  • eid turning into christmas???

    salam all,
During the days running upto eid I have noticed that most people are usually shopping like crazy for that 'eid outfit' or 'eid present' haul instead of making the most of Ramadan. As a young girl I remember waking upto my eid clothes ready to put on before I went to the mosque with my family to pray eid prayers, afterwards we would come and open gifts and have a nice long breakfast!!!

However I have noticed over the years that eid has become something of a task that people stress over, what to wear, where to go, what shall i buy for so and so. instead of a celebration eid has become a day that people spend crazy amounts of money on and to be frank its starting to look like christmas!!! eid decorations, eid cards, customised eid gifts, eid holiday packages, leaflets on how to avoid 'the eid shopping ques'. some people believe that these things are a biddah.

Yes give gifts, eat sweets, look nice, visit one another, fill your homes with celebration but do it so that it coincides with the deen and sunnah. :1peace:

YOU MAY DISAGREE BUT ITS JUST MY OPINION :o

I dont think there is nothing wrong with Celebrating Eid how we like as long as people dont go around ending up in Debt or spending like Crazy on Eid Presents and decorations and all...

      Celebrate according to your means!

an Eid is definately not about driving around flashing cars hooting and tooting Car horns with music blaring loud

as long its kept sensible and halal its all good!
but yet i do agree with somet extent to you

just hope it does not become overly commericalised

        Reported by Ibn al-Salah:

          WS,

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that but there will always be lazy people who are jealous about or hating on other peoples creativity and dedication to make most of a halal celebration.

i have no issue with decorating our homes and stuff, i meant its becoming commercialised to the extent where people see it as a money making and money spending fest! i myself like to make the most out of eid but i do it carefully as not to turn it into an obsession, at the end of the day there is a reason why we have eid and thats to celebrate the end of ramadan, a month where we feel how others feel and abstain from what our nafs wants. we dont want to ruin all of that effort by doing the complete opposite on the day of eid.

Well maybe some people don't want to keep it simple.

Let people enjoy Eid. If they are not doing anything haram then I think there is nothing wrong with it.

But if they are wasting a lot of money yes than I agree with you

i agree with you, let people enjoy eid, but we have been given guidelines to life and one of them is imitating the acts of the kuffar. in the UK there are many 'eid' things that are exactly like 'christmas' things, such as the countdown chocolate calendars, eid tinsel, cards saying ' i wish you a happy eid' (eid mubarak is what we have been advised to say), eid hampers, eid gift catalogues (why wait all year to give people gifts and invite all the people you hardly see to dinner, sound like xmas to you?), dont even get me started on 'eid in the square'.
come on people, you know exactly what im getting at. im stating facts not making it up, if you cant see what i mean then hopefully inshallah one day you will just as i have.
even non-muslim have said to me personally that they see no difference anymore between eid and xmas , apart from the fact that theirs is meant to be about issa alailhi salam. its in our fitra to recognise when something isnt quite right.

Allah ta`aala says: "Do not waste your wealth senselessly. Those who spend wastefully are the brothers of the Shaytans; and the Shaytan is ever ungrateful to his Lord." [Qur'an 17:26-7]

And Allah's Messenger (saws) said: "A son of Adam will not depart from his position (of reckoning) before his Lord on the day of Resurrection until he is questioned about four things:
                  - His lifetime - how did he pass it,
                  - his body - how did he utilize it,
                  - his wealth - where did he earn it, and how did he spend it
                  - and his knowledge - what did he do with it."
                  [authentic hadith related by At-Tirmidhi]

Then how about you change the title of your thread to that; commercialization because even christmas was not originally about money making and money spending.

                              :salams:

Just copying what a learned scholar said :
If exchanging Eid gifts begins to become an integral part of celebrating Eid then it would be considered bid'ah. Just like mu'aaniqah in itself is a sunnah, but the ulamah have classed it bid'ah to do mu'aaniqah after the Eid prayers as it is specifying something to a particular time and occasion that the sahabahs did not do. Same would apply to Eid gifts. When explaining the concept of bid'ah Moulana Ashraf Thanwi writes that it was enough for the sahabah to reject an action that was specified to a cretain time or place with the words 'la yuthbit' meaning it has not been proved by the Prophet or his companions. Also he explains that, if a cause for carrying out an action existed in the khayrul quroon (the time of the Messenger and the sahabah and tab 'een) and they did not perform that action, to start practising that regularly would be incorrect, as it is possible that it will lead to bid'ah. Eid occurred then too, they did not routinely give gifts out.
احب الصالحين و لست منهم لعل الله يرزقني صلاح
