Post The forgotten Sunnah's - Let's Revive Them!!

"Whoever revives an aspect of my Sunnah that is forgotten after my death,
he will have a reward equivalent to that of the people who follow him,
without it detracting in the least from their reward." (Tirmidhi 7/443)

Allah mention's time and time again that "Follow Allah and his Rasul" or "Obey Allah and his Rasul" .

So it would be good if we mention any Sunnah's that have been forgotten so we can implement them in our lives.

Examples of Forgotten Sunnah's can be Hijama (cupping), licking the fingers after eating and miswaak (Stick).
"The sinner does not care about whether he angers his Lord or not, all he cares about is satisfying his lusts and desires".

When dark clouds start to appear, Rasulullah would rush to the masjid to offer 2 rakaat Salaah. Today, when dark clouds appear, we take it lightly. Let us revive this sunnah. Ameen

Re: The forgotten Sunnah's - Let's Revive Them!!

The Prophet used to read the following dua as soon as he woke up from sleep:الحمد لله الذي احيانا بعدما اماتنا و اليه النشور (alhamdu lillahi-l-ladhi ahyaanaa ba'ada maa amaatana wa ilaihi-n-nushoor) Praise is for Allah, the one who made us alive after making us die and to him shall we return.

So as soon as you wake up rub your eyes and face, then read this Duaa.

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah who said that when the Messenger of Allah said: “If one of you puts on shoes, let him begin with the right. And when he takes it off, let him begin with the left. And let him put them both on or let him take them off both.”

I did not know this was a sunnah, I do this after I eat. Also, I think to mention eating with the hands is also important, since some (if not many) have abandoned this.

I read this when I wake up as well. And before sleeping, 'Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya'

Dua for putting on new apparel:

    اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ كَمَا كَسَوْتَنِيهِ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهُ وَخَيْرَ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ وَأَعُوذُ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ

Allahumma lakal-hamdu 'Anta kasawtaneehi, 'as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri maa suni'a lahu, wa 'a'oothu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu

"O Allah, all praise is to You, just as You have dressed me, I seek Your blessings of it and the blessings of what it is made of and I seek protection and Your refuge from all evil and the evil of that which it is made of".

    Dua for entering the toilet:

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

    Allaahumma innee a‛oodhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khabaa’ith

Before entering the toilet, one should recite this dua and enter with his left foot first.

    Dua for leaving the toilet:

    غُفْرَانَكَ اَلْحَمْدُ لِللَّهِ الَّذِيْ أَذْهَبَ عَنِّيْ الأَذّىَ وَ عَافَانِيْ

Ghufranaka al-hamdu lillahil ladhi adh-haba annil adha wa afani.

O Allah. I seek your forgiveness. All praises are due to Allah who has taken away from me the discomfort and granted me comfort.

When leaving the toilet one should recite this dua and exit with his right foot first.

Before eating, one should say 'Bismillah' or 'Bismillah wa ala barakatillah'

(Bit obvious I know but just in case some people don't).

Brushing the bed thrice before going to sleep. This one I always forgot to do but during the summertime, somehow a wasp was on my bed and it stung me. Now I always remember to do it alhamdulillah.

    * Aisha radiallahu anha would drink from a cup. The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would take this cup and search for the place where the lips of his beloved wife made contact. Upon finding the place where his wife drank from the cup, he would put his lips on the very same place so that his lips have touched the place where her lips touched.

Also, the prophet used to sleep on his right side with his right hand placed under his right cheek.

    Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
(The Prophet (ﷺ) said), "Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing)." But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire."

Why's it sunnah to lick our fingers after eating?

It is a Sunnah to lick the fingers after eating food. Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him while clarifying the guidance of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) (when eating food), said: “After finishing eating food, he [Prophet] used to lick his fingers.” Moreover, Anas may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to lick his three fingers when he finishes eating

In Sahih Muslim, Jaabir relates radiallahu anhu relates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wasallam commanded us to lick our fingers and the plate and he sallallahu alayhe wasallam said that you do not know (or you never know) which part of the food contains the barakah.

A forgotten sunnah is to add extra water to food so you have a larger portion of food and give some to the neighbours.

    1. Qinaa - which is a small cloth that the Prophet salallahu 'alaihi wa salim used to were in his hat in order to soak up oil.

    2. 'Asa (walking stick) - in Uswa i Rasool Akram it says that the Prophet salallahu 'alaihi wa salim used to always carry a walking stick with him, even when he rode on a camel. It is also reported in Shamaa'il Kubra that not many people will practice this sunnah as the Qiyamah nears.

    3. Suka - a small box that Prophet salallahu 'alaihi wa salim used to keep his 'itr (perfume) in.

    4. Henna and Katm - the Prophet salallahu 'alaihi wa salim used these as a dye and so did the Sahabah. The women used to always keep their hands died with henna as well, not just on special occasions.

I remember a hadith about Umm Salamah came to Prophet and her fingers are not adorned (i.e. no ring), so the Prophet told her that a woman should not let her fingers empty i.e. from ring, even if the ring was made of animal's skin. Please clarify this hadith if you can?

I just surprised why many don't consider women wearing ring as Sunnah.

    Drinking black seeds (habatussauda).
Wearing henna for women's nails. Now women prefer wearing nail polish.
    Wearing kohl on eyes.
Wearing trousers above ankles for men.
Cleaning between toes during ablution (wudu).

Kohl on the eyes is for men, right?

I have barely seen muslim men do it, it is not even a hard sunmah to do.

and you know henna... can that just be on the nails or does it have to be the whole tip of the fingers... because I have seen some women do nails and others the whole tip?

Kohl for both men and women.

Also Pippin already made a thread like this so AbuM should just merge this thread with that thread

Difference of opinion some say it beautifies her and she should not wear it outside (then again they also say that she should not wear jelewry outside even when it is clear from Hadiths that Aisha (rd) and the believing women use to wear jewelery outside the house) others say it is fine they use a hadith in which the Prophet (Saw) tells a woman to use Kohl and they say it shows that Kohl was a everyday thing and not just for the inside (Not giving a ruling just telling u the different opinions) I for one wear Kohl outside I just make sure not to make it dark and not add to much. The Kohl that was used was called Ithmid. If you want Kohl of the Sunnah I would use this website http://www.healthmeanswealth.co.uk/Kohl_Ithmid_Shop.php

Henna can be on nails only or the whole tip. The purpose is to differentiate female hands from male hands.

I don't see these as "forgetten Sunnah" as I've heard of them (I haven't scrolled through the whole page). But this thread is really good, people learn what's sunnah in an easy way. Perhaps sources would be good aswell , but google can fix that

I just surprised why many don't consider women wearing ring as Sunnah.

Jzk for the difference of opinion. I remember once i tried kohl for a party, and even after washing my face it was still visible... i try to not use it at hone since i know for a fact, it will be so so difficult to remove it when going outside. But if kohl is permissible outside that would make it easier for me.
Like i said, kohl tends to remain, or atleast you still have a visible fade-ish kohl smudge. Is it okay to pray with kohl?... since even after wudu it will still be somewhat there.

Also this i found in the site provided
"Ithmid cures headache when mixed with watery honey"... is it when you drink it? Or apply it to your eyes... sorry if that questions sounds stupid... i am just confused. But i really have bad headache, and if that is a method, natural method, of helping me with the headaches i constantly get then i would really like to try it.

    Lol so many questions.
    Bye...

Your welcome. You can pick the opinion you see the strongest.

With regards to praying with kohl and doing wudu then it should be valid. Or it is best you do wudu and then put the kohl on your eyes.

It doesn't mention drinking it just mixing it so apply it to the eyes. You can ask a scholar though.

That's a tragically comic story, but while we're on it, more sleeping-related sunnahs:

-Brushing of the teeth before sleeping (even if you already did for isha)
-Sleeping in a state of wudhu
    -Reading Surah al-Mulk
    -33x SubhanAllah, 33x Alhamdulillah, 34x Allahu Ackbar

And most importantly, naps are sunnah.

    Sunnahs of the Toilet :
Recite the dua before entering the toilet.( i.e. Allahumma inni auzbeka minal qubs wal qabaes )
    • Enter with the left foot.
    • To sit and urinate. One should never urinate whilst standing.
    • To leave the toilet with the right foot.
    • To recite the dua after coming out of the toilet (i.e. Ghufranaka )
    • One should not face Qiblah or show his back towards the Qiblah.
    • Do not speak in the toilet.
    • Be very careful of the splashes of urine (being unmindful in this regard causes one to be punished in the grave).
    • After relieving oneself, to cleanse oneself using water.

Anas reported: When the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) entered the privy, and in the hadith transmitted by Hushaim (the words are): When the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) entered the lavatory, he used to say: O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from wicked and noxious things.
    Sahih Muslim 3:729

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered the privy, he removed his ring.
    Abu Dawud 1:19

Narrated Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari: The Prophet said, “While defecating, neither face nor turn your back to the Qibla but face either east or west.” Abu Aiyub added. “When we arrived in Sham we came across some lavatories facing the Qibla; therefore we turned ourselves while using them and asked for Allah’s forgiveness.”
    Sahih Bukhari 1:8:388

Abu Qatada reported it from his father that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: When anyone amongst you enters the privy he should not touch his penis with his right hand.
    Sahih Muslim 2:512

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “Whoever tells you that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to urinate standing up, do not believe him. He only ever used to urinate sitting down
    Sahih al-Tirmidhi No. 11

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) wanted to answer the call of nature, he would not lift his garment until he had squatted close to the ground.”[
    al-Tirmidhi No. 14, see also Saheeh al-Jaami’ No. 4652

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Most of the punishment of the grave will be because of urine.”[3]
Ibn Maajah No. 342, see also Saheeh al-Jaami’ No. 1202

Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri: I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: When two persons go together for relieving themselves uncovering their private parts and talking together, Allah, the Great and Majestic, becomes wrathful at this (action).
    Abu Dawud 1:15

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Whoever performs ablution should clean his nose with water by putting the water in it and then blowing it out, and whoever cleans his private parts with stones should do it with odd number of stones."
    Sahih Bukhari 1:4:162

Salman said that (one among) the polytheists remarked: I see that your friend even teaches you about the excrement. He replied; Yes, he has in fact forbidden us that anyone amongst us should cleanse himself with his right hand, or face the Qibla. He has forbidden the use of dung or bone for it, and he has also instructed us not to use less than three pebbles (for this purpose).
    Sahih Muslim 2:505

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: A deputation of the jinn came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Muhammad, forbid your community to cleans themselves with a bone or dung or charcoal, for in them Allah has provided sustenance for us. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade them to do so.
    Abu Dawud 1:39

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) came out of the privy, he used to say: "Grant me Thy forgiveness."[5]
    Abu Dawud 1:30

Usama b. Zaid (Allah be pleased with him) reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) on his way back from 'Arafat got down in one of these creeks (to answer the call of nature), and after he had done that I poured water (over his hands) and said: Are you going to pray? Thereupon he said: The place of prayer is ahead of you.
    Sahih Muslim 7:2942
