissible and non-permissible actions
* Taraaweeh
* Moon Sighting
* Eid ul-Fitr and Zakat ul-Fitr
* Differences in opinion
* Other types of fasting
* Women and fasting
* Making up fasts
... and many other issues that are closely related to Ramadan.
