    High context cultures

They take your words to mean more than they are...

Asians fall under high context while Westerners are low context

The latter take your word more at face value without reading too much into it

Explains why Asians read so much into what you say...

Do you mean South Asians? If so, which part? Do you mean Middle Easterners, since they're also Asian? Or East Asians? What about that part of Russia that's Asian? Or the Central Asian people as well?

You know, the first time I saw Asian on the forum I was shocked that everyone here assumed that they were Muslim when Asia is a huge continent filled with different groups of people. Plus, over in my side of the pond, when people think of Asians they think of East Asians.

What a funny world that we live in.

    I agree.

Desi culture is very high context.

At the same time I believe every culture has elements of this. Just different things.

You don't need specialists & studies ... you just need real-life experience in these cultures.

Asians tend to analyse and derive meanings from what has been said that you would never even think of. It is usually the source of the politics in these cultures.
British Asians can be a bit of both - you have those who are more shaped by the culture and those that have a more simplistic mindset - or 'low context'
This is interesting - this high and low context thing. In other words, I wish I had a more simplistic mindset... Guess this explains why I take offense pretty easily.

Words can kill and the environment I live in does practice this culture of politeness.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a "high context culture". Islam teaches us to be concise in our speech. The prophet pbuh was very precise in his wordings.

the Messenger of Allaah pbuh said: “I have been favoured over the other Prophets in six ways: I have been given the gift of concise speech; I have been supported with fear; booty has been made permissible for me; the earth has been made a means of purification and a place of prostration for me; I have been sent to all of mankind; and the (line of) Prophets ends with me.” Narrated by Muslim (523).

Speaking with Low context is for people with low intellectual capacity, which seems to be the predominant culture these days...

Because Asians have very politically correct (polite culture) where one is not allowed to express their inner most feelings. especially young people are not allowed to be rude to an elder or so NO. Everyone is aware of this and the elders have lived thru it. Of course at certain stage in life, you have paid your dues enough to say whatever you want & be the voice of reason. But we are aware that not everything gets spilled out right & one has to read between to line to truly understand what someone means. Is someone being polite and saying "no to biscuits" or do they truly not want some.

Western on the other hand have been raised at young age to not hold back. To say something when you see something & it is perfectly ok to be rude to an elder if they are wrong and perfectly fine to voice your opinion. Asian's are not raised that way.

but also realize you know Asian at a personal level. So your interaction with Asian will be more complex and have higher level of complexity than someone you meet in work setting. There is no reason for you to have double meaning with someone you are exchanging high/hellos

    salaams to all

its mostly women who do this. i know women in my family who do it too.

very difficult to get them to take someones words at face value- esp when it comes to other relatives...
they always think ppl are insinuating something else when they say anything.

theyre just too suspicious and insecure.

    and Allah ta'ala knows best
    jazakallah
