Ramadhan & Eid ul-Fitr 1419AH (1998/9)


Ramadhan

The month of Ramadhan begins after the sighting of the lunar crescent on the previous evening.

The coloured bands on the maps below indicate areas of the world where the crescent is likely to be visible on the date indicated:

It is expected that the new moon will be visible from parts of North, Central and South America on the evening of 19th Dec 1998.
It is expected that the new moon will be visible from the rest of the world on the evening of 20th Dec 1998.
Note that the new moon will NOT be visible from anywhere on the evening of 18th Dec 1998.


Hence pending actual moon sighting, Ramadhan should begin in the Americas on 20th Dec 1998 and the rest of the world on 21st Dec 1998.



Eid ul-Fitr

Eid ul-Fitr occurs after the end of the month of Ramadhan. Eid is celebrated after the sighting of the new crescent on the previous evening.

It is expected that the new moon will be visible from North and South America, parts of Europe, Middle-East, Africa (except South Africa) and possibly parts of India/Pakistan on the evening of 18th Jan 1999.
It is expected that the new moon will be visible from the rest of the world on the evening of 19th Jan 1999.


Hence pending actual moon sighting, Eid ul-Fitr should be on 19th Jan 1999 for America, parts of Europe, Middle-East, Africa and possibly parts of Asia and 20th Jan 1999 for the rest of the world.
