City University and University of Westminster ???

    Assalaam alaikum.........

I am just wondering how is it for Muslims in these univeristies, I mean City University and University of Westminster.

Anyone been there or currently there.........?

Could any one tell me of their experience there as a Muslim especially the sisters in Hijab/Jilbaab.

    Thanks

    Its fine.

Loads of Muslims at both those universities, active Islamic societies, and sisters in hijaab and jilbaabs. Its a normal sight in most universities in London alhamdullillah.
    What does 'freedom' mean?

Does the eagle want to swim in the sea,
    Restricted by the sky?

Does the fish want to dance on the wind,
    Not enough river to explore?

Yet the sky is freedom for the bird
    but death for the fish,

The sea is wide for the fish
    but will engulf the bird.

We ask for freedom but freedom to do what?
We can only express our nature as it was created.

The prayer mat of the earth is freedom,
freedom from slavery to other than the One,
Who offers an shoreless ocean of love to swim in
and a horizon that extends to the next life,

As in they are apparent within the universities. Both the universities you mentioned are part of the University of London, and may often have interrelated talks/ gatherings.

All of them have Islamic societies.

Once you join up to your society, you will be kept informed of events etc, not just for your own uni, but for other uni Islamic society's. Mostly done through email/ posters etc.

If you are asking about what type of societies they are, ie: their thinking, well I only know about a few of the Universities of London.

Are you planning on going to either of these universities bro/sis?

    No way.

King's (Waterloo campus) has the BEST prayer room I have ever seen (trust me I've seen a few )

It is purpose built, in their new (now old) building, and has full wudu facilities.

    MashaAllah @ masjid!

Although its not always easy getting the university to agree to give you prayer rooms/ space sometimes.

May Allah reward those students who put in time and effort to benefit us all.

Some uni's have a *quiet room* or a *contemplation room* (which is a prayer room anyway ) but they are not allowed to show favouritism to certain groups over another.

UCL was one of them, because it was secular and did not give prayer rooms etc to any religious groups- but mashaAllah the Islamic society put forward a strong side and now they have a prayer room (the uni insists it is a meditation room )

Has city got a website I can visit, I mean the Muslim society at City University........

And to Seven...... How do you find the department of Informatic at the City is it good, particularly this lady.......if you know her ....Cooper, one of the department head.

I went there on the open day she was extra-ordinarily nice to me at the open day, I was beginning to think it was a dream considering me in hijab and all that.......

Tell me about anything you know of this department if you know.

    Thanks

Well yeah you could join up- for most societies there is a membership fee (ranging from £2- £5) which basically covers certain costs for events etc. SOAS and UCL usually work closely together anyway- and Westminister is only around the corner (near UCL's medicine block- behind Tottenham Court Road).

    Happy families eh.

Your freshers fair will be an eye opener to what kind of societies some Uni's host.

I remember one uni had a satan-worshipping society while another had a couch potato society

Have fun And make sure you get a freebie from every stall.

Some societies do nothing- the main purpose for some, is because once you have established a society- the university gives them a fund which they can use to support any events they decide to host. The ISOC will spend this on getting speakers, renting out halls for talks, equipment for events etc.

Then when Ramadhan comes and they realise they are short, they'll get free iftar off the local Muslim restaurants.

Its near the BT tower- again it depends what campus you want to go to (I think it has 2/3 ?)

UCL is almost sitting on Euston Square Station (one campus only)

City is a 5 minutes walk from Angel Islington station.
