We all know that a wali cannot force his daughter to marry someone against her wishes...however, do wali's have the authority to prevent their daughter from marrying someone she wants? If so, what is the source for that.

The answer is basically yes he can prevent a marriage but if this turns into a continual denial, for no good reason of piety then a new Wali can be found.
