  • Honey 'cure' for hangover

    We could've told em that...

Got a bad hangover? Try honey on toast, says a new study.

Researchers from the Royal Society of Chemistry claim to have found that taking honey, the natural sweetener, is a great way to help the human body deal with the toxic effects of a hangover.

According to them, the fructose in the honey which is also found in golden syrup -is essential to help the body break down alcohol into harmless by-products.

"The happiness comes from alcohol. The hangover comes from acetaldehyde. This is the toxic chemical into which alcohol is converted by the body and it causes a throbbing headache, nausea, and may be even vomiting.

"The hangover disappears as the acetaldehyde is slowly converted to less toxic chemicals,"'The Daily Telegraph'quoted lead researcher Dr John Emsley as saying.

According to him, serving the honey on toast adds potassium and sodium to the meal which also helps the body cope with the alcohol.

Dr Emsley also said that drinking a glass of milk first, sticking to clear alcohols such as gin and mixing in the occasional soft drink were helpful as was sinking a pint of water before you go to bed.

He added:"The milk slows down the absorption of alcohol, which means there is less acetaldehyde for the body to deal with at any one time.

"Gin is alcohol twice purified by distillation and the botanical flavours it contains are mere traces. Avoid dark coloured drinks which contain natural chemicals that can adversely affect you.

Why do we have a hangover cure on a Muslim forum??

Khair, but wouldnt it be better to do so in manner that would benefit the posters on the forum......?

The original post is rather obsolete, given that alcohol is haraam as per the shaariah, and thinking good of one another would lead one to assume that we dont drink Alhumdollilahh

Finding a cure in the sunnah for the effects of something that is already made haraam negates all common sense, dont you think?

Known for a long time in many cultures...
                    http://www.honey-health.com/honey-14.shtml
Honey must have been abundant in ancient Egypt. The He-brews referred to it as "a land flowing with milk and honey." The Egyptian papyri are full of praise about the curative properties of honey. The Papyrus Ebers especially praised its medicinal value. According to this most ancient source of knowledge, honey was not only a staple commodity but a popular medicine, extensively used internally, and also externally in surgical dressings for burns, ulcers and preeminently for weakness and inflammation of the eyes. Laxative and worm remedies of ancient Egypt without exception contained honey. Milk and honey was their choice for infant feeding. There were only a few medicines in ancient Egypt which did not contain honey. The bee, its producer, occupies a prominent place in all hieroglyphic writings. Most prescriptions of the papyri were taken to Greece and the Greeks introduced them to Europe where they are still used today.

In ancient China honey was used only as a component of diets and as a medicine. The Chinese never utilized honey as a sweetening substance. China is the native land of the sugar cane, and for this reason bees were rarely cultivated. Even today in the interior of China, honey can be obtained only in the old-style medicine shops.

In Ayurveda which is at least 4000 years old medicine originating from India, honey is considered to affect positively in all three primitive material imbalances of the body. "Vaatalam guru sheetam cha raktapittakaphapaham| Sandhatru cchedanam ruksham kashayam madhuram madhu||" "It has sweetness with added astringent as end taste. It is heavy, dry and cold. Its effect on doshas (imbalances) is that it aggravates vata (air / moving forces), scrapes kapha (mucus / holding forces) and normalizes pitta (catabolic fire) and rakta (blood). It promotes healing process."

Wound gels that contain antibacterial raw honey and have regulatory approval for wound care are now available to help medicine in the battle against drug resistant strains of bacteria MRSA. As an antimicrobial agent honey may have the potential for treating a variety of ailments.[53] One New Zealand researcher says a particular type of honey (Manuka honey) may be useful in treating MRSA infections.[54] Antibacterial properties of honey are the result of the low water activity causing osmosis, hydrogen peroxide effect,[55] high acidity,[56] and the antibacterial activity of methylglyoxal.[57]

Honey appears to be effective in killing drug-resistant biofilms which are implicated in chronic rhinosinusitis.[58]
