i want to know what people think of changing sex's (transexuals)

I can't believe this was brought up, subhan Allah.. never thought an issue like this needed to be addressed:

These people who hate the sex with which they were created and wish that they were of the other sex, are in fact mentally ill. It may be caused by a bad upbringing in some cases, and by the nature of the society in which they live in other cases, which makes them hate the way they are. So they object to the decree of Allaah and they want to change their sex from one to the other.



This operation is haraam in Islam, according to all the reputable contemporary scholars. The earlier scholars did not discuss it because it was not known and was not possible during their time. The fact that it is forbidden is indicated by a number of things, including the following:

Firstly: the verses in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):













Undoubtedly doing such operations is a kind of toying with and changing the creation of Allaah.

Secondly: It is proven in al-Saheeh

Ibn Hajar said: For men to imitate women and women to imitate men, deliberately and by choice, is haraam according to scholarly consensus.

Thirdly: the Prophet <!--#include virtual="/saws.htm" -->(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade hermaphrodites to enter upon women, if they pay attention to women and their charms, and he ordered that they be banned from living among people so as to guard against their evil.

Ibn Hajar said: What we learn from this is that women should observe hijab before those hermaphrodites who pay attention to women's charms, and that they should be banned from living among people, as a means to deter them. And it seems that doing this is obligatory.

Fourthly: According to specialist doctors, this kind of operation is not indicated by any kind of sound medical evidence, and it is no more than the matter of personal whims and desires.

Based on the above, it is not permissible under any circumstances for a woman to be alone with him, or to uncover or take off her hijab in front of him, because he is in fact male, even though he may now feel attracted towards males, because of the many female hormones in his system. Undoubtedly these people are worse than the hermaphrodites whom the Prophet <!--#include virtual="/saws.htm" -->(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade to enter upon men, and ordered that they be banned from living among the people.

Hence it may be more appropriate for more than one person to meet with him, and to take him to a trustworthy psychologist who can treat his illness. We ask Allaah to guide him and set his affairs straight.

You could speak to a trustworthy Shaykh or seeker of knowledge, and ask him to receive this person and teach him about his religion and its rulings, and strengthen his ties with Islam and help him to grow steadfast in his faith. This should be done in the presence of more than one person. You should also understand that after doing as much as you can for this person, guidance is in the hand of Allaah; He guides whomsoever He will of His slaves. And Allaah knows best

This thread focuses on issues relating to intersex (hermaphrodites to laymen folk), and whether a gender should be assigned to those who are born with ambiguous genitalia.

We are not talking about people who wish to change gender because they suffer from Gender Identity Disorder (born the wrong sex) - Transexuals.

Not all of them are mentally ill. Some are born with any of a range of physical conditions that affect the physical development of the gentials. In some cases a baby can be born with the genetalia of the opposite sex. These conditions need to be treated with hormones and surgery at some stage, but there are serious issues with operating on small children, and in some cases the actual gender of the baby is not known until he/she grows older. It is essential for Muslims to distinguish between those people with physical conditions like this, who suffer serious amounts of prejudice and suspicion even as children - from those who are physically normal but have psychological problems that make them think they should be the opposite sex. What kind of person treats someone born with a physical handicap or medical condition in such a terrible way?

In addition, I don't think it is right to refer to mentally ill people as "sickos" - they need our help, not our derision. There are many types of mental illness and they cause immense suffering to the people who have them and their families. Perhaps if people were kinder to young people who have psychological problems to do with gender identity, it might make it a little easier to help some of them. And the same goes for people suffering from other psychological issues and mental illness. The earlier these things are treated and dealt with, the more likely the person is to recover.

yeah, most people do. I know someone who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, and it has completely ruined his life. the only person he was ever a danger to was to himself (suicide is infinitely more common among people with schyzophrenia than murder!) and he is unable to work because of his illness, and the affects of the drugs to treat it (side affects are really awful, but at least its not as bad as the disease itself, which is mostly better from the drugs but not completely, he still gets attacks of it now and then, where he hears voices that shout insults at him constantly) yet everyone outside the medical profession views him as some kind of seriously dangerous weirdo, such that you can't even tell people what is wrong with him... when in fact he is probably one of the most gentle and sensitive people I know.

I know about people's attitudes towards those suffering from severe mental ill health (which is what schizophrenia comes under). Media portrayal plays some part in it..though not all.

actually what really annoys me is when people say "i'm so schizophrenic" when they mean "I'm quite changable in my moods and how I sometimes behave" or "I'm a little bit unconventional and like to let my hair down occasionally and/or defy one or two cultural norms" because it really shows a total lack of understanding or empathy for anyone that has this awful disease.
