  • Muslim Careers Must Meet Islamic Identity

    Oct 07, 2003
    Source: 1924.org

Mohsin Khan, an RAF reservist, has lost his appeal against disciplinary action which was taken against him after he went absent without leave from his base, because he thought he would be sent to fight in Iraq. He said "he would rather go to jail, than kill my brothers".

When he was disciplined over the offence he had claimed that his religion would only allow him to fight in self-defence and that breaking the rules of the Quran would mean that he would go to hell. The court ruled however that he was not going to be sent to fight in Iraq, only to engage in duties based in the UK.

What this case does show is that the Muslim identity plays a central role to the choices Muslims make in life. Muslim's cannot simply enter into "careers" without considering their Muslim identity. Clearly, a career in the armed forces would jeopardise their Muslim identity, which demands they do not fight other Muslims. It would also mean that they would be supporting a colonialist and non-Muslim nation in terms of the oppression and injustice that it reeks upon the world.

However, Islam also has rules on economic issues, social issues and political issues also. Hence a career in law, whether judge, police or lawyer would contain many issues that would conflict with the Islamic identity. Careers in banking and insurance also have an effect, in terms of witnessing and trading in illegal contracts from the Islamic viewpoint. Careers that do not allow appropriate dress, for example for Muslim women, or careers that involve socialising and free mixing, for example sales and marketing, all pose a potential problem for the practising Muslim man and woman.

Hence Muslims embarking on career choices must think through the effects of their chosen career paths, in terms of their Islamic identity. They must remember that life, whether living in the Muslim world or Britain, has the same purpose for all Muslims. That is to remain obedient to the commands and prohibitions of Allah (SWT) and to maintain and excel in the Islamic identity.

pre-911, amerikkka made claim to only doing defensive wars. It is very dangerous for a muslim in a non-Muslim army. If you go to war with them, they suspect you as the enemy the whole time, and if something goes wrong..... guess who they blame.

mixing freely and engaging in riba, recognizing and participating in kufr laws and governments contrary to sunnah, supporting armies of kufr, etc. are very different things, mouse.

though mixing freely with non-mahram opposite sex can lead to haram, there is no shariah punishment for it this world, perhaps the next, Wallahu Alim. on the other hand, riba, supporting a kufr army at war with Muslims, participating or believing in kufr systems of government are all acts that have definite shariah punishments and hell fire as a distinct possibility for the participants.

i don't like how the article tries to shift gears by concentrating on 'identity' as opposed to the real ramifications of such contraventions of Islamic law by Muslims.

anyway, it makes a good point.

mouse, the restrictions that govern a Muslims life in and outside the home are whole heartedly followed and believed to be necessary and indispensable with regards to being constantly aware that the Creator is All-Aware. only the hypocrite, evil doer or polytheist would make himself so spiritually destitute as to waste such an effort as refusing to work for haram businesses on shariah bases. there is a great reward waiting in the next life or even in this life for the person who forgoes something for the sake of Allah AWJ, and strives to make their business dealings halal, and what a waste it would be to have such a corrupt niyyah towards refusing to working in haram businesses because of laziness instead.

        think about it...

        regards,

        abu najm

                      mr/miss/mrs rajii,

no one is saying exclude a sex from contributing in careers, but in islam the place of woman is different from that in th western world.. in the western world the woman is a sexual plaything, the western women are exploited and are brainwashed into believing its freedom for them, while the men ogle at them and have no respect for them

if you look at the young mens magazines of today, you will see that the centre page is of a naked woman!!!!! is this respect for the opposite sex,? the women of the west have been hoodwinked into believing so, and think that they are 'free'. An islamic woman has full rights to be educated and have a job. but preferably in sections where there wud be no free msixing of the sexes. in western world and nowadays in the east as well, there are innumerable cases of sexual harrassment of women by their male colleagues or their bosses.. its a problem even in the US if im not mistaken.. the islamic woman is a woman who is given much respect. i dont think child rearing anf taking care of the matters of the home is an inferior proefession.. bringing up children is one of the most important duties, the child needs its mother in its younger years and how the child is in the society depends on how he or she was brought up by his/her parents.

in america, there have been many cases where children from dysfunctional families bring guns to school and kill their school mates whom they dont like. maybe this has something to do with the lack of attention from their parents primarliy.

funny i dont feel exploited in the least. why dont you ask western women what they want. and ask muslim women what they want. the women in the street not just members of this forum. believe me i am no mans sexual play thing, i have the freedom to go where i wish ,how i wish, i can divorce my husband if he is cruel[not that he would be] i get no disrespect from the males i meet. i have a good life within and outside of the family. to be a muslim and to have to wear a covering just stop men eying me up. tells me its the men who have a problem, not my freedom, perhaps its time muslim men stopped this power trip and came into the real world and become , real men who can acept a women as an equal after all women are 50% or so of the worlds population.

I do not know where you live, but women are not sexual playthings in the western world, and they are also well respected by most. Yes, there are males who view women as sexual objects, but they are the exception not the rule.

I have had women friends, women bosses, I have worked with women in different projects, and I have attended classes with women; and in no way are they sexual playthings by me or by most men. Yes, I admire the female form just as most men, but I and most other men have a thing called self-control and we respect every woman. I respect them not for only being female, but also for being a human being who has the same rights, privileges, and freedoms as anyone else. Women are an important part of our western society, and they are much more than mothers and housewives, although they have this freedom to chose that lifestyle as well. Women are an integrated part of our society and they can choice how they want to live just like any person... male or female, just as they should be in any society in my opinion.

Also, when it comes to marriage and children, as a male I would be more than happy to stay at home and do house work, wash clothes, cook, raise the children, and various house hold work that has been traditionally called "woman's work", and let the woman work at at an outside job. It is the desire of the western world to go past these traditional roles that men and women have been traditionaly been placed in.
