Who is more misguided than someone who follows his own lust & desires without having any guidance from Allah? Allah does not guide wrongdoing folk. 28:50
True freedom is and happiness is attained by worshiping Allah as best as you can, and being the best person you are able to. A study recently found out that altruistic individuals experience a sense of fulfillment and happiness that others yearn for: the secret to happiness is helping others. This what exactly what Islam teaches and encourages us Muslims to follow and do. Look at the examples of the companions of the Prophet, etc. They went above and beyond to help others.
May Allah protect us all from our own selfish and destructive lusts & desires. Amen.
