  • Paying back haram debt

    Assalamualaikum everyone,

I know it's fard for us to pay back any outstanding debts, which I am more than happy to do. However, there is something that's really been bothering me for a long time. A few years back, when I was a non-practising ignorant student, I had a job which involved promotion and selling tickets for haram events (I won't go into detail). Cutting a long story short, I sold some tickets and had to leave the country all of a sudden due to an emergency and couldn't pass on the money to the boss. I didn't have a way of paying the money back afterwards and a couple years passed.

Alhamdulillah eventually, I managed to get my act together and Allah brought me back to him. Now I'm really scared because I want to wipe my slate clean but I have this money that I owe, but it was made through the wrong means and it would go towards the promotion of more unlawful acts.

Do I pay this money back or do I just ask for forgiveness? I really don't know what to do

    JazakAllah Khair

A debt is still a debt. I don't know what the Islamic position would be exactly, but since you were working for them, you were under an agreement to pay them what you owe. Personally, I would pay them back, but don't take my word for it. I would recommend you go ask a Scholar/Sheikh at a Masjid to be safe. There is one that visits this site but I forget his username.

By all means, fulfil your contract and return the money to whoever it is due. Who knows that by so doing you may change their hearts.
