When you reverted did you change your name?

    :

    Question in title.

I haven't and I don't plan on changing it. I like my name, and well that's basically the only reason. I don't suit any of the Islamic names anyways, can't even pronounce most of them correctly.

Sisters at the masjid wanted to give me a new name and I told them I was keeping my name. They just said it was what they'd call me, that I didn't need to change it. I just didn't get why they didn't want to call me by my name.

When I took shahadah the iman called me muhamed eesa
But people mainly still call me by my given name so not much has changed
It may not be easy, you may not understand it, but you need to have the Imaan to trust Allah when life doesn't make sense.

Re: When you reverted did you change your name?

I remember a muslim brother saying when he was a kid he wanted to convert to Islam, but the brother he was talking to said he had to change his name. He got scared of what his parents might say and do so he decided not to convert. He did end up converting later on in life Alhamdulillah.

I think people make the name change too much of a big deal and it puts off some people. I don't see why people have to change their name unless their name means something haraam.

I'm not a convert but my parents are, and yes they did get new names.

I found a suitable Muslim name for myself years after I converted but I haven't changed my name officially (maybe some day in shaa Allaah).
Almost no one calls me by my Muslim name, sisters prefer to call me my by my "real" name.

Did he talk to you at all about the name or did he just come up with it when he met you?

None of the sisters knew what to call me lol, so they kept calling me by my real name of course, but they said they wanted to give me a new name. Made me a lil nervous.

Yeah my name means nothing haram so I don't see any point in changing it. My mom and dad would be sad if I changed my name like that too, and I wouldn't wanna hurt their feelings.

I'm glad that man ended up converting.

Do ypu prefer they call you by your birth name of by your Muslim name? I suppose since you wanna change it you'd prefer they call you by your Muslim name. If that's what you want I hope they start calling you by your Muslim name, they may just be do used to calling you by your birth name but maybe once you change it officially they'll stop.

I reverted just today. I'm unsure if I will change my name. I think changing your name means you're a different person. I'm the same person as I always was, just happier. So maybe I'll keep mine

I don't know. I'm not used to be called by my Muslim name so it feels weird when someone calls me by it. But sometimes I think it would be nice to be called by "Muslim name" and not "kafir name". I don't know.. lol

Wow, congratulations!! How did it go, did you say it alone, to someone on the forum, or did you say it at a masjid? Please share! . I love revert stories lol

    That's how I feel too.

Yeah, I'd forget and if someone was talking to me or calling me by that name I might not realize they're talking to me lol. I think the weirdness will subside though, maybe just ask the sisters you know to call you by your Muslim name instead, that way when you change it permanently it won't feel as strange.

It was good. I said it with my friend and her father as witnesses. There both Muslims. I thought it would make me happy but it made me emotional first. I wasn't expecting that. I cried first

Yes Sara is a good name ma'shaa'ALLAH because the wife of Prophet Ibraheem was named Sara.

Why? The name of Prophet Ibrahim's wife is spelled Sara/Sarah (or Saara). No need to change the spelling, in shaa Allaah.

I double checked and you're right it's سارة (Sarah) and not زهرة (Sahra), that's a different name.

Re: When you reverted did you change your name?

Better to give oneself a muslim name. One should shed the name associated with kaafirs

If the name has good meaning one can keep it but this is a conscientious thing. It's like converting really. One leaves behind their kaafir life including the name

But it's not a must! If the name isn't Christian or Jewish or something that's associated with a particular religion, then it's perfectly fine to keep it.
Not all names have to be Arabic in order to be good. Plus I know a few sisters who've kept their names, and still managed to change their lifestyles.

I understand sister but I read Islamic Scholar said its better to change it and my 'encouragement' to change is based on fitrah feeling

I think Abu Huraira because his original name meant something bad. I remember one of the Prophet's wives also changed her name to Zainab

Not all of them did though.

I wanted to but I did not end up doing so.
It was narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "O people, fear Allah and be moderate in seeking a living, for no soul will die until it has received all its provision, even if it is slow in coming. So fear Allah and be moderate in seeking provision; take that which is permissible and leave that which is forbidden. " Sunan Ibn Majah

I did not change my name.

I did make sure to name my child a Muslim name.

I got a Kunyah automatically upon the birth of my child.

I prefer for fellow Muslims to refer to me by my Kunyah.

I hate it when people change their names, especially to names like Ahmed or Mohammed. Can't George or Jane be a Muslim? I'm not gonna change my name, that's for sure.

People name that because those are names of Prophet(S). And you can fit it into your culture if you want, for example, Turks use Mehmet instead of Mohammad and Chinese use Ma.

It's about identifying as a Muslim not only to yourself but outwardly to the world. That's one reason to choose to change your name as a convert.

George, Harry and Molly can all be Muslims of course but you wouldn't know if they were Muslims by that name.

For me, people who see me now know that I'm Muslim instantly. I want everyone to know that if they only see me on a paper or screen list.

Your written name to the majority will mean one thing...that your foreign. They won't know it's a Muslim name.

If by "they" you mean non Muslims then who cares?

Other Muslims would know. Immediately they know for sure that we are brothers and sisters. There are so many Muslims who don't identify as such, you can't avoid a name. You know that even if they are far from practising, you can encourage and remind them.

For converts I've come to believe it's imperative to change your name to something overtly Islamic.

I guess...I'm just not in written comms with Muslims where they might not be sure I'm Muslim or not.

But changing your name is a positive move.

Oh, come on, you got yourself banned AGAIN?

I didn't mean to say that there's something wrong with Ahmed or Mohammed, there isn't, but it's just so cliché. It's as if George or Jane can't be Muslim.

I get what you're saying, but I don't want people to think that only Ahmeds and Mohammeds can be Muslim, but that others can be too.

I never changed mine and do not plan to. It’s a good name, and I want to keep my identity.
