Re: Is lamb / sheep / mutton expensive where you live?

Yes, have no idea why! Sheep are COMMON.

Edit: I found why lamb is expensive. In this answer, the farmer also raises pork and compares teh two (OBVIOUSLY we don't eat pork, but it shows why lamb is expensive to raise).

Melissa T pretty much it the nail on the head... it comes down to HOW they are reared and raised.

Our Sow will produce 8 piglets each cycle (roughly every 4 months)... and those piglets are full sized hogs (250 lbs) ready for slaughter in 5 months. We feed our pigs old vegetables (which we often get free), mixed feed... and the pigs only require a pen about 30x30 feet with a small house for cold weather (though ours have an additional acre to forage... acorns). So they are QUICK to be ready to slaughter and require little money in feed or land. We're able to keep two hogs for our family, and then sell the other 6 to family / friends.

Our sheep however reproduce only twice a year (once if weather isn't right)... and have only one or two lambs. They require much more land to graze on... 3/4 acre per animal is the rule. We rarely have enough lamb to go around because we only keep a flock of 20 Ewes.

It is NOT supply and demand... if it was demand, pork would be MUCH higher in price.

You are not here just to fill space or to be a background character in someone else's movie. Consider this: nothing would be the same if you did not exist. Every place you have ever been and everyone you have ever spoken to would be different without you. We are all connected, and we are all affected by the decisions and even the existence of those around us.

      :wswrwb:

Different parts of lamb cost different prices.

Shoulder, leg and chops are expensive but lamb neck and ribs are like half their price.

WOW thats quite a bargain for beef :masha: its even cheaper than poultry?, if it was this cheap here, i would have that instead of lamb

IT depends on who's selling the beef. The beef I mentioned was 80% lean ground beef. Here's an example of prices in socal (non halaal):

here mince meat have different prices again lol if its 'mixed mince then its cheap but if the meat is minced from a particular part of the animal like leg for instance then tis expensive.

non halal outlets are always cheaper than halal ones i have noticed that.

http://www.mullaco.com/fresh-halal-meat/categories.html these are uk prices at one shop, other shops are more or less same.

I visited a halaal shop yesterday and saw lamb. I thought i'd try it since I've never had it before. But then I saw it was 7$ a pound! (4.22gbp for .45 kg). And they were only selling it in 6 pound (2.3kg) chunks...

Is this a normal price for sheep? The beef right next to it was only 1.50 and the chicken 1.98.
sheep must be rare in america, hence the high price. In UK, its the main meat everyone eats so its cheaper.

personally I find beef too rich and has a very strong taste.

we do that. we buy a half lamb, divide it into 8-9 portions of meat, put the meat into plastic bags and then freeze it.

Our main meat is chicken, then beef, then pork and turkey. Deer, sheep, goat and horse are lower in ranks. The only camel farm in the US is actually near me and they only sell dairy camels not meat. If they know you're going to eat it they refuse to sell to you :rotfl:

I dont have a clue about meat to be honest as I dont buy stuff as my parents do all the shopping. It has to be kinda expansive for us as we do consume a lot of meat. Good thing is that my family friend has a meat shop so may be we get it a bit cheaper.

I do know that fish is expensive as I have recently been to the shops to buy it and I was surprised.
