So a practical and a simple solution is instead of chucking music all out together and going cold turkey, replace it entirely with something better and, of course, halal, namely Qur'an al-kareem! Whenever you feel the urge to listen to music just quickly put on the Qur'an with your favourite reciter and...sit back...relax...and see the shaytaan run away into the mountais.

Admittedly I used to have to a bit of a problem with music simply because I used to be so gangster and needed The Game and Snoop Dogg to keep my "state pumped", so to speak. But thanks to the grace of Allah, by applying the simple solution aforementioned I was able to overcome my desire for lyrics pertaining to "money, hoes, sex and weed" as Nate Dogg eloquently puts it.
Those lot are pathetic..... show them some mujahadeen and they'd run a million mile!

You used to be so gangster? I'm sorry, do you live in the UK? I doubt there are any gangsters there. I'm just playing with you; I just always find it funny when people use the word gangster to refer to themselves. It's definitely not a cool thing to be. And I am not making fun of his situation, but Nate Dogg had a stroke recently...barely able to do anything for himself. So I mean this rap stuff is just self-boasting, putting women down, glorification of drugs/guns/promiscuity,etc.
Secondly, masha Allah that's good you gave up rap-all music is haram, but if there is one type of music that is even worse than the others it has to be rap. I say this as someone who used to listen to it myself. I have more street cred than some of the rappers out there and I don't say I'm gangster...and I'm white. Beat that! :D

Good words of advice, cant just go cold turkey over night.
I stopped listening to music overnight, but substituted it with nasheeds and islamic talks. Now I can actually tolerate and love the silence in the car even on long journeys.

i never conciously gave up music, but slowly realised that the feelings that accompanied the music i didnt like, it made me want to dance, go out to places music are layed, get all dressed up, made me wistfull and restless and think back to my previous life in jahiliyya, and now i cant stand it, its weird music from my youth makes me feel happy but at the same time sad, so i stay away from it, the other day i told hubby of for listening to music, and he was like huh? when do i listen to music? and it was some game on the psp that had sean paul on in the background, but even that little but of sean paul made me uncomfortable, so he changed it.

MashaAllah good to hear so many bros and sis have diverted this arrow of satan. It definitely isn't easy. You almost think you can't live without it.

Just a note for those who listen to music in the car, your life is a blessing, your car is a blessing, being kept safe is a blessing. If a truck came and smashed into your car killing you, is the last thing you want to hear music? How would the people you leave behind feel, knowing you died not with the shahada, but with a song?!

The other day i was told by my brother who was listening to a lecture and said 'you cannot have music and quran in the heart'. It leads to hypocrisy big time.

As for those who find it 'difficult' to give up. 1-make dua 2- collect all you have, thats all the musical material (be it cds/downloaded/mp3/phone) so gather them all together, count 1..2..3 and THROW THEM OUT AND DELETE THEM ALL

It is as simple as that, you aren't gonna stop if you have it. Like if its on your phone,computer,mp3,in your house then you have the ability to GET RID but if you go out and hear it then thats different coz its out of your control but you should still repel the desire to listen to it.

Don't let it draw you, again this is your jihad, reject it and fill your heart with quran instead, not music. You cannot have space for both in your heart its either one or the other.

You are the ones in control, coz you have it on your phones and can get rid of it, but it is alll about you and how bad you want to leave it Especially in this time there is no time for messing around, dont get caught into the trap of shaytaan and dajjal.

Besides this music does nothing, it plays with your emotions makes you feel happy :) makes you feel :( excited :hidban: it is a shaytaan that controls the way you feel. An the messages and words i mean write it down and then read it to yourself, what on earth is it saying, absolutely nothing beneficial. Its not saying 'put your rubbish in the bin, speak nice to people, remember Allah swt, hate shaytaan' no. It talks about nonsense, and if you do that then it'll make you realise how stupid music is.

Insha'Allah thats helped. May Allah swt help you all and give you all the strength to hate shaytaan and get rid of this music ameen
alhamdulilah my old computer is broken down which had an iTunes full of songs, now my new comp has no music to me.
I stopped listening to music in January or December, its not the easiest thing, but not that hard at the same time.

I still have my old CDs, I am not even tempted though too listen to em, don't want the hell-fire!

Also I hate music, even on the adverts, can't stand it now.
Although when I hear the bassline of song that I like from the old days, I get so tempted, but i stop myself because its blatant haram.

Re: Please stay away from the disease called music.

It takes some effort and will power, but it's definitely possible to stop listening to music altogether.

Those nervous about the idea may rest assured that there is no known disease linked to lack of exposure to music !

To those who're trying to leave music , we have a blessed month coming very soon for us to be able to get rid of all our bad habits.

                    Ramadan: The Music Free Month.

Our best chance of kicking the music habit comes in Ramadan every year. It is the time of year when every Muslim who has any trace of Iman in his or her heart, is naturally inclined toward doing good and staying away from evil. And it should be like that.

Did not the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, curse the Muslim who finds Ramadan but does not use it to seek forgiveness for his previous sins? If we cannot leave sins or vain activities during Ramadan, when can we? We not only have the strongest moral and religious reasons to do so, it is also easy because the regular activities of Ramadan leave little time to be wasted in listening to music.

Urge all the Muslims in your community to avoid listening to music for at least one month. And who knows, after one month many may decide to stay away from it because of the personal insights they got through the experience.

Of course, if you are convinced, do not wait until tomorrow . Start today.

Yes understand its difficult and hard to give up for some its like a drug and addiction HOWEVER there is nasheed which is an alternative and there are Non-Musical Nasheeds aswell , i'll post you some links at the bottom. Delete all your Mp3 and throw away your CD and tapes, its difficult but this is the first step..think of it as a pack of cigarettes or something and chuck em away

There are Islamic Alternatives aswell nasheeds and what not however the really annoying thing is that some of the "Muslim Singers" have resorted to Using Music in Nasheeds which to me is no different to the rest - infact i would call it even worse since they are disrespectign by using the word Allah and shahadah whilst using music - stay away from these

I've put a list below of Some Non Music nasheeds artists which are quite good

                      Labbayk (www.labbayknasheeds.com) www.nasheedchannel.com
                      Abdullah Rolle (www.abdullahrolle.com
                      Kamal uddin - www.kamaluddin.info )
                      Talib Habib (http://www.nuralhabib.com/)
                      No Beats Necessary ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6YabZ5WCpY)

Or listen to www.ummahradio.com we play nasheeds on there all Music free have a wide range of Selection

the best way to give up music is to go cold turkey. take a deep breath say bismiallah and throw all the cds and delete all of the music. your heart will feel lighter as soon as the music is all gone.

and if you must listen to something try listening to some lectures and quran or even go download some podcast that subjects interests you from itunes. there are tons of informative podcasts to download.

also try and take up a hobby like walking art etc.

Muslim nasheed singers have no vocal harmony, well not that I found one anyway. Trust me one of the hardest things for me was giving up music and flogging off all my audio equipment. I wasn't your average listener, I was a complete audiophile nut and for years had brands like Denon, AGK, etc. For me it was do it right or not do it at all. Islamic Nasheeds are just a stop gap, once you realise the power in Qur'an you will never want to listen to nasheeds, which in my opinion is just background noise.
