The status of discussions on ummah

What do you think about the state of discussions on ummah?

While looking at threads, it seems like the same thing always happens when there's some sort of discussion of sorts. Some says something, someone immediately disagrees, or misunderstands, and lack of adab ends up getting displayed

I dunno about you guys, but it does make me wary of entering some threads or partaking in some threads, since it almost feels like there's no point.

I think we have a problem where we don't really listen to one another, nor do we have patience to hear a different view from our own. Instead of accepting different views or even helping one another, we'd rather argue, defame, and attack each other.

This has always been a problem here, but it seems to be getting worse and worse lately. (I do understand that this could also be due to the fact that I've been here too long and stuff)

Anywhootieandtheblowfish, what sort of things can be done to combat this?

Or do you think this is even a problem to begin with?

I thought people have been more laid back lately.

The issue is simple it's the same users and the same mods, mulling over the same benign nonsense (99% of the threads anyway). If we accept this place is really for people who are not really after anything more than staying on the surface then this place is perfect.

If however, you think this place offers something else then I think your clientele is a hindrance.

That is ummah in a nutshell

Re: The status of discussions on ummah

I started using this site 8 months ago actively.

From what it was then , to what it is now , I must say, I enjoy it much better. I appreciate the effort of brother Abu Abdullaah and Hajar in cleaning and organizing the forum.

As for the qualities of discussions.. I believe the quality has gotten a little better but it maybe just me and how I am using the site personally.

I have noticed a decrease in general activity though. I apologise if this comes off rude but I believe it may be due to Abu Abdullaah and Hajar's cleaning which caused some people to not like the restrictions. I have no intent to backbite anyone , but perhaps they came to this site for a specific reason , and now that reason is inaccessible and hence , they no longer use the site.

    Thats my take.

It's Ramadaan and people are engaged and also busy + lack of interesting discussions on the forum.

    Wa aleikum salam

I think there is a huge amount of circular discussion and a lack of new, interesting and beneficial discussion.

I'm not suggesting that my threads would be any of the above but my reluctance to start discussions is because I've seen where they can develop in an unhealthy way and I feel guilty that I caused that, even though unintentionally.

I appreciate Pippins threads. They are thought provoking and often come from a place of self reflection or general Ummah improvement.

Yeah that makes sense too bro. That is definitely true.
But also the site was getting less busy from what I noticed but it could be because ramadan was approaching and people were avoiding socialising and the likes.

Glad to have this site, thank you guys , I have no other muslims to talk to.

If I offended any of you, I apologise.

And also I apologise in advance for any future derogatory and mischevuous behaviour. Ramadan is commencing and shayton is coming back

I think they come from a place similar to "hug a tree" or "hug a hoodie". It has its place but too much of it becomes a bit yucky. Sometimes you need self reflection with time to develop it before being asked to taste something else.

    Assalamu alaykom

To be honest, when speaking to other people (and I am not perfect myself) I have noticed that people are at times, unwilling to change their views. I think it comes down to a level of humbleness that we as Muslims should have.

I am not infallible, my views on life are not infallible, my perception on Islam is also not infallible. There is a possibility that I am wrong in the things I say.

To anyone reading this, could you say the same about yourself? I am not asking if Islam is in question. Islam is infallible. But our personal opinions may be wrong. Your shaykh can be wrong, your parents can be wrong.

The Qur'an is the book for the truth seeker. Allah admonishes the ones who follow their forefathers i.e the one who blindly follows 'status quo'.

When the truth is presented to you, you should submit. Or at least let it penetrate and do further research and if it's true, be man enough to accept it. Perhaps there is a difference of opinion which is acceptable..

We are allowed to be wrong. Most certainly, we can not all be right... A call to humbleness, beginning with myself.

    @Pippin1376

What do you think can be done to combat your OP?

There can only be one truth, right?

I can see your point. There are posters who make too many yucky posts but I Alhamdulillah, i don't see Pippin's posts as being in that category.

why not install some AI mods which see which specific text and words are being used and threads and users get locked instantly.

but wait , you'd need to pay someone to make that work.

now who could it be .......

What do you think can be done to combat your OP?
I'm not sure. My main issue has always been adab. If we can't talk to each other without putting someone down or insulting one another, then that is a problem. Like that one thread on hoors, someone said they felt uncomfortable about it due to being female and feeling like they get nothing in Jannah and instead of explaining things in a proper way, she was attacked and said she didn't want to come on the forum again.

    That I can't stand.

The problem probably lies with the OP.

I just don't like when people slander each other in their faces. I know I am guilty of losing my patience at one time but I'm pretty tolerant and always stay rational.

Ummah has really changed over the years.

Changed in a good way or bad?

If it's a good - what do you think helps make the forum great in terms of discussions?

If it's bad - what do you think we can do to make things better?

Changed in a bad way I suppose. I hate feeling negative but can't shy away from the truth.

I think you've done a good job by taking the time to pinpoint the problem. I think proper procedure and rules should be in place for people who are directly slandering one another. People calling another people stuff like 'kafir', 'liar', 'murtad' should be dealt with strictness.

I mean I used to have debates all the times back then and never ever had somebody called me ignorant or liar. Obviously the differences are there but we debated in a healthier way, refuting each other. Now a days when users slander each other openly, it throws a negative vibe and obviously patience can't last longer.

I also feel that some mods sit at the back and let the thread go and watch things turn ugly then take their time to close it (all at the same time while closing and monitoring other threads). That's how I feel.

Quit trolling. That's impossible if you mean refuted each other in the same discussion because only one side can be refuted in one discussion.
