  • Kashmir bans lavish Weddings

The government in Indian-administered Kashmir has put curbs on excessively lavish weddings.

Parents of brides cannot invite more than 500 guests, and the number has been limited to 400 for grooms.

The government also said that no more than seven main dishes can be served to "ensure that there is no wastage of any food items".

An MP has also proposed a bill to impose a similar ban on expensive weddings across India.
◾Curb sought on excessive Indian weddings
◾Images of India's huge and controversial wedding
    ◾Lavish wedding angers cash-hit Indians

Weddings are expensive in Kashmir, and the traditional feast, locally called Wazwan, includes a range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Traditional Kashmiri wedding food is hugely popular

The state government said the order, which comes into effect from 1 April, was issued in response to public complaints about extravagance, waste and intrusive noise.

The state had imposed a similar ban in 1984, but it was revoked after protests.

Marriages are costly in other parts of India as well, and many people spend lavishly on food, clothes and entertainment.

In November, the five-day wedding of businessman and former Karnataka state minister G Janardhana Reddy's daughter, Brahmani, with an estimated cost of about 5bn rupees ($74m; £59m), prompted outrage as millions of Indians struggled with a cash flow crisis.

Among the extravagances were gold-plated invitation cards fitted with LCD screens, costing 10m rupees.

This is good news, especially for the brides family who are socially pressured into spending huge amounts on the wedding. Seven dishes is still too many though, but its a step in the right direction.

But the flip side of this is that families are will now be expected to get "creative" to get around this band.

A friend of mine got married in Pakistan at a time when there was a ban on and you were only allowed to hire a small hall and serve one dish per course. She had a huge wedding in a park, and I asked her how she did that with the ban on. She told me that people only use the ban as an excuse to save money and that her family had bribed the grounds man or something for access. She clearly believed that was the 'right thing to do'.

But the revelation that cometh to thee from Allah increaseth in most of them (kuffar) their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy.Amongst them we have placed enmity and hatred till the Day of Judgment. Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah doth extinguish it;but they (ever) strive to do mischief on earth. And Allah loveth not those who do mischief."(5:64)

This is sick, when Allah has not placed limits on someone spending on something, y does such communist minded gov have to intervene..
and parents of bride can invite makes is even more sick, they should just ban that all out as its haram, y can they invite more then the grooms :s
hope the muslims of kashmir soon are able to free themselves from the hindu rule..

All this is emotional crap from the gov ministers to fool the poor people (surprised people even here are tricked), at least the remaining food is distributed amongst the poor, but if no excess food is cook then its very unlikely it would be of any benefit to the poor, so they end up getting no food and no jobs in cooking food, wow what a benefit for the poor. To make things better in real need more then emotions and good will.

And y r people such fool, complaining of others, if they r so free as to not have anything else better to do in life then honestly they talk should be ignored and they should go do some work to improve their conditions. Allah has given someone money its upto that person how he spends it, people do unislamic things and consider it islam due to their emotions..

In fact people r so stupid that they dont realize that if the rich people stop spending money, how will their cashflow improve and how will they get jobs :s and even if they r not affected then how does a man spending his money bothers them i dont get this sick mentality, it would in essence mean that one they when they become rich they should never enjoy their wealth too coz other people wont like it.. haha how much desi can one get, imagine if it was a white man spending, then it will be oh yes sir u deserve more etc... reading this u can know y many people r poor coz they r extremely jealous of others, and they should focus on themselves more then others.. spending on ones self is not haram at all, however spying on other and being jealous of others is haram..

This may help u understand y many people have cashflow problems, coz they r too stupid to understand facts and realities, and just base their decisions and lives on emotions..

So what if there r gold plated cards etc.. did he ask anyone of us for money? what should we do about it?
would u people be acting this way if u were writing this in a forum of white people lol

just an economic check, the more the wealthy spend the better it is for the poor, just that people dont know and they act based on jealousy mostly..

There is absolutely no place for lavish wedding in Islam . On the other hand, poor Muslims who cannot afford expensive, wasteful weddings need no lose their self respect and confidence andborrow to their neck for these senseless expenditures

you are missing the point. Extravagance and wastefulness is unislamic.

well actually ur missing the point, what is more unislamic is looking at what others r doing, and taking their rights away to utilize their money..
btw extravagance and wastefulness r qualitative terms and depends alot on perception, anyone would first have to prove y is there understanding of extravagance accurate..
anyhow everyone has different living styles and standards, what is normal for one is extravagance for other and u or someone else is no one to judge,
infact as i earlier wrote nothing is wasteful, to be honest with u as i said people r so stupid that they r fine if that man keeps the money all his life in the back without any use or enjoying himself, but when hes using it and providing poor people with jobs then there is a problem how stupid can people be..

this is a clear example of people crossing limits in implementing what is technically not allowed by sharia to be implemented as a law, as i see it more out of jealousy then anything else just coz they cant do it..

And lastly there is nothing unislamic in extravagance, muslims r suppose to be the rulers of the world and there can be nothing more extravagant then that lol ,, people develop such understanding of islam based on emotions that they dont want to see someone else enjoy what they themselves cant, and thats it, coz as i said if they want to be a better muslim then talking of others and their personal life is infact alot worse..

                      Re: Kashmir bans lavish Weddings

                      :salam:

While extravagance is relative. (i.e. a billionaire having 12 billion $$$, using 12 million on a wedding, may not be extravagant, but for someone earning a normal 3000-4000$ salary, a month, paying 40000$ or 4m$ is extravagant)

But even if one is rich, does not mean one has to. But in either case, it is relative.

A billionaire's toy, may be a poor man's mansion or something.

Tho, even if rich, one should not be distracted by one's wealth and this dunyah. This dunyah is a fading shadow. So to be distracted by dunya (I.e. forgetting the Akhira, not praying, etc. Not reading Qur'aan, etc.) is bad.

                      Allahu alam.
La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa 'ala kulli sha'in Qadir
(there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him; His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent),'
Do not say about Allah but Truth.

it depends on personal preference, y is ur understanding of extravagance more superior to that of anyone else's, and what right does someone have of restraining someone else from utilizing his/her owned property,, u see this is where the problem lies.. and u r completely ignoring the very strict ruling in islam of personal freedom, and personal right to ownership.
what has the world become into, all throughout history people who spent more were always looked up upon and respected,
u think he will be able to keep that much money and yet be as stupid as u make him sound,, honestly even if anyone is stupid muslims should be accepting to them as well, who said islam is the religion of only the smart and intelligent.
here is the problem if someone is stupid but is not infringing anyone else's rights, then y do they the other people have a problem with it? should they be allowed to restrict that behavior of others which the other person has full right too? and if yes, then based on what ruling islamicially?

i only see it as jealousy only, first u say its unislamic, not its stupid :S like y is it bothering u or anyone else for that matter,,
u said its unislamic, show me evidence from islam then but there is none so now its stupid, if u read what i wrote first u will realize its not at all stupid and infact very good for the society, lets see what will the issue be with it now lol
