    Getting away with murder?

There've been widespread reports recently - http://www.qatarscoop.com/2017/08/19...tes-execution/ for example - of a man in Saudi Arabia pardoning his son's murderer so that the murderer isn't executed. It isn't clear from reports whether the killer will serve a sentence of imprisonment or be released. Looking around for more information I came across this example - https://callingchristians.com/2012/1...sons-murderer/ - where a mother rejected millions of riyals in compensation, but pardoned her son's murderer anyway. Again, it isn't clear whether the murderer was released or merely escaped death. This isn't just something that happens in Saudi Arabia. I've come across reports of similar events in Abu Dhabi and Iran.

I've also come across more reports of "bloodmoney" being offered as compensation for murder as well as the second instance here. Again, how often does this happen and what is the compensation? The most infamous example was that of P.C. Yvonne Fletcher, where Colonel Gaddaffi offered £250,000 in compensation for her death. Was this the standard rate for a life, or would it vary according to who was killed, or was it Gaddaffi's own random valuation? Does the a mount vary depending on the wealth or poverty of killer or victim?

There's also the question of what happens in other circumstances. Here it was family members of the victims who determined whether the murderer lived or died, What would be the case with an orphan, say? Would their murderer be automatically spared because the effect on others was less, or would they be automatically killed because the victim had no family to forgive the killer?

What about other crimes? Would an adulterer be spared because their spouse said they forgave them? What about the other person involved, especially if they aren't married? What if neither is married? Is this a case where forgiveness is impossible because no-one is qualified to forgive?

http://legacy.quran.com/2/178, http://legacy.quran.com/4/92 blood money only works for murder
As for killing an orphan, idk, I can't find anything about it.

Can diyah be accepted in the case of deliberate killing? Can the killer be set free?.

Ibn Al Qayyim may Allah have mercy on him said: ("
The heart on its journey towards Allah the Exalted is like that of a bird. Love is its head, and fear and hope are its two wings. When the head is healthy, then the two wings will fly well. When the head is cut off, the bird will die. When either of two wings is damaged, the bird becomes vulnerable to every hunter and predator..”

    Re: Getting away with murder?

Thank you both. You've settled the validity of the custom, but left me even more puzzled about its justification.
    I'll look further.
