    Some Islamic Medicine..

    lslam is the religion of all times and places.It is a perfect system of temporal values. By practicing its laws Muslims all over the world not only attain spirituality but the pinnacle of all other glories and gain the wealth of health.

    There is a great inter-relationship between modern medicine and some of our Islamic teachings.

    Every word of Qur'an is in fact an experience of great reality and science is just an effort made towards this reality. Knowledge is limitless and its horizons are constantly expanding with every strike of progress disclosing fresh informations and according to Qur'an knowledge is a comprehensive text and it involves all branches of science, religion, technology, agriculture, engineering and medicine. It is definitely a miracle of our sacred religion that it expands on all branches of human knowledge. This is known from the following quotation from Qur'an:

    "We have revealed to you the Scripture so that it might be a clear evidence for every thing."

    In the following paper I have tried to elucidate that the guide lines given in the Quran and Sunnah concerned with the promotion of physical health of humans have been duly proved by years of modem medical science research all over the world. Some of them I am going to deal with in this paper.



    PRAYERS:

    In Sura Moon "God deprecates those who are careless in their prayers offer them only for show." The blessed Prophet told us "Prayers are certainly health promoting."
    Although the real purpose of prayers is the worship of God yet there is a large number of additional benefits also.


    EXERCISE:

    As we eat three times daily we need exercise to lessen the cholesterol in the body which increases in blood after meals, thickens blood and leads to the deposition of slit in the arteries.

    In addition to saving us from the sins and elevating us to the heights of spirituality prayers are great help in maintaining our physical health. They keep our body active, help digestion and save us from muscle and joint diseases through regular balanced exercise. They help the circulation of blood and also mitigate the bad effect of cholesterol. Prayers play a vital role in acting as a preventive measure against heart attack, paralyses, premature senility, dementia, loss of control on sphineters, diabetes mellitus etc.

    Collateral circulation plays a major role in decreasing the danger of heart attack in patients. Patients above 55 years of age in which this type of circulation is developed have less severe attacks. It is possible to speed up the development of collateral circulation by regular and balanced exercises which is present in the prayers are not only potent, preventive measure against coronary heart diseases but also help in the development of collateral circulation in those people who have already suffered from a heart attack or are prone to it.

    Heart patients should offer-the five obligatory prayers regularly as they get the permission from their doctor to leave bed.

    The arrangement of prayers is such that those at the time of empty stomach are brief but those after meals are longer and give more exercise to the body.

    During the month of Fast (Ramadan) the additional twenty Rakaat (Tarawih) are added to the late evening prayers because more than normal food is usually consumed after breaking fast.

    The performance of prayers put almost all muscles of the body in action. Different groups of muscles are activated while performing prayers. During Sajda blood supply to the brain is improved. One of the useful methods to strengthen the muscles of the knee joints to mitigate the strain on knees in osteo arthritis is the regular exercise of these muscles during prayers.


    HEART:

    This vital organ of the body has to be always healthy and efficient as it is responsible for the circulation of blood. Diseased heart results in deterioration of the healthy body. This knowledge we obtained after centuries of scientific research yet it was simply told to us fourteen hundred years ago by our great Prophet (peace be upon him).


    "Verily in the body there is such apiece of flesh that if it remains alright the whole body keeps well but if this piece of flesh develops some defect the whole body becomes unhealthy. Behold,- this piece of flesh - it is heart." (Bokhari, Muslim ...



    SIESTA:

    It was the habit of our blessed Prophet to sleep for a while after lunch, his companions also followed this practice. This short nap gives relief to the vital organs of the body like heart and brain.


    MODERATION IN FOOD:

    Both Qur'anand Hadithhave touched this topic, Qur'antells us in Ayah 30 of Sura Al Airaf:

    "O children of Adam, look to your adornment of every place of worship and eat and drink but not prodigal Lo! He loveth not the prodigals."

    Strenthening this order, the Prophet has strictly forbidden over eating in the following Haith:

    "It is enough to eat few morsels of food to keep one's back straight."

    "If you must eat more, be sure that only one third of your stomach is filled with food, one third is left for water and the remaining one third for air."

    "A Muslim eats in one intestine (stomach) whereas a non believer eats in seven intestine."

    It has been proved beyond doubt that over eating is the root of many diseases and also responsible for premature senility. It produces obesity, predisposes to dangerous diseases like diabetes, Menitus, hypertension, coronary heart disease and paralysis.


    DIABETES MELLITUS:

    This is due to insulin deficiency. Overeating gets the special cells of the pancreas (islets of Langerhans) over worked so it cannot meet the increased demand for insulin . Those cells may get tired, atrophy and causes difficiency of insulin .


    PARALYSIS, CORONARY HEART DISEASE & PREMATURE SENILITY:

    Their basic course is the narrowing of the coronary arteries. Paralysis is the natural result of blocking of an artery in the brain, should this happen in the heart Myocardial infarction results. Premature senility is installed when majority of the arteries in the body get narrowed.

    Slit in the form of cholesterol and triglycerides is deposited in the arteries. Over eating increases blood cholesterol levels. Pork and beef contain high cholesterol values while on the other hand birds have the least amount. Qur'an mentioned that birds meat is one of the specialties of Paradise.

    Olive has been repeatedly mentioned in Qur'an, and statistics shows that heart attacks occur more in Northern Italy where they use butter and margarine for cooking than in Southern Italy where olive oil is generally used.

    Patients suffering from narrowing of the coronary artery usually develop the heart attack after a heavy meal.


    FORBIDDEN ARTICLES OF FOOD:


    1. Blood:

    Ingested blood on reaching the intestine is acted upon by various bacteria normally present there resulting in poisonous products like ammonia which is toxic to the liver.Therefore,God has forbidden us to eat or drink blood and has prescribed such a method for slaughtering animals that most of their blood is shed.


    2. Pork:

    There are two harmful worms harbored by pigs, one is "TAENIASOLIUM" which on ingestion passes to the brain and causes epilepsy. The other one is"TRICHINELLASPIRALIS"which passes to the muscles and brain causing muscular swelling and pain and also epilepsy. Pork has more fat and cholesterol than any other meat.


    3. Alcohol:

    Numerous diseases have been attributed to alcohol like dyspeptic trouble, peptic ulceration, cancer stomach, pancreatitus, cirrhosis liver, vitamin deficiency and coronary heart disease.


    CIRCUMCISION:

    One of the criteria of Islam is that every Muslim should be circumcised. This is medically suggested now a days as a toxic substance called Smegma may collect under the redundant skin causing cancer of the genitalia in both man and his wife, inflammation of the penis, phthisis, sticking of the redundant skin over the urethral opening leading to difficulty in urination.


    WASHING AFTER DEFECATION:

    This beneficial habit saves us from Pilonidal sinus which is an abscess with hair inside occurring near anal opening.

    Pylonephritis: This is more in women due to the proximity of the urethral opening to the anus so toilet paper while being used may bring germs like E. coli to the urethra.


    ABOLUTION:

    A pre requisite of prayers yet one of the most hygienic procedure as it usually keeps the exposed parts of our body clean and also the parts of entry like mouth and nose thus avoiding Infection.


    PREVENTION OF INFECTION:

    Infection may be transmitted through dirty hands or dirty food.
    Hands: It is essential to wash our hands before and after meals. Our blessed Prophet told us:

    "It is a blessing to wash your hands before and after meals" (Abu Daud & Tirmizi)

    He has also advised us not to clean our hands with a towel before meals as they may convey infection from one person to the other particularly viral diseases like infective hepatitis or bacterial infection like Typhoid dysentries and cholera.

    Or Prophet said "Whosover gets up from slumber should not dip his hand in any utensil unless he washes them three times, who knows what things he has been touching during sleep." (Bokhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Nisai)


    ARTICLES OF BEVERAGES:

    These articles should be handled with great care. If the food is in open utensil they should be covered to avoid contamination. Stressing this our Prophet said "Cover up the utensils and tie the mouth of the water skins." (Bokhari, Muslim)

    He said, "Why did you not cover the utensil carrying the milk even if-it was with a piece of wood."


    DENTAL HYGIENE:

    Particular stress has been laid by our Prophet on this as it is very important in the prevention of disease. He attached great importance to "Miswak" a twig of a tree used for brushing teeth. "If I had not thought this to be an unbearable hardship for my followers I would have prescribed the use of Miswak before every prayers." (Bokhari, Muslim)

    According to modern dentistry the best method of using a Miswak or a tooth brush is up and down the length of the teeth and this exactly the way our Prophet used his Miswak.


    KHILLALA:

    The blessed Prophet said "Whosoever eats should pick bits and pieces from in between his teeth."

    It is beneficial act so that those do not rot and produce disease.


    HEATSTROKE:

    Covering the head and neck as our Prophet used to do, mitigate the danger of hyperpyrexia which is due to imbalance of the heat control centre situated in the hind brain, which may lead to death.


    TREATMENT OF FEVER:

    Death occurs if the temperature of the body exceeds 106 degrees irrespective of the cause. Medically speaking the first line of treatment is to lower the temperature by cold water, ice sponging or even immersing the patient in cold water. On this Prophet said:

    "The fever is related to the Hell. Application of cold water keeps it away." (Ibne Maja)


    CONSTIPATION:

    The blessed Prophet advised that while defaecating keep pressure on the left foot (Tibrani). In squatting position this maneuvers will cause pressure on the descending colon. Medically this helps evacuation of feaces from the descending colon thus relieving constipation, particularly when muscles of the abdomen are weak.


    DISEASES OF DIGESTION:

    Several Hadiths pertaining to this were said:

    "It is unbecoming to eat in the Bazar (Market)."
    "Whosoever eats earth aid his death." (Tibrani)
    " Use curry with food even if it is in the form of water. " (Tibrani).
    "Vinegear is a very good curry."
    "The best curry is common salt."

    Salt depletion through perspiration during summer is increased thus it is obligatory to use common salt during this period.

    Our Prophet liked pumpkin (one of the vegetables) as it is easily digested and less likely to produce flatulence.

    Our Prophet said. "It is not right to eat your food quickly, besides this one should eat from what lies nearest to one" (Bokhari, Muslim)


    EPIDEMIC PREVENTION:

    Hygiene is very important. Cleanliness prevent infection entering the citadel of human body and this guards us against ill health and epidemics- God ordered our Prophet in Sura Al-Muddassir:

    "O, Prophet keep your apparel clean and meticulously avoid filth and rubbish."

    Our Prophet said, "God Almighty is himself pure and likes purity, God himself is clean and likes cleanliness."

    "God Abnighty dislikes dust, dirt and disheveled hair."
    "Avoid three things which are cursed. To urinate at the source of water, in the shade, in the pathways."

    (ibne Maja)


    "No one should pass water in standing water."

    (Bokhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood)


    "If any one of you yawns,,cover your mouth with hands."

    (Muslim, Abu Dawood)

    One should avoid coughing, sneezing, yawning or laughing with fully open mouth near other persons as the breathed out bacteria may spread in the atmosphere and be conveyed to other persons.


    STREET AND ROADS:

    Town planning is based on broad and airy roads so that there is no obstruction to the flow of traffic and to avoid congestion which helps of communicable diseases. Our blessed Prophet fourteen hundred years ago said "keep the breadth of the streets seven arms length.

    ACUPUNCTURE:

    Ibis was mentioned in the authenticated Hadith as an effective treatment of several disease. Research work is being carried out in China and other parts of the world to use acupuncture as a method of treatment.

    There are other aspects of medicine which have been dealt with in Islam for example:

    1. Quacks should not treat patients.

    2. Treatment and prevention of disease have been recommended and practiced by the Prophet.

    3. When you visit a patient do not stay long.

    There are many priceless gems of knowledge in the Qur'an and Hadith from which man can benefit immensely. These are but brief facts of medicine which have been mentioned before in Qur'an and Hadith and there is a lot more to be discovered and studied.

    Prophetic Medicine: An Old Prescription for a New Era

    Most Commonly Documented Prophetic Remedies

    Henna

    Henna (scientifically known as lawsonia inermis) has been well known for a long time in the Muslim world. It is extensively grown in India and Sudan, and is used mainly for cosmetic purposes

    . The plant is sometimes called the "Magic Plant" because it has a great healing effect, contains many healing substances like tannine and other glue-like substances, and it has an anti-microbial and an anti-viral effect. It is natural, inexpensive, and has no known sides effects when taken orally. Indications for its use are as follows:

    Burns: It is very effective when applied to a first or second degree burn. It:

    -reduces pain.

    -reduces fluid loss from the burn site, which is important if the area is large.

    -has an anti-microbial effect, and so reduces the risk of infection.

    -sticks on the wound site until healing is complete.

    -is easy to apply either in paste or powder form.

    -is inexpensive and easily available.

    Healing Properties: Henna promotes wound healing, especially chronic wounds and ulcers. The main cause of this is not known, but it may be its nourishing effect on the wound and its anti-microbial properties.

    Anti-Hemorrhage Effect: Henna has proven to be efficient in the management of nose bleeding (epistaxis), providing a long-lasting cure. One dose is generally sufficient. It is more successful than cauterization, which normally has to be repeated and cannot guarantee that there will not be a recurrence of bleeding. The only side effect of henna here is that it can cause slight sneezing. Henna can be used at other sites like a bleeding duodenal ulcer or oesophageal varicose veins, with no known side effects. Its anti-bleeding effect may be due to its coagulation or local burning properties.

    Anti-Viral Effect: Henna has an anti-viral effect. This is evident in its treatment of warts (particularly those that are resistant to liquid nitrogen treatment), Herpes Simplex (applied as a powder, it dries the vesicles at the site, prevents ulceration and crust formation, and prevents secondary infection). This benefit of henna is very promising, and should be explored further. It can also be used to treat AIDS.

    Onion seed or hibat al-barakah (Nigella sativa)

    This plant is found throughout India in the form of bushes, with blue flowers, that reach a height of approximately half a meter. It originally came from Turkey and Italy, and was brought to India by physicians to be cultivated. The seeds are black and triangular in shape, have a strong pungent smell, and contain a considerable amount of oil.

    It is incorrect that Arabs learnt about its benefits from Greeks because, before the advent of Islam, there is no record of its use. Its therapeutic use was initiated after Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) mentioned its efficacy and its potential to cure. Abu Hurayrah states, "I have heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say that there is cure for every disease in black seeds except death."

    Khalid Ibn Sa`ad states that he was traveling with Ghalib Ibn Jabr when he (Ghalib) fell ill during the journey. Ibn Abi Ateeq (nephew of Ayesha) came to meet us. On seeing the distressed one, he took five or seven black seeds, ground them, mixed them in olive oil and dropped them into both his (Ghalib's) nostrils. Ghalib Ibn Jabr became healthy with this treatment.

    Ayesha told us that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) stated that there is cure in black seeds for all ailments except sam. I asked him, "What is sam?" He said, "Death."

    Chemical Composition: The seeds contain 1.5 % volatile oil and 37.5 % non-volatile oil. In addition to this albumen, sugar, organic acids, glucoside, melanthin, metarbin and bitter substances are also found. The glucoside is toxic in nature; hence its in large doses and for a prolonged period may be harmful.

    Its therapeutic uses are as follows:

    -Zahbi stated that it removes the obstruction of any part of the body, expels the gases and strengthens the stomach.

    -It is emmenagogue, lactogogue and a diuretic.

    -It is an anti-helminthic, if taken with vinegar and useful with chronic colds.

    -Its inhalation is beneficial in the treatment of common colds.

    -Its oil is effective with alopecia (hair loss).

    -Half a teaspoon, if boiled in water, is helpful for asthma and alleviates the toxic effects of bee and wasp stings.

    -Continuous use of the seeds is effective for mad dog bites.

    -Paralysis, facial palsy, migraine, amnesia and palpitations are also ailments which benefit from it.

    -It can also be used as an expectorant and antipyretic.

    -It normalizes the secretions of the stomach and pancreas. This is very effective in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus.

    -It expels stones in the kidney and bladder if taken with honey.

    -It is effective in jaundice when taken with milk.

    -Its powder, when taken with water, is good for hemorrhoids.

    -If black seeds are boiled in vinegar and then applied to the teeth and gums, it reduces inflammation and pain of the gums.

    -It is also reported that its fine powder is effective if applied in the early stages of cataracts.

    -Black seed is also used for skin disorders.

    -The oil is also effective in earache.

    Olives

    The olive, a sign of peace and friendship throughout the world, is described in the Holy Qur'an in Surat At-Teen.

    Found extensively in Asia minor, Palestine, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Italy, North Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, the state of California in America, Mexico, Peru and southern Australia, the olive plant stretches up to three meters in height. Its leaves are bright green and very attractive; and its fruits are bright bluish or violet in color. Although olives consumed straight from the plant are very nutritious, they are not usually eaten due to their metallic taste. A pickled version is consumed largely in Europe. Olives are preserved in vinegar and imported from Spain, Italy, France, Turkey and Greece, and are favored in Europe and Arab countries. Olive oil is a good preservative for other foods such as sardines and other fish.

    The use of olives goes back to ancient times. Vessels full of olive oil have been found, among other articles, during the excavation of ancient Egyptian graves. According to the scholars of Hadith, when the Great Flood subsided, the first thing to be seen on the earth was an olive tree.

    According to Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, Sayyid Al-Ansari narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said, "Eat olive oil and massage it over your bodies since it is a holy (mubarak) tree."

    According to Ibn Al-Juzi, Zanbi, Alqama Ibn Amir narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said, "There is olive oil for you; eat it, massage it over your body, since it is effective for hemorrhoids." Basoor reported that Aqba Ibn Amir narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) stated, "You have the olive oil from this Holy (mubarak) tree; treat yourself with this, since it cures the anal fissure." Abu Na'im reported that Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) stated, "Eat the olive oil and apply it (locally), since there is cure for seventy diseases in it, [and] one of them is leprosy."

    Composition:

    Olive oil has a place in pharmacology in the U.S.A. and Britain. Both of these countries have attributed prime importance to olive oil in the treatment of various ailments, and have fixed standard parameters to evaluate its purity.

    It contains palmatic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, steanic acid, myristic acid and glycerides. In this case, it is not dissolved in water but in alcohol, ether, chloroform and liquid paraffin.

    The adulterant very often used in the olive oils found on the market is the seeds of the tea plant, arachis oil. Sometimes machine gun oil and refined machine oil are also found in it.

    According to Ibn Al-Qayyim, the red colored oil is better than the blackish one. Its therapeutic uses are:

    -It gives exuberance to the facial complexion.

    -Prevention against poisons.

    -Regulates the digestive process.

    -Expels intestinal parasites.

    -A good tonic, making the hair healthy, shiny and makes it stronger. Adds luster.

    -A massage of olive oil with ordinary salt over the gums is a remedy for several diseases of the gums and teeth.

    -Local application of olive oil or the water extracted from the crushed olive oil leaves is effective on boils, rashes and itching.

    -Chronic ulcers and boils, which are difficult to heal, are healed with olive oil when applied locally.

    -According to Zahbi, it strengthens the hair and body; hence can be used as a good tonic and for delaying the aging process.

    -It helps raise a low libido.

    -A combination of normal saline and olive oil is highly effective in burns.

    -A soak of olive leaves in water is effective against mouth and lip ulcers, and dermatitis due to allergies.

    -The concentrated watery solution of the extract of olive leaves and fruits is very effective against dental cavities and leukoplaquea in the mouth.

    -This solution is applied along with vinegar for alopecia to enhance hair growth.

    -It is also stated that the local application of this extract removes the scars of small pox and boils.

    -Ground olive seeds mixed with butter is effective on brittle nails.

    -Pickles prepared from olives are a good appetizer, and stop constipation.

    -Its crushed leaves can be applied locally to check excessive perspiration.

    -The water extracted from the leaves along with honey is used for ear drops and is effective in various ear ailments. The oil procured by burning the wood of the olive branch is effective against all fungal infections, e.g., ringworm, tenia, versicolor in addition to eczema, psoriasis, dandruff and alopecia.

    -Applying olive oil on the scalp is highly effective against dandruff.

    -It causes hair growth and reduces hair loss. The application of olive oil in the eyes relieves inflammation.

    -A massage of olive oil all over the body tones up the muscles and organs, and relieves muscular pain.

    -Some physicians also advocate a massage of olive oil for epilepsy.

    -It relieves the sciatica and arthritis.

    Ointment prepared from olive oil has very good healing agents:

    -It heals the sinuses and fistuli very quickly.

    -If taken internally, 25ml of olive oil mixed with 250ml of barley water is highly effective against chronic constipation.

    -It is a good diuretic; hence is used in ascites.

    -It removes kidney stones.

    -In view of the research carried out in the U.S. and Britain, one concludes that it is good nourishment, particularly for kidney ailments where an intake of nitrogen containing protein is contraindicated.

    -We mentioned already that the Prophet (pbuh) stated that it is a good remedy for anal fissure. Hence, patients were advised to take two spoonfuls of olive oil at bedtime and an ointment was applied on the fissure locally before sleeping and in the morning. The ointment is prepared from eight spoonfuls of olive oil and two spoonfuls of ground henna leaves.

    -Its combination with other prescribed drugs of Prophetic Medicine is a good remedy for psoriasis and eczema.

    -The impressions of several doctors practicing in Middle East and North Africa reveal that gastro-intestinal cancer is not detected among those who are used to consuming olive oil. Japanese doctors also endorse this, and have the opinion that olive oil prevents the incidence of cancer in the gastro-intestinal tract.

    Siwak and Dental Hygiene

    A variety of oral hygiene measures have been performed since the dawn of time. This has been verified by various excavations throughout the world where toothpicks, chew-sticks, twigs, linen strips, birds' feathers, animal bones and porcupine quills were recovered.

    Those that originated from plants, although primitive, represent a transitional step towards the modern toothbrush. About 17 different plants have be used as natural instruments of oral hygiene.

    The most widely used twig since early times is the Siwak or Miswak. The stick is obtained from a plant called salvadore persica that grows around Makkah and in the Middle East in general. Although there is no reference to the use of the siwak in the Qur'an, there are several hadith mentioning the benefits of siwak in maintaining oral hygiene; hence, it has been used widely among Muslims since the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). In this respect, our Prophet (pbuh) can be considered among the first dental instructors of proper oral hygiene.

    Composition: Salvadora persica is a small tree or shrub with a crooked trunk that is seldom more than one foot in diameter. It has scabrous and cracked bark, and is whitish with pendulous branches. The root bark is light brown and the inner surfaces are white. It has an odorlike cress, and its taste is warm and pungent.

    To ascertain its chemical composition, the air-dried stem bark of salvadora persica was extracted with 80% alcohol and then ether, and underwent exhaustive chemical procedures which indicated that it is composed of trim ethylamine, an alkaloid which may be salvadorine, chlorides, high amounts of fluoride and silica, sulfur, Vitamin C and small quantities of tannins, saponins, fiavenoids andsterols.

    Repeated use of siwak during the day produces an unusually high level of oral cleanliness. It has been proven that plaque is formed immediately after eating. After 24 hours, it starts to act on the teeth. However, it can be eliminated through meticulous tooth-brushing.

    Proper oral hygiene should be taught by dentists, but it requires a person's time and dexterity. Among those Muslims who ritually practice the use of siwak, rigid oral hygiene by a dentist may not be required.

    Siwak and other twigs can be effective in removing soft oral deposits. They can even be promoted as effective instruments in oral health and dental programs for the population at large.

    There is evidence that salvadora persica contains antibacterial properties. Some other components are astringents, detergents and abrasives. These properties encourage some toothpaste laboratories (Beckenham, UK, Sarakan Ltd.) to incorporate powdered stems and/or root material of salvadora persica in their products. Although commercial powders may be highly efficient in plaque removal, their use has been shown in a survey to cause a high incidence of gingivitis. Plaque eradication is essential, but it should not be in a manner that creates negative side effects for other tissues.

    In conclusion, siwak and powdered siwak are excellent tools for oral cleanliness. They are highly recommended in preventive dental health programs in Muslim countries. Recommendations should be made to manufacturers of toothpaste to include the powdered form of siwak in an abrasive form of toothpaste.

    Islamic Food Facts

    Milk: The Prophet(SAW) said that milk wipes away heat from the heart just as the finger wipes away sweat from the brow. It strengthens the back, increases the brain, augments intelligence, renews vision and drives away forgetfulness.

    Honey: Considered to be the best remedy for diarrhoea when mixed in hot water. It is the food of foods, drink of drinks and drug of drugs. It is used for creating appetite, strengthening the stomach, eliminating phlegm, as a meat preservative, hair conditioner, eye salve and mouthwash. It is extremely beneficial in the morning in warm water and is also a sunnah.

    Olive oil: excellent treatment for skin and hair, delays old age, treats inflammation of the stomach

    Mushroom: The Prophet(SAW) said that mushroom is a good cure for the eyes, it also serves as a form of birth control and arrests paralysis.

    Grapes: The Prophet was very fond of grapes, it purifies the blood, provides vigour and health, strengthens the kidneys and clears the bowels.

    Dates: The Prophet (SAW) said that a house without dates has no food, also to be eaten at the time of childbirth.

    Figs: It is a fruit from paradise and a cure for piles.

    Barley: Good for fever in a soup form

    Melon: Melon contains 1000 blessings and 1000 mercies, The prophet SAW said "None of your women who are pregnant and eat of water melon will fail to produce off spring who are good in countenance and good in character.

    Pomegranate: The Prophet (SAW) said it cleanse you of Satan and evil aspirations for 40 days.

    Water: the Prophet (SAW) said the best drink in this world and the next is Water, when you are thirsty drink it by sips and not gulps, gulping produces sickness of the liver.

    So praise be to our beloved Nabi (SAW) who produced us with marvellous knowledge which dazzles the wisest minds. May this information be beneficial to all of us Insha-Allah

    06/06/2001 The word 'orange' comes from the Sanskrit 'narang,' which in turn comes from the Tamil word 'naru'… meaning fragrant (Reid, p.1), and it has been said that the scent of oranges alone can relieve stress and tension (Lawless, pg. 69). Oranges however, can relieve a lot more than just anxiety. They can also fight cancer, skin diseases, colds, the flu and a number of other ailments.

    Oranges contain flavanoids, which are one of the largest groups of dietary antioxidants. Antioxidants, including Vitamin C, prevent deterioration by oxidation and act as free radical scavengers (Just-food, p.1). Free radicals cause the kind of cellular damage that can lead to cancer, heart disease, arthritis and aging (Messina p.1). A single orange contains up to 70mg of Vitamin C, which is nearly 117% of the recommended daily amount (Reid p.1). Therefore, an orange assists in healing, boosting the immune system, helping in the absorption of iron and reducing the risk of cancer (Reid, p.1).

    Oranges are also a natural source of folic acid and Vitamin B. Studies have shown that most people, especially pregnant women, are not getting enough of these vitamins. A study published last year, by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests that women who do not metabolize folic acid properly are at a greater risk of having a child with Downs Syndrome. The U.S. Public Health Service advised women of childbearing age to ensure an adequate intake of folic acid. A deficiency in Vitamin B can cause serious neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly (Just-food, p.1)

    Oranges are also a low-fat and easily metabolized source of carbohydrates. Within the 70 calories of a medium-sized orange, there are16 grams of carbohydrates. During physical activity, the muscles use stored carbohydrates, called glycogen, to fuel daily activity. Eating carbohydrate-rich foods, like oranges, ensures a speedy recovery after a workout (Just-food, p.1). Oranges are also a good source of fiber, which keeps the intestinal tract healthy and eating some of the spongy-white pith of an orange helps increase fiber intake. The water-soluble fiber in oranges also helps lower blood cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of heart disease (Reid, p.2 and Just-food, p.1).

    Orange juice can improve digestion because it is rich in salts and acts as a stimulant to the digestive system by improving peristaltic activity and the flow of gastric juices in the colon. It is recommended that one should drink a glass of orange juice one hour before breakfast.

    Oranges can also help soothe a feverish person. A fever is Allah's (swt) mechanism to help the body rid itself of accumulated toxins. Oranges can assist in two ways: the fruit acids satisfy the thirst of a feverish person and the juice increases elimination of toxins through the skin and kidneys (Kloss, p.662). Fresh orange juice in a baby's bottle can prevent scurvy, pellagra, rickets and infantile paralysis in situations where the child is not getting adequate nutrition. However, if a child has a diet low in milk products, orange juice is not a good idea as it could decalcify the system (Kloss, p, 663 and Colbin, p.161).

    The following are recipes for Carrot & Orange Salad and Orange Granita:

    Carrot & Orange Salad

    Grate 750g of carrots.
    Peel and cut an orange into small pieces and dress in a mixture of the juice of two oranges, one lemon and two tablespoons of orange blossom or rose water.
    Stir in chopped fresh coriander leaves.

    It is refreshing with a hot spicy dish (Roden, p.107).

    Orange Granita (A sorbet)

    600ml orange juice or 475ml of orange juice & 125ml of lemon juice
    900ml water
    375g sugar and
    1 tablespoon of orange blossom water.

    If you like a slightly acidic taste add more lemon juice.

    Boil the water and sugar together for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and when it cools, stir in the juice and the orange blossom water. Freeze in trays at the lowest setting. As the ice freezes a little, beat the mixture lightly with a fork without removing it from the tray. Repeat this a few times at half hourly intervals. Transfer this mixture from the freezer to the refrigerator for about twenty minutes before serving. You can serve it in the scooped out shells of small oranges and decorate if you wish.

    However, oranges do not have to be digested to be beneficial. They are heavily used in aromatherapy where aromatherapists often use Cistus sinensis, a popular essential oil, as well as the prized neroli oil.

    Neroli oil, derived from oranges, is a product of Spain, North Africa, the U.S. (the world's largest producer of oranges) and the Comoro Islands. It is extracted from the bitter orange blossom biguarade, which is native to China (Lavabre, p.89). Aromatherapists use these oils to reduce the body's temperature in cases of fever; to assist the body in digestion; to control lymphatic system secretions; and to control water retention. It also has a sedative effect in cases of hysteria, insomnia, pre-menstrual tension and shock (Lavabre p.89, 130-131).

    In fact, aromatherapists use every part of the orange tree as Allah (swt) has designed the root, stalk, branches, leaves, bark, petals and fruits as signatures of differing balancing properties.

    When choosing an orange, do not select it on the basis of color because sometimes they are dyed with food coloring. Green, rough or brownish patches on the skin of the orange do not necessarily give a good indication as to the quality or flavor, though naturally you should avoid moldy or spongy spots. Select the fruit on the basis of firmness and heaviness relative to the size. Once bought, they can be kept fresh by refrigeration. At room temperature they lasts a couple of days, depending on climatic conditions. But in the refrigerator, they can last for up to 2 weeks (Reid, p.1).

    What if you're lactose and fructose intolerant and can't eat fruits like dates, grapes, oranges, milk, etc. in sufficient quantities?
