  • What does it mean to "give your daughter" for marriage?

I hear this term come up quite often and I don't understand it.
Are daughters really just like an item to give to someone else? Do they have a choice in the matter?
I thought forced marriages were haraam
Or am I being too modern?

    Assalaamu alaykum,

A woman is under the responsibility of her family, specifically her father. Then she marries, and that responsibility then transfers to her husband. As long as she is asked, and all her rights are respected I have no issue with the terminology.

        Ws.
The reason why families cry during the brides "give a way"/ or rukshati is because shes going to be cared by another man in Sha Allah and responsibility lies on her husband now, not her father.

As sad as it is, its part of life...

        In Sha Allah

She is given away respectfully and according to her will. She is not thrown away like the brother said there is nothing wrong with this phrase. If anything I would say it sounds very polite.

"Can I have your daughter's hand in marriage?"
"Sure, let me just slice it off for you."
Secure few moments, everyday, to reflect upon the innumerable blessings of Allah and thank Him for bestowing them upon you.

"A person who is blessed with the ability to be grateful, shall never be deprived of barakah and increase in blessings."
