What constitutes true freedom? Let's look at the 'West' for example.
The belief that the West is "free" is a misconception. First, we must define what "freedom" and being "free" are. It is true that the West has less governmental restrictions than non-Western countries, and that is one idea of freedom. But there are freedoms from other problems in life that the West has failed to achieve. Thus, what has replaced governmental interference as the source of lack-of-freedom? Hedonism.
The population of the West, like other nations, despite calling themselves "free" and despite being free from government interference, are shackled by the bonds of materialism, consumerism, greed, covetousness, lust, sexual addiction, drug addiction, and lack of any kind of moral restrictions. An unrestricted indulgence in sensual gratification under the guise of "freedom" has torn apart families and lead to the governmental looting of the citizens. Alcoholism, drug addiction, and sexual indulgence have become the new norm, with many Westerners believing this to be "freedom" that "isn't hurting anyone", while although not inflicting physical damage onto others, these actions have tremendous consequences on family, state, and social life.
Thus, having succumbed to the darker forces of nature, and being slaves to lust and desire, the minds of most Westerners are overwhelmed with anxiety, anger, hatred, and an unquenchable desire to satisfy their carnal desires.
This is not real "freedom". However, one with a pure, chaste mind, modest behavior, and who controls his sense organs, at least achieves real happiness, inner peace, and freedom from suffering which is what Islam promotes & stands for.
May Allah guide us well to a healthy and a peaceful lifestyle.
