Shut Down the Marriage Forum during Ramadan

    Assalamalaikum,

I am requesting for the Marriage Forum to be shut down during Ramadan. The section has always been of a very low standard in terms of discussions and quality, but has recently fallen to new depths.

Ideally I would like the shutdown to start now, but in any case it should be out of action during Ramadan. This will benefit everyone - not just people like myself who really dont want to be reading some of the ridiculous things on there, but also for the benefit of those members who seem to live in the Marriage Section, asking the same question for the 400th time.

It will help them to protect themselves and their time during the precious moments of Ramadan.

Surely by now, everyone should have answers to the following topics:

    - Is attraction important?
    - Would you marry a fornicator?
    - Where can I find a revert to marry?
    - Why is life unfair to unattractve people?
    - How would you deal with a gold digger?

If you dont know by the 400th time of asking, then there is a problem.

Not only that, but there seems to be an increased lack of hayaa on the section. We've recently had threads where men and women have been openly and frankly discussing matters of a sexual nature - and if you advise them, you'll be told that there is "no shyness in the deen"

So you would happily sit around a coffee table "in real life" with members of the opposite gender and ask those intimate questions which have been doing the rounds recently?

Enough is enough - its time to shut down the Marriage Section during Ramadan.

Please vote now in the Poll above so I can lobby the moderators

    Jazakallah khair.

Your threads are fine Sister, so I doubt it was a silly one (though I haven't read it)

The whole section just needs a purge and a fresh beginning - and Ramadan is the best time for it.

No, I don't believe it should be. I never venture into that section, and if you don't find it to be a very useful forum to you then you would do well to avoid it. But, I imagine a lot of people on the forum derive some benefit from the forum and it would be punishing them just to satisfy a handful of people who aren't forced to browse through that part of the site.

I think what we need is a"thread closing" button on each thread. If enough members click it, the thread closes by itself. This should put a stop to some threads. If admins are worried about misuse, it could require one click from a mod to close a thread. So if any number of members click it, but no mod has clicked it, the thread doesn't close. However, if just the mod clicks it or the required number of members haven't clicked the button, then it doesn't close.

That sounds like a very good suggestion.

These are type of ideas we need from users to make gradual improvements and additions to the Forum for everyones benefit.

Re: Shut Down the Marriage Forum during Ramadan

I personally don't think shutting down the whole section would be a good idea.

Yes there might be some people or topics that shouldnt be discussed so openly but many people use it to seek sincere advice for real problems in their lives. And many other people are able to relate and offer their own knowledge and experience. I can only give you my own example where advice from certain individuals has been extremely beneficial for my own healing.

Perhaps a better idea would be a higher level of moderation in that section? Maybe allow all users some basic form of moderation as another poster mentioned above. A like or dislike button and if it reaches a certain number of dislikes then it can be hidden and moved to a special 'review' area where a mod will decide if it should remain open or closed.

Or if the section really bothers specific users then they could have the ability to hide it from view, i think that's quite a good and easy win!
God has created Angels with reason but having no desires; animals with desires but no reason and man with both reason and desires. Therefore, if one’s reason is stronger than his desires, he is like an Angel,
while if his desires are stronger than his reason, he is like an animal.

Re: Shut Down the Marriage Forum during Ramadan

Just like the the brother above^ said, there is no need to shut the whole thing down. Just increase moderation.

Since I doubt the admins would add any new settings/features, we should find a feasible route.

Perhaps, start a committee like that 'Troll Hunter' one, where all of us can report a Thread/Post/User together for action to be taken.

I remember our Prophet said something like "If you are shameless, do whatever you like", so those brothers and sisters who comments shamelessly must be infracted and so on.

Well how about a compromise the section stays opens as read only ..meaning noone can reply or start a new thread. That way information is still available and the maybe make the sticky thread about where to go for marriage advice more prominent.

if you dislike marriage section or fear the fitna, then avoid it at all cost, whether it's opened or closed, in ramadhan or not. simples

i personally never or extremely rarely visit the section again. no need to hear negativity about gender war, polygamy, cheating, racism, or would you marry blah blah polemics.

And all the heavens go their way.... And only change is here to stay...

In the marriage section there may be many genuine questions but many reckless replies which can go into pages and pages, that is not needed. There are also alot of hypothetical questions people ask just for the sake of passing time, it seems, and many of these kind of threads and replies are immodest.

Jazakallah for all your replies so far, and your votes.

I am looking for 30 YES Votes so I can then lobby the Moderators. That would be a healthy number to back up my argument with.

So if you are in favour of a shutdown during Ramadan but haven't yet voted - please do so now.

    Jazakallah khair

Note: I am not against people seeking genuine, sincere advice to their marriage problems. Perhaps those people can be redirected to the Counselling Section instead

Re: Shut Down the Marriage Forum during Ramadan

Well yes ideally it should be, but you all KNOW that peeps will just spew it onto the lounge.

And while I don't like all the fightiing in the ISIS thread, during Ramadan there will likely be important news regarding the group. It's just my feeling, but if it's closed, others threads will just pop up.

You are not here just to fill space or to be a background character in someone else's movie. Consider this: nothing would be the same if you did not exist. Every place you have ever been and everyone you have ever spoken to would be different without you. We are all connected, and we are all affected by the decisions and even the existence of those around us.

there should have been a third option- I don't care

hormonal brothers and sisters are going to post in other forums and behave the way they wanna behave whether marriage forum stays open or not, you think ramadan's gonna stop them? okay maybe when they're fasting but when they're not it's the 'would you...?' mode

more than temporary shutting down the marriage forum, these posters should be educated and that's kind of sad because they should know better but whatever

Threads in the marriage section are like the most entertaining part of this forum sadly, that's why it needs to go.
