I feel sorry for people who only put meat on a barbeque- they don't know what they're missing. Yeah I know barbequed lamb, chicken and fish tastes nice but so does barbequed veg and it goes really well with the meat. Just brush some seasoned olive oil over big pieces of red onion, sweet peppers, parboiled halved new potatoes all of which I've tried myself and taste great. What I haven't tried but looks worth trying (also brushed in seasoned olive oil) are long slices of courgettes and aubergine, corn on the cob and sweet potatoes. I only once did a barbeque myself back in my student days and it turned out so great, I still reminisce about it. Even the weather was just right; an overcast, dry May day so it wasn't warm and sunny, which meant we weren't boiling or getting sunburn, but it wasn't raining or ruined by the weather either- just the right amount of mildness and funnily enough, when we completely finished eating, packed away our plates and went inside to have tea- the moment we got inside it started raining cats and dogs which meant we timed everything perfectly :D

As for what type of barbeque to buy, I think a charcoal one is what you buy for that authentic chargrilled flavour, but it takes a certain level of skill to get the temperature right and do it properly without giving anyone food poisoning. I think a gas grill is good for speed because it heats up relatively quickly, is probably more user friendly and I've heard it tastes good, but wont have that chargrilled flavour.
