Parents 'ignorant of best temperature for baby'

Medical researchers have found babies are being exposed to an increased risk of cot death because most parents do not know the correct temperature for their child's bedroom.

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths says parents should be careful not to let their babies get too hot and should use a thermometer to make sure they have a safe sleeping environment.

The poll of parents with babies under one-year-old found more than half (56%) did not know the correct temperature to keep the room where the baby sleeps.

One in five (19%) thought it should be hotter than the recommended range of 16-20C (61-68F).

Parents were also not very good at guessing the temperature of their own home.

Four out of 10 parents (40%), questioned in their own homes, thought their house was cooler than it actually was, with only 22% able to guess the temperature within two degrees Celsius.

Despite the obvious difficulties in assessing temperature, only one in three parents (32%) had a thermometer in their baby's room.

FSID director Joyce Epstein said parents needed to take simple measures to keep their babies healthy.

"The clocks have gone back and winter is setting in - it's a time to wrap up warm outdoors, but not indoors.

"Babies who get too hot are at an increased risk of cot death. Our message to parents is look at and touch your baby to see if they are too warm, and keep an eye on the room temperature. Getting a simple room thermometer will help you create a safer sleep environment for your baby."
