The Dreaded Big Block - What say you? What you say? Say you What, etc etc..

    Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah.

I'm guessing the lockability of this thread is quite high. Regardless...

I've noticed lately, possibly as the mind is growing feebler (? ) and lazier with age, that I have a tendency to sometimes skip posts even though I know I would like to read them.

    Are you the same?

I accidentally simultaneously voted for paragraphs being good AND bad.

    -_-

Generally though I don't read long posts that have no paragraphs.

Re: The Dreaded Big Block - What say you? What you say? Say you What, etc etc..

I skip posts all the time except for a select few members whose posts I know are always great and only happen to read other members' posts when they have been quoted by those select few members just earlier alluded to. I don't entirely skip all the time though, for example I skim read if it's a thread of interest or if I'm on the hunt to refute.

But generally speaking, Poster I always read.

You didn't simultaneously vote for both though, because you would have had to vote for one, then the other. So you accidentally voted for two contradictory options in the poll successively, though not simultaneously.

    Refuted.

Also just to warn you, Abu 'Abdullaah is now going to pick you a part for the inconsistency of your votes.

I don't like writing too much. Mostly though, my paragraphs are just a single sentence.

I do like paragraphs, they structure the post, and make it easier to read.

I hate big walls of text, especially when the poster has poor grammar or spelling. (This is not directed toward anyone in particular, by the way).

At the very least, space out your sentences.

The good things about walls of text is that it allows you to skip the posts more conveniently.

It's nice to read paras if the things ppl say make sense. Even if it's a long read. We have some good writers here on UF anyways.

Re: The Dreaded Big Block - What say you? What you say? Say you What, etc etc..

    Wa aleikum salam wa rahmatulah,

I don't mind long posts at all, as long as they're broken up a little and relatively easy to follow. I do skip posts, usually if I know the poster doesn't have anything much to post or they're posting words I don't want to read.

I do read long chunks of text with poor grammar and punctuation if the poster is new or in the anon section, as they might just need assistance and a little more patience. I always think, imagine if that was me trying to ask for something in an unfamiliar language, how upset I'd be if no one replied.

I do skip whole threads though.

I love the comparative religion section but I can't read any as I find myself sometimes defending the Christian position in my thoughts. It's still early days for me and I need to simply emerse myself in Islam and stay away from unhelpful constructs.

On the poll, I added the "we" even though it wasn't there! How funny! When I read the edit, I had to go back and check that it wasn't there.

I don't understand people saying things are difficult on their phone, how so? I'm always on my phone when I log on, I don't have anything other.

Others post 'excuse the typos as I posted from my phone' and I'm thinking, well how is it more difficult?

The odd typo can be excused but the phone excuse is interesting. A phones signifies speed and urgency and people feel they have to get their message across as quickly as possible. Plus social media apps (Whatsapp, fb, etc) where everyone is in permanent chat mode means the txt spk format spills over into forums.

There are a few 'essays' that I will read properly because it's interesting.
with some users I always read and with others (and this is the majority) i skim through and get the main points.

The bad thing this is becoming a habit, i'm starting to skim through things whenever I read anything because it saves me time and I don't have the patience anymore to sit and read word for word unless it's something really important.

I understand skimming as I do it with a lot of members but my position is that if you're going to either give a person advice, or enter into a debate, i.e. quote a person and oppose their post, then the least you can do is read their post properly, take a few minutes to consider it, before responding. This way there is no misunderstanding, you do not give the wrong advice, and you do not start to 'debate' a person unnecessarily or whatever.

But otherwise skimming is necessary as a lot of the posts aren't worth the time (including my own, especially my own, I admit).

it's much easier using a laptop or PC, to construct a proper post/thread with all the cutting, pasting, editing etc,

can be done on the phone, but it's quicker and easier using a PC.

The same way that I often skip very short posts that aren't well thought out.. an example is when someone writes a long OP or a short OP but about a complex situation, where they need advice/support, and people just give a word or two, or a short sentence.. some generic/general advice, that everyone else has given on those threads.. Those posts annoy me much more than long posts that are often long because they are well thought out, and because that person actually wants to help, and cares about posting something that will actually be useful to the original poster..lol. I mean why else would someone write a long post, that takes up their own time? Unless they were actually trying to help/explain something properly.. lol. Whereas some short repetitive posts sometimes really don't add much of a contribution value to a thread. Time to battle back, because this thread seems extremely one sided, and I have realised a lot of users on UF seem to have a problem with posts that are long..

    #saynotoshortposts

ultimately no one should feel as though they have to change how they post (which is often a reflection on the person themselves), simply because users aren't happy with it, for an arbitrary reason.. ppl are never gonna be pleased with everything.. be who you are, post how you want, as long as it's not unislamic or offensive (of course), don't change to please people, and lose yourself in the process... lol a little deep/extreme, but yeah
