Not being technically homeless i.e. having shelter does not mean you may not have to resort to begging.

Tired of this distrust of the people in society most in need of our compassion. Also, can't believe DM and Daily Express are still being quoted on UF.
And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers." (11) Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not. (12) - Surat al-Baqarah

If someone asks you for money, say "what for?", and then if it's reasonable offer to go with them to the shop to buy it. If they act funny and insist on money then you know they were lying.

              It's really bad in London.
On the one hand you have a huge homeless population and serious issues, on the other lots of crooks.

Tbf, in winter especially, you just feel sorry for them and give some change. Maybe they will spend it on food and hostel rather than alcohol, drugs and cigarettes.

Buy them food instead. Some hang around food shops, others nearby.

                  Not all.

some could be EU migrants, not working and therefore not entitled to benefits

My heart sinks when I see a homeless person. I can't even look at them because it's always a reminder to me that, that could have been me

It's horrible that they're in such a horrible situation, but here a lot of them are on drugs or have drinking issues and they use the money to fuel that addiction.

It's true, even with benefits sometimes people still cannot afford to even pay for basic food. Also many people really are on the streets due to mental health and there are many factors that lead to mental health issues that really need to be addressed, rather than just saying, 'Well people waste all their money on alcohol or drugs and so they end up with mental health issues'. Why did that happen? We can address many of these issues, starting with addressing alcohol abuse more. Obviously I realise there is much incentive not to deal with these issues and that's the point, they're not dealt with and then the average citizen who probably doesn't have a lot of wealth to begin with is faced with taking pity on the homeless when it is the government who fails them by prioritising big companies and their interests.

However, there are definitely many liars and peddlers out there. I'm just very wary taking out money in public like that, at the most I'd be willing to share any food I'm carrying.

O' Converter of Hearts, make my heart steadfast upon Thy Way
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.

The UK government have got blood on their hands. They have made changes to the benefits system that have driven people to suicide and homelessness. There was a scandal uncovered a while back that the DWP had told Job Centres to 'sanction' (i.e. cut off the JSA) of at least 2 people per week regardless of whether they deserved to be sanctioned or not. So some poeple - normal people - went from working, to unemployment, to JSA, to NOTHING. And then Ian Duncan Smith has the audacity to say he brought the claimant count down under his leadership -- he just made the people who actually need such help homeless. They are no longer 'claiming' not because you put them in employment but because you took their benefits and made them homeless!!

And that's just the tip of the ice berg. Don't even get me started on ATOS and the 'fit to work' bullying going on.

No, it benefits the agenda of the government to demonise the poor rather than encourage compassion. This way they can call for further austerity for the poor while they give the benefits of socialism (i.e. bailouts) to their rich friends.

This is just one of the many reasons I question why people support this man-made system. If a system of governance is created by rich white men, why would they protect and serve the interests of anyone else if it meant sacrificing their own wealth??
