The Meeting
The story starts with some Christian delegates from Najran who had arrived at the Great Mosque of The Messenger of God in Al-Madina, after the Noon Prayers. They were all richly clad in colourfull silks and decorated with gleaming jewels and ornaments, smelling of sweet perfums.
The Muslims looked amazed at the approaching delegation, for none of the Arabs ever had come to The Prophet so richly and so beautifully dressed before in such color with gleaming jewels and shiney gold ornaments about them. So much so was the clamour among the Muslims that Abu Bakir remarked to The Prophet(pbuh&hf)
"May my father and mother be a ransome for you, O Apostle of God, if you would only wear your rich apparel which the Byzantine Qaysar (Emperor) had presented to you as a gift, so that they would see you dreesed in it."
However The Holy Prophet(pbuh&hf) was not impressed. So when the Christians finally came before Prophet(pbuh&hf) in the Mosque, to bade their greetings with the usual salution of peace. The Holy Prophet returned not their greetings and but turned his face away.
Abu Bakr was visablly shooked and suprised! The thought of the Prophet(pbuh&hf) action was quite impolite and not becoming of an Arab! Abu Bakir thought. The silence in the Mosque was heavey and deadly quiet as the Najran Christian leaders were rebuffed and withdrew silently but visablly angry out of the Mosque.
They angrily went to look for Othman Ibin Affan and Abdulrahman Ibin Awf, who they knew well in Madina. They found them in an assembly of the Immigrants, and they so bitterly complained to them about how The Prophet(pbuh&hf) had treated them by totally ignoring their presence and refused to acknowledge even the Arab customerly greeting.
"Your Prophet wrote us a letter of invitation, and here we are, in answere to his call. We greeted him, but he did not return our greeting or even speak to us. What is your advise to us?"
Both Othman and Abdulrahman could not give any advise or suggestion to the Christains on to how to proceed. So they advised them to ask The Prophet's(pbuh&hf) cousin and son-in-law, Ali Ibin Abe Taleb(as).
So they turned to look around for Ali Ibin Abe Taleb (as) who was also seated in the Majlis, and asked for his advice.
"What is your advice, O Abul Hassan to these people?"
Ali Ibin Abe Taleb(as) looked at them and advised them to discard their rich silky colourfull dress and strip themselves of all of their gleaming jewlery and golden ornaments and then to go again and try to meet with The Prophet(pbuh&hf).
"My advice for you is to change from your colourfull rich silky attire to some simple dress of an Arab and to take off your rings and shiney jewerly and golden ornaments!"
The Christians looked about themselves and agreed and did as Ali Ibin Abe Taleb(as) had suggested and changed their clothes and donned simple Arabian dress. Leaving their excessive jewerly of golden ornatments and noisey trinklets in their boxes.
Then the Christians again proceeded to the Great Mosque and approached the seated Holy Prophet Mohammad Al-Mustafa(pbuh&hf) and greeted him. This time The Holy Prophet(pbuh&hf) looked up at all of them, and smiled and rose up and returned their greeting warmly and inviting them to sit down with him.
Abu Bakr was puzzled at the Prophet's(pbuh&hf) behaviour and later questioned The Holy Prophet(pbuh&hf) as to why he had first refused to greet the Christian delegation. But now only to greet them with warmth and respect now when early he had refused to even acknowledge them. The Prophet(pbuh&hf) smiled and replied.
"By Allah, when they came to me the first time. Ibleese was with them!"
