The scientific signs

What proof is there for the existence of Allah?

The scientific signs (ayah) of the Quran are a proof for the existence of Allah. They are furthermore a significant proof for the prophethood of Mohammed (peace be upon him). These signs describe discoveries that have recently been made (within this century/decade/ year) and are a gift of Allah to the Muslims who should attain knowledge of them. A detailed list will be given and regular courses can be provided in different subjects in order to understand, teach and propagate these signs.

Many people, even Muslims, will say there is none, one simply has to have blind faith. This does not show any certainty in their faith, so they do not or do not want to fulfil the criteria above. They are backward and we need to correct them under the guidance of Allah, unless they prove to us the true basis of their view. But there is hope since alongside with the age of trials, we are living in the Age of science.

Now it is indeed the case that Allah has left us with clear scientific signs in the Quran and with a proof of his existence as well as the Quran being his true word. He says:

53 Soon will We show them Our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth) and in their own souls until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?

The word Ayah/signs is of particular intensity and meaning. It is ambiguous indeed.
A sign is a landmark for guidance for the believer, a verse from the Quran for example. It can also be a proof for the existence of Allah by himself or indirectly manifested through a prophet or any another element of his creation. But the signs are everywhere for those who are wise enough to understand:

32. Say: Who hath forbidden the beautiful (gifts) of Allah which He hath produced for his servants and the things clean and pure (which He hath provided) for sustenance? Say: they are in the life of this world for those who believe (and) purely for them on the Day of Judgement. Thus do We explain the signs in detail for those who understand

5 It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty) and measured out stages for her: that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). The signs will be shown clearly by Allah in the universe and in our ownselves, everyone will start to believe eventually, but it will be too late for them (that is quoted above in S51: V43 and also in two following verses):

82. And when the Word is fulfilled against them (the unjust) We shall produce from the earth a beast to (face) them: he will speak to them for that mankind did not believe with assurance in our Signs

95 But there is a ban on any population which We have destroyed: that they shall not return.
96 Until the Gog and Magog (people) are let through (their barrier) and they swiftly swarm from every hill.
97. Then will the True Promise draw nigh (of fulfilment): then behold! the eyes of the Unbelievers will fixedly stare in horror: "Ah! woe to us! we were indeed heedless of this; nay we truly did wrong!"

Let us pray for guidance before that¼inshallah (Al-Fatiha").
I want to stress these signs are much more intensive than the ones generally known and they are also more precise than the ones we have quoted so far. They are highly scientific in the areas of physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, embryology etc. They are quranic passages written down shortly after they were revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) and are supported by scientific discoveries of recent times, this century, partly even this decade.

I want to give you a few shocking examples:

Example number one:

7 And the mountains as pegs? (Waljiba_la autada_)

The Arabic word "autada" literally means the peg for the tent. Mountains are a rocky structure that appears when continental plateau's or landmasses drift towards each other, swimming on the lava beneath them. One shifts below the other. In this process which takes millions of years, the lower mass is naturally pushed much deeper than the upper one is lifted up due to the earth's gravitation and due to the fraction and the lava. At the end of this process the average depth of the lower mass is 7-ten times deeper than the height of the upper one. This is particularly true for young mountain ranges like the Alps or the Himalayas. The mountains are like pegs for the earth in order to enable us to rest on it. Both formations grow together to a solid mass, the upper one exhibiting special minerals from the inner layers of the earth's crust, which do not occur elsewhere except in mountains (diamonds, iron, etc.):

27. Seest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky? With it We then bring out produce of various colours. And in the mountains are tracts white and red of various shades of colour and black intense in hue

10. He set on the (earth) Mountains standing firm high above it and bestowed blessings on the earth and measured therein all things to give them nourishment in due proportion in four Days in accordance with (the needs of) those who seek (sustenance).

Iron is essential for our breathing, it is the central Atom to the molecule haemoglobin, which is the pigment of our blood and carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be exhaled. It is only through mining in mountainous regions that we can win iron in sufficient amounts for mankind. Mountains are essential to our life on earth. This is linked to the following Ayah which I just want to quote here and I will explain it in detail later:

24. We sent aforetime our apostles with Clear Signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance (of Right and Wrong) that men may stand forth in justice; and We sent down Iron in which is (material for) mighty war as well as many benefits for mankind that Allah may test who it is that will help unseen Him and His apostles; for Allah is Full of Strength exalted in Might (and able to enforce His will)

But in fact it is known that without the mountains the earth's crust would glide much quicker on the lava beneath than it does now because of the earth's rotation around the sun and it's spinning around it's own axis. The mountains are like pegs for the earth in order to enable us to rest on it. Without them life would not have evolved on the earth at all! We know that without the mountains the earth would shake:

31. And We have set on the earth mountains standing firm lest it should shake with them and We have made therein broad highways (between mountains) for them to pass through: that they may receive guidance

And it will do so on the last day:

4 When the earth shall be shaken to its depths

And the prophet (peace be upon him) spoke about their creation accordingly:

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When Allah created the Earth it began to oscillate, so He created the mountains, ordered them onto it, and it became steady. The angels marvelled at the strength of the mountains and asked their Lord whether there was anything in His creation stronger than the mountains, to which He replied that iron was stronger. They asked if anything in His creation was stronger than iron, and He replied that fire was. They asked if anything in His creation was stronger than fire and He replied that water was. They asked if anything in His creation was stronger than water and He replied that wind was. They asked if anything in His creation was stronger than wind and He replied, "Yes, the son of Adam who gives sadaqah with his right hand which concealing it from his left."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.

There are many more passages that refer to mountains and related phenomenon and describe them precisely. The geological discoveries have only been made recently within the last few decades. Please read in any encyclopaedia or advanced geology book and find out yourself, how precise these and other verses from the Quran describe the modern discoveries. They can only be the true word of the very creator of the whole known and unknown universe who is sustaining, nourishing and inspecting it through all ages.

Example number two:

30. Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of Creation) before We clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

It is commonly known among serious scientists and particularly among astronomists that there was a Big Bang in the beginning of the universe. The evidence for that is that the universe is expanding with a steady (or some say decreasing, others say increasing) rate. That has been supported by the data collected by the Hubble-Telescope, Hubble was the very founder of that theory (see "The Birth of Time" by John Gribbin, Weidenfeld & Nicholson, London 1999). Before this Big Bang, all agree, matter must have been concentrated in a hugely dense and solid mass, the size of which nobody knows. They conjecture by estimating the density and size of the known universe. However, then there must have been a big explosion and shortly after that small particles, dust, smoke, was everywhere, they agree, because they have seen just that in interstellar space, in the farthest regions#of the universe:

10 Moreover He Comprehended in His design the sky and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: "Come ye together willingly or unwillingly." They said: "We do come (together) in willing obedience." 4474 4475 4476

Something else is extraordinary about S21: V30. Every living thing comes from water. Life evolved in water, all scientists agree. Plants conquered the landmasses first and left water and then animals followed. In fact man still carries around water, the life-soup, as biologists call it, in our blood and fibres. More than 80% of our body weight consists of water and it decreases with age and also during the day. The creation of man was more complex than that of animals; it is referred to several times in the Quran (from earth, dust, mud, clay, a clot of blood, a clot of flesh, sperm and water, more about that later):

Ayah 54 Yusuf Ali It is He Who has created man from water: then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage: for thy Lord has power (over all things).

We will talk about the precise embryological development in a separate course, it is a subject intensively covered. Scientists divide the evolution of the universe into three different stages. Firstly the physical evolution in which the formation of the atoms out of smaller particles took place in the gasmasses and plasma of the Supernovae (giant distant stars). Secondly the chemical evolution in which molecules formed out of these atoms (on planets, like O2/oxygen and H2O/water). The third stage was a biological one, during which these molecules formed the atmospheres of the planets and macromolecules (large molecules, DNA and proteins) occurred and therewith life and organisms were formed, or evolved, as they say. There is a significant relation to the timeframe that Allah sets in the Quran and the estimated age of the universe (14 Billion years), especially the relation between the formation of the earth and the universe are the same as estimated by the scientists. But there is an exact timeplan of creation in the Quran and it harmonises with the modern scientific point of view in a dramatic way. S:21, V30 however covers all these three stages in short, precise and beautiful words, understandable to both 6th century nomads as well as modern scientists. These words can only be the ones of the creator of the whole universe, known and unknown:

27. And if all the trees on earth were pens and the Ocean (were ink) with seven Oceans behind it to add to its (supply) yet would not the Words of Allah be exhausted (in the writing): for Allah is Exalted in power Full of Wisdom

109. Say: "If the ocean were ink (wherewith to write out) the words of my Lord sooner would the ocean be exhausted than would the words of my Lord even if we added another ocean like it for its aid."

This is particularly true because these scientific signs cover all areas of research and are abundant, as we will see.

Example number three:

61. Blessed is He Who made Constellations in the skies and placed therein a Lamp and a Moon giving light (Taba_rakal lazi ja'ala fis sama_i buru_jaw wa ja'ala fiha_ sira_jaw wa qamaram munira_)

I do not intend to speak in depth about the astronomical sign in the Quran since they are numberless. The sun and the moon however have direct significant influence on life on earth. The moon reflects the light of the sun and brightens up certain nights in different stages in the shadow of the earth. So it is not the light source, not the lamp, but a light. There is a distinction in the above verse (ayah). Apart from that both bodies will not continue their course; both, sun and moon will come to an end (in millions of years) because our whole solar system is running towards the so-called "Dog-System":

2. Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; is firmly established on the throne (of authority); He has subjected the sun and the moon (to His law)! Each one runs (its course) for a term appointed. He doth regulate affairs explaining the Signs in detail that ye may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord.

37 And a Sign for them is the Night: We withdraw therefrom the Day and behold they are plunged in darkness; 3982
38 And the Sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him) the exalted in Might the All-knowing. 3983
39 And the Moon We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of date-stalk. 3984 3985
40. It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon nor can the Night outstrip the Day: each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).

In this last series of verses (ayah) we can see that there is a discrete role that these bodies play, the measurement of time. We would never have been able to measure or even realise time without them:

4. It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty) and measured out stages for her: that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain his Signs in detail for those who understand

96. He it is that cleaveth the daybreak (from the dark): He makes the night for rest and tranquillity and the sun and moon for the reckoning (of time): such is the judgement and ordering of (Him) the Exalted in Power the Omniscient.

Let me briefly relate to the phenomena of the positioning of sun and moon and eclipses. The earth turns around the sun and it's own axis (actually the sun, moon and mountains stabilise its axis") and the moon turns around the earth. When the earth comes in between the sun and the moon, there is a lunar eclipse (the moon turns dark in the shadow of the earth in the middle of the day). Whenever the moon comes in between sun and earth, there is a solar eclipse (the sun turns dark in the coverage of the moon and its corona can be seen as a circle around it). These are very impressive phenomena and have left their footprint in the course of history. There is a solar eclipse due in August 1999.

There is an article in a recent issue of the "New Scientist, 19th June 199, No2191, page 18" stating that intelligent life on earth would not have been possible without the exact distancing of sun and moon from the earth so that one can exactly cover the other in eclipses. Even astronomists are puzzled and it cannot be coincidence that both bodies appear exactly the same size although they are very different. The sun is exactly 400 times bigger and 400 times farther away from the earth than the moon. Eclipses, both solar and lunar have only been possible for 150 million years and will only be possible for another 150 Million years from now. The first date is approximately the time when mammals started evolving, according to biological measurement. We are living on the only planet in the solar system from where a solar eclipse is visible at all. A respected astronomist says, "The timescale is very similar to that of the appearance of intelligent life. It is therefore not such a big coincidence that we are around at the time when it is possible to see total eclipses." Even non-Muslims consider solar eclipses an important sign. The seal of the prophets Mohammed (peace be upon him) used to pray during them:

37. Among His Signs are the Night and the Day and the sun and moon. Adore not the Sun and the Moon but adore Allah Who created them if it is Him ye wish to serve.

In the lifetime of Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) the sun eclipsed, so he led the people in prayer, and stood up and performed a long Qiyam, then bowed for a long while. He stood up again and performed a long Qiyam but this time the period of standing was shorter than the first. He bowed again for a long time but shorter than the first one, then he prostrated and prolonged the prostration. He did the same in the second Raka as he did in the first and then finished the prayer; by then the sun (eclipse) had cleared. He delivered the Khutba (sermon) and after praising and glorifying Allah he said, "The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse on the death or life of anyone. So when you see the eclipse, remember Allah and say Takbir, pray and give Sadaqa." The Prophet then said, "O followers of Muhammad! By Allah! There is none who has more ghaira (self-respect) than Allah as He has forbidden that His slaves, male or female commit adultery (illegal sexual intercourse). O followers of Muhammad! By Allah! If you knew that which I know you would laugh little and weep much.

One of the many complex features of the last day will be an eclipse-like happening:

8 And the moon is buried in darkness. 5816

All these verses (ayah) are mentioned repeatedly and often in different circumstances and the modern scientific discoveries are very well placed within elypses, rhythm and grammar so that interpreters from different disciplines in former times used to feel encouraged to positively check the correctness and therewith made genius inventions and discoveries (part of the course). There are many beautiful verses without scientific signs that describe nature, and they have lead to the pioneering work from Muslim Doctors, Zoologists, Botanists, Chemists, Engineers, and Sea travellers.

Definitely there are still people who doubt the truth about the Quran and Allah's signs. They come up with arguments such as, "the Arabs were very skilled and they found out about such thing", or, "Mohammed was very intelligent, he discovered these things". Well, there is still a challenge to create a Surah! But Mohammed was an illiterate!

These arguments could be accepted, if there were a few signs, like two or three by chance. Then one could say, okay, that is a coincidence. But there are about hundred signs that are of similar importance and value as the ones listed and explained above. Surely there meaning can change through time since the knowledge available to mankind changes as technology progresses. The scientific signs are not the only proof for Allah, they are in this age of science the most striking one though.

But some people insist on their spiritual deafness combined with emotional blindness and intellectual dumbness. So let them be proud of their veil that Allah has punished them with. They will probably carry it into their graves and be in a state of eternal torture (auzobillah):

35. Therefore patiently persevere as did (all) apostles of inflexible purpose; and be in no haste about the (Unbelievers). On the Day that they see the (Punishment) promised them (it will be) as if they had not tarried more than an hour in a single day. (Thine but) to proclaim the Message: but shall any be destroyed except those who transgress?

Others might say, I seek refuge with Allah (nauzobillah), that the Quran has been "faked". Well, I can only say, I used to read it when I was a child and I own copies that are more than 50 year old. That was before the Big-Bang theory was established.

There are so-called "Orientalists" who want to prove that the Quran might have been changed in the first hundred years of its existence as a written book.

There are manuscripts that are 1000 years of age scattered all across the world and many are in the possession of European and American museums as well. But has each word of the Quran stayed in the same position since the moment of "revelation"? Or were the scientific verses added later on, after the discoveries had been made that it is said to refer to?

The fact that the Quran in its present form is more than thousand years old and hasn't changed since then is apparently undisputed even among very critical non-Muslim historians. Archaeologists, experts of Oriental Studies and scholars of other disciplines seem to agree to that (see The Atlantic Monthly; January 1999; What is the Koran? Volume 283, No1; pages 43-56):

9 We have without doubt sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it

Furthermore, there are very old manuscripts from the early Middle Ages (800 AD) exhibited in the British Museum and have been in British possession for centuries (The Quran, M.Lings and Y.H.Safadi, London, 1976). One copy in the Egyptian National Museum written on gazelle skin has been dated 688 AD, 58 year after Mohammed and all these old findings are still the same versions as the ones that are being currently distributed among Muslims. It is nothing unusual since some Bible-manuscripts are older than that and the text is unchanged.

Nauzobillah, but even if the Quran was not that old, the people at those later times still didn't know how the embryo develops in microscopic precision or how the mountains are structured. It is the unbeliever's disability to accept Islam as the true original religion of Adam, Noah, Abraham, later, David, Jakob, Salomon, Jesus and finally the seal of the prophets Mohammed (peace be upon him). This makes them arrogant and ignorant, being the victims of Satan.

And the naïve ones among the esoteric pantheists, I can only ask them, if all religions are the same and from the same "God", which one is the last one among them? And why did God reveal another book to sum all the other ones up? And if only Islam is and aggressive religion then why did Jesus fight back the Romans, or David the Philisters or Goliath and what about the crusades, the inquisition, imperialism? Who has caused more mischief? The Muslims are not always on the right way, but only, if they do not practice Islam, especially, if they make war against each other or innocent people who haven't attacked them:

227. Except those who believe work righteousness engage much in the remembrance of Allah and defend themselves only after they are unjustly attacked.

So let's do exactly what is in the above verse (ayah) (S64: V35), proclaim. It is a Sunnah to communicate, announce, invite, exchange, etc. If we don't do that properly, Allah has no reason to punish the nonbelievers, if they were not warned.

1 Those who reject (Truth) among the People of the Book and among the Polytheists were not going to depart (from their ways) until there should come to them Clear Evidence
2 An apostle from Allah rehearsing scriptures kept pure and holy:
3 Wherein are laws (or decrees) right and straight.
4 Nor did the people of the Book make schisms until after there came to them Clear Evidence.
5 And they have been commanded no more than this: to worship Allah offering Him sincere devotion being True (in faith); to establish regular Prayer; and to practice regular Charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight
6 .Those who reject (Truth) among the People of the Book and among the Polytheists will be in hellfire to dwell therein (for aye). They are the worst of creatures

73 (With the result) that Allah has to punish the Hypocrites men and women and the Unbelievers men and women and Allah turns in Mercy to the Believers men and women: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.

The clear evidence is here, mankind has scientific knowledge that we can acquire, we can read and rehearse the scientific signs in the Quran and use the media to promote them. But in order to be able to do that we first have to implement the Quranic laws upon ourselves, otherwise we would be the ones to be warned:

226 And that they say what they practice not?

The scientific sign, they can only convince people with knowledge and sense.
There are hundreds of examples like these few listed above and even the slightest doubt must become certainty, so much that there is a scientific significance of this proof. We will mention and explain many signs in the weeks to come, inshallah.
