  • Dutch Parliament bans halal slaughter and kosher.

(Reuters) - The Dutch parliament voted on Tuesday to ban ritual slaughter of animals, a move strongly opposed by the country's Muslim and Jewish minorities, but left a loophole that might let religious butchering continue.
The bill by the small Animal Rights Party, the first such group in Europe to win seats in a national parliament, passed the lower house of parliament by 116 votes to 30. It must be approved by the upper house before becoming law.
It stipulates that livestock must be stunned before being slaughtered, contrary to the Muslim halal and Jewish kosher laws that require animals to be fully conscious.

"This way of killing causes unnecessary pain to animals. Religious freedom cannot be unlimited," said Marianne Thieme, head of the Animal Rights Party, said before the vote. "For us religious freedom stops where human or animal suffering begins."
In a rare show of unity, the Netherlands' Muslim and Jewish communities -- numbering about 1 million and 40,000 respectively in a total population of 16 million -- have condemned the proposed ban as a violation of their religious freedom.
"The very fact that there is a discussion about this is very painful for the Jewish community," Netherlands Chief Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs told Reuters.

"Those who survived the (second world) war remember the very first law made by the Germans in Holland was the banning of schechita or the Jewish way of slaughtering animals."
Uca Octay of Rotterdam's Islamic University said: "We will have to import halal meat from neighboring countries or find another way to meet the needs of the Muslim population."

    PAIN IMPOSSIBLE TO PROVE
The law said religious groups could continue ritual slaughter if they proved it was no more painful than stunning, but it was not clear how to do this. The Jewish community has challenged a study on animal pain used to support the ban.
"This is absolutely impossible to prove," Jacobs said. "You can't ask the animal how it feels afterwards."
Britain's Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks visited the Netherlands last week to lobby against the law, arguing that pre-stunning failed in up to 10 percent of cases and that caused more pain than the swift cutting of the throat by a razor-sharp knife.
Philip Carmel, International Relations Director for the Conference of European Rabbis in Brussels, stressed the upper house of parliament could still reject the law. "We believe the Dutch parliament and people, who have a history of tolerance, will see sense and make the right decision," he said.

Dutch Muslims, mostly of Turkish and Moroccan origin, have complained they felt stigmatized by the planned ban, debated amid growing support for anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders.
A court cleared Wilders last week of charges of hate speech against Muslims. His Freedom Party has supported the ban.
"There was no reason for passing this law," said Imam Mahmut of the El Tawheed mosque in Amsterdam. "This is a political decision. Who has the authority to determine whether the way of killing animals is good or not?"

    EUROPEAN RESTRICTIONS
European Union regulations require animals to be stunned before killing but allow exceptions for ritual slaughter, which the European Court of Human Rights has ruled is a religious right. Animal rights activists insisit this is inhuman.
Carmel said the European Parliament last week rejected a bid by animal rights advocates to have kosher and halal meat specially labeled as coming from unstunned animals.
Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland ban ritual slaughter. Swiss animal rights groups and far-right politicians have called for a ban on imported halal and kosher meat.
Of the 500 million animals slaughtered annually for food in the Netherlands, only 1.2 million animals are slaughtered according to Muslim or Jewish traditions, Dutch statistics show.

Except that they are fully conscious when they are stunned, and the stun gun itself causes pain to the animal. The correct halal method of slaugter requires a deep cut to the throat with a sharp knife, severing the artery to the brain. The sudden drop in blood pressure caused by the severence of the carotid artery results in instant loss of consciousness. The fact that the knife is sharp means that the cut does not cause immediate pain, which means that the animal loses consciousness before it feels any pain. It's also a requirement that the animal doesn't know what is going to happen to it, i.e. it doesn't watch other animals being slaughtered first, and doesn't see the knife.

Ask survivors of shark attacks about this, where they've had their arm or leg bitten off and not even noticed until they looked down because there was no pain. Maybe you've experienced this yourself, because I know people who've cut themselves quite badly on very sharp things and not noticed. Being cut with a blunt knife, on the other hand, hurts a lot. The Qur'an *specifically* states that the knife must be sharp.

The animal thrashes around after their throat is cut, this is a reflex response to a sudden, severe drop of blood pressure to the brain. The animal is not conscious while they are having this response, because there is no blood going to their brain. Alive, yes, conscious, no. The thrashing around is the body's attempt to increase blood pressure to the brain. I know someone who experienced this; he donated blood for the first time, and after donation he passed out and had a seisure due to his blood pressure dropping rapidly. What he experienced was like fainting, i.e. conscious one moment, unconscious the next. He didn't know about the seisure until the staff told him after he'd regained consciuosness. The siesure was due to the sudden drop in blood pressure, it was not a seisure like in epilepsy (he's definitely not epileptic), it was just a reflex action to the sudden, drastic drop in blood pressure.

So the halal method of slaughter (and the kosher one if it also requires the use of a sharp knife and a deep cut to sever the arteries to the brain and the animal not seeing other animals being slaughtered during its lifetime) means that the animal passes out before they know what's happened to them or feel any pain in their throat. Stunning makes slaughter more pleasant to watch for people than a deep cut to the throat, due to the lack of thrashing around and the fact you can make a shallow cut so the animal bleeds to death slowly so there's not blood spurting everywhere..... but the deep cut to the throat means instant loss of conscousness and no chance of regaining consciousness before death, because the blood supply to the brain isn't going to suddenly come on again.

Re: Dutch Parliament bans halal slaughter and kosher.

^^^ this can be argued scientifically, because every doctor and physiologist knows that severing the carotid artery results in a sudden and drastic enough drop in blood pressure to render the animal immediately unconscious, and it's also very well known that sharp knives and sharks teeth can cut through flesh without causing any immediate sensation of pain. So it would not be difficult to argue the above, and the religious people in this need to demand proof that stunning doesn't cause pain and that it renders the animal fully unconscious and not merely immobile and unable to respond to pain. I'm assuming that the Jews mentioned in the article already explained that, so I can only assume that their argument was dismissed on the grounds that they don't like religious people. "Cruel barbaric religious people doing ritual slaughter" sounds a lot more dramatic than "animal rights activists being mistaken about animal physiology" doesn't it?

That;s why you need butchers who know what they are doing.
