    Arabic Whatsapp Group (for Brothers)

    السلام عليكم
I was thinking about about making a new Arabic Watsapp group
In it we can help eachother learn Arabic by conversing (In Arabic) and discussing things we need to learn and methods of learning

Edit: We have created the group, if anybody wants to join just let me know

KINDLY do not post your contact info in this thread, either rep or PM the thread starter

sounds like a beneficial use of the whatsapp app

are these brothers going to teach to say kitabun or just kitab?

i was having a discussion with folks just this morning about teaching kitabun to newbies, it just confuses them

(hopefully folks understand what i am saying, it would take too long to type out)

What we have in mind is that the person must study indvidiualy using a method (with a teacher, bayinnah, madinah books, shariah program, or any other).
As for the group, we help each other out with grammar rules by trying to explain in a different way or presenting more examples, sentences, etc.
As well as translating ayaat from the Qur'an, ahadeeth, poetry etc,
And also a way for one to make sentences in Arabic and get corrected.

It is basically a classroom. This is a group effort; the more people there are the better it is for everyone.

    Re: Arabic Watsapp Group

i know this may not be the norm, but i have major issues with using the "madina book" for starters

    it just doesnt work

you dont learn a language by learning grammar first, you learn by using words, piece by piece until you can make an intelligible sentence, then you learn to properly construct a sentence and THEN you learn grammar and the rules

this is the way we all learned our mother tongue, NOT by learning the rules of grammar first, you didnt do that until you were about 7-10 years old

for some reason, someone thinks you can learn arabic by learning grammar first, and for native arabs, that may be needed because they have learned their colloquial arabic first, so they need to relearn the proper syntax of fus'ha

non arabs find the madina book the hardest, YET, thats the way everyone wants to teach them

I personally went through the Madinah Arabic books and I can say I am pretty confident in understanding with the help of a dictionary.
I think what makes a difference is whom you study the books with, as for me, I watched the videos on LQToronto (link) - they are extremely long (6 months course). It makes a huge difference as the teacher is explaining stuff - approaching topics in a certain way, etc.

Vocab is extremely important as well - ANKI is excellent for this.

Agreed, I've dropped out so many times due to this very same reason..

I've just started Bayna Yadayk and am finding it easy to pick up.

I "dropped out" from Medina Books before finishing book 1. Not because it's hard or anything, but I just found his method too slow, like teaching kids or old people. It's like my brain didn't get enough stimulation. But it's good for retention and building foundation I guess.

Is it true that bayna yadayk is intended more toward intermediate students?

Not really akhi, I don't understand why they wrote that on their blurb.
Book 1 starts with salam, what's your name? Introducing yourself, introducing someone else etc.
I'd say it's perfect for the beginner, especially someone who doesn't prefer the way Madina Book is structured.

I think it is important to understand that the author was a non-arab may allah raise his rank . The mode of study of non-arabs has always been very grammar oriented. The reason being that such mode of study allows the student to understand texts faster but it isn't great for overall language development. Hence non-arabs aren't great at balagha whilst being experts at grammar and syntax.

non arab arabic speaker has more mutoon/rules memorised the average arabic speaker yet his linguistic skill sounds very stiff and not fluid.

I think if you are going to do something like this you should focus on conversation and build language skills in the same manner a child does as AbuM mentioned
The idea behind studying a language

I don't think it's appropriate to have brothers and sisters on the same Whatsapp group.

Brothers should teach brothers and sisters teach sisters

Someone showed me a screenshot of the group and there were too many ":D" and "" being used between brothers and sisters.

I realize it's a good effort and convenient to learn Arabic, but we still need to be mindful of free-mixing.

Yea, what he said. Brothers make one group, and sisters can make their own group. Having one group is very dangerous, don't make me investigate and start infracting and banning people. Please take the advice.
"Allah's choicest people are those whom His fear has driven to absolute silence although they are neither helpless nor dumb. Rather they are possessors of eloquence and have power to speak and sense to understand. But constant glorification of Allah's name has so overpossessed their wits that their hearts are overawed and their lips sealed. When they get established in this stage they hasten towards righteoussness."

With a teacher, fourth lesson next week inn sha Allah.
Our previous teacher got busy and started missing lessons, so our Tajweed teacher's taken over.
I think if I complete this book, Madina Book will be easier to deal with inn sha Allah.

Experience: Over 10 years of experience in teaching Arabic, the Islamic Sciences, fiqh, tafseer and aqeedah to non-native speakers of Arabic, namely those from a western background rates are excellent, much much cheaper than what you'd pay for a tutor in the UK or else where.

The teacher will use a variety of exercises which will help the learner to understand and master each of the patterns occurring in the lesson. The vocabulary will range from classical and Quranic Arabic to words and expressions current in modern Arabic.

    First Step to Quran Reading

This course is for those students who wish to take their first steps into learning to read and write the Arabic script of the Qur’an starting from the Alphabet with its (Makhraj) correct pronunciations. It will cover learning the letters, vowel and the basic rules needed for Quranic reading. At the end of the course the student will be able to read the Quran and identify the letters, vowels and different symbols of tajweed. Was it too difficult? Perhaps, you might find it helpful later in your Arabic study.

    Re: Arabic Watsapp Group

I find whatsapp groups a real big fitnah and distractions even ones where its sisters only.

Im only part of one, and thats for the class I teach and pretty much only I post in.

I later realised that being part of a mixed group, that was so large and so active would be at the detriment of so many other things...so I left.

Ameen, I think it was the focus on grammar in the Madina Book, that used to make me lose my attention in class.
    I found it boring-__-
I learnt basic Arabic just from being around Arab brothers and when travelling in the ME.
I think this maybe why I'm enjoying Bayna Yadayk.
Learning vocab is definitely fun and more engaging.

As I mentioned before, each to their own, some of my friends prefer Madina book and others prefer Miftah.

I'm of the opinion that the issue of freemixing in the Whatsapp group needs to be rethought, considering that:

    1. This is for the sake of seeking islamic knowledge.
    2. No khalwah (a man and a woman being alone).
    3. No chance of looking at each other.
