The Burda, or the Prophet's Mantle is a qasida (hymn) composed by the great Sufi Shaykh Imam Sharafuddin Muhammad Al-Busiri Rahmatullahi 'Alaih who was born in Misr (Egypt) in 608 A.H. (1212 C.E) and died in 695 A.H. (1296 C.E). He was a disciple of Imam Abu'l 'Abbas al-Mursi Rahmatullahi 'Alaih who was a Khalifa of Imam Abu'l Hasan ash-Shazili Rahmatullahi 'Alaih.
He composed the Burda while suffering from a stroke which had paralysed half of his body. After praying to Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala to heal him, he fell asleep and in his dream recited this qasida to the Holy Prophet Sayyidina wa Mawlana Hadhrat Muhammad Mustafa Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam who touched the paralysed part of his body and threw his mantle (Burda) over him. On arising, he was miraculously cured, the news of which spread far and wide. Hence the qasida came to be called Qasida tu'l Burda and received veneration among all Muslims as a qasida especially approved by the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam. Its verses are often learned by heart and inscribed on the walls of public buildings. It is congregationally recited in the majalis (spiritual gatherings) of the Zaakireen (those who remember Allah Ta'ala) all over the world. It cures diseases as well as purifies hearts if recited with love and devotion.
More than 90 commentaries have been written on this qasida and it has been translated in Persian, Urdu, Turkish, Berber, Punjabi, English, French and German, among other languages.
The Burda is in 10 parts and has 160 verses all of which end in the Arabic letter Meem, hence it is a "Meemiyya". The 10 parts of the Burda are about
Love for Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam
A warning against the desires of the nafs
Praise of the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam
Events occuring on his birth
Praise of the Glorious Qur'an
The "Isra" and "Mi'raj" of the noble Prophet Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam
Repentence, asking forgiveness of Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala and seeking intercession of the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam
Supplication to Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala
Reproduced here are verses 34 to 42 from Part 3 in praise of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him. The translation is by Thoraya Mahdi Allam.
PRAISING THE HOLY PROPHET
Blessings and Salutations
of Allah be upon him
Muhammad, leader of the two worlds
and of Man and the jinn,
Leader also of the Arabs and
non Arabs and their kin.
Our Prophet, Commander of right,
prohibits evil's way,
Yet no one's speech more gentle could be
than his nay or yea.
Beloved by Allah is he upon
whose pleading we depend
From terrors of the Day of Judgement,
which on us descend.
He summoned people unto Allah,
they to him did adhere,
And clung fast to the rope that none
could ever rent or tear.
In morals and features
he, all prophets did exceed,
None could approach his knowledge,
or his bounty e'er precede.
And thus from Allah's Apostle
they acquired and did gain,
A handful of the vast sea
or a sip of gen'rous rain.
So other prophets in their rightful place
before him stand,
Regarding knowledge and the wisdom
that they understand.
He perfect is in traits concealed,
and features bright and clear,
And Man's Creator chose him
as His most beloved and dear.
Too far above all men is he
to have a partner who
Has equal qualities, because
the essence of virtue
That in him lies is indivisible,
and wholly true
Once again the birth of the Glorious Prophet of Islam, Muhammad ibn Abdullah(S) is upon us, on this occasion, it is useful for all people, Muslims and non-Muslims to ponder upon the life of the Prophet(S), and to attempt to learn from what he taught, for without a doubt, Allah sent Muhammad(S) as a Mercy for Humanity, and not just for the Muslims.
From the life of the Prophet Muhammad(S), we can learn the sublime lessons of Islamic Ethics, Manners, Moral Traits and we can see the best example for humanity to emulate on it's quest for Perfection.
On this occasion, the Muslims must attempt to learn and put into practice a very important message, that was expounded by the Prophet Muhammad(Saww), and refreshed by the late Leader of the Muslim Ummah, Imam al-Khumayni(ra). That is the message of Unity. In Quran, Allah, the Mighty, the Wise clearly states:
And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided.
(Quran, Surah Aal-i-Imraan, Verse 103)
Allah is clearly telling the Muslims to rise above sectarian, nationalistic and racial divisions that plague the Muslim Ummah, and lead it towards it's own self destruction. The reason why these divisions are dangerous, is expounded in the Quran, in the story of Satan, and how he was cast from Heaven and how he became amongst those who are arrogant and sectarian. Once again in Quran, Allah says:
And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam; they made obeisance, but Iblis (did it not). He said: Shall I make obeisance to him whom Thou hast created of dust?
(Quran, Surah al-Israa, Verse 61)
We can see clearly that Iblis (who later became known as Satan) was arrogant and also the pioneer of racism and division, where as Allah, has told us our situation, and how we as Humanity should be:
O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).
(Quran, Surah al-Hujuraat, Verse 13)
Allah has clearly stated that humanity has been created from a single male and a single female, and that we have been made into various nations and tribes, however the most important thing, is that these nations and tribes should not be guages for what a person is like, for verily the only guage is that of righteousness and love of Allah.
To make divisions between Muslims, is to follow the line of Satan, and to consider those different to you as inferior as Satan did with Adam, and Allah has clearly warned humanity against following the line of Satan:
Did I not charge you, O children of Adam ! that you should not serve the Shaitan? Surely he is your open enemy,
And that you should serve Me; this is the right way.
And certainly he led astray numerous people from among you. What! could you not then understand?
(Quran, Surah Yaseen, Verses 60-62)
We, as humanity, must learn to respect the divine commandments, however, it should not be at the cost of Justice, and what is being suggested is not a simple and flowery - "we love everyone" - kind of attitude, since this is also an incorrect manner to conduct onesself.
The core for humanity and Muslims in particular, is to follow the middle way, the way between two extremes, and to establish Justice and Truth.
Finally, in Quran, in Surah al-Asr, Allah clearly states the criteria for success as follows:
By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),
Verily Humanity is in loss,
Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy."
(Quran, Surah al-Asr, Verses 1-3)
It is extremely important for Muslims to understand this message of Unity and Truth, that Islam has given, for without a doubt, it is with the Unity of Humanity against those who seek to drag humanity to the level of the Animals, and against those who seek to oppress and destroy the human condition, that humanity will arise revived and with new found strength, that it may establish Justice and Equity upon this temporal existance.
Abu Hurairah Radiallahu anhu reports that the Holy Prophet said,
“Whoever recites the following Durood eighty times immediately after Asr Salaat on Friday,
before standing up from his place, Allah will forgive eighty years of sins and grant him the
reward equivalent to eighty years of worship.”
(Allahumma salli alaa muhammadinin nabiyyil ummiyyi wa-ala aalihi wasallim tasleema)

SELECTION OF DUROOD SHAREEFS
Durood Shareef are equivalent and give full benefits,
but some selected and very promptly accepted and
favoured Durood Shareefs are the following:-
ALLAHUMMA SALLI ALA MUHAMMADIW WA ALA AALI MUHAMMADIN
KAMAA SALLAITA ALA IBRAHIMA WA ALA AALI IBRAHIMA

"O Allah, let Your Blessings come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of
Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious". The famous companion of the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Ka'ab bin Ujrah (radi Allahu anhu), narrates that once it was enquired from Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) as to how blessings should be sent to him. The Prophet
(sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) replied that the blessings be said in the manner (it has been mentioned) above, that is, Durood-e-Ibrahimi.

Every moment and in every breath, bestow complete and the best blessings and perfect peace which is endless on Muhammad, our master, and on his descendants and his Companions, and may, for His Sake, all our troubles and tortures be over, calamities ended, and all our needs fulfilled, all our cherished desires attained, and good ends vouch-saved, and clouds are laden with water through the glorious countenance of Prophet. The perfect blessings and peace on the Prophet's House, his Family and his
Companions every instance in number equal to the count of all things in Thy Knowledge". Durood-e-Nahariya is a great power. If it is recited daily, it will give such strength and power to the reciter that no one on earth will be able to subdue him. It is a grand success in all the affairs of the
world. If this Durood Shareef is recited during days of calamities, Allah Ta'ala will help the reciter from the quarters unknown to the human beings. The reciter will be able to cross every barrier of handicap safely and soundly. In every worldly affair, in every trial and tribulation, success will be his net income.

and closes that which is preceded, who helps truth
with truth, and who guided mankind to Thy straight
path. May blessings of Allah be on him and his Family
and Companions as according to his exalted position
befitting his merit and his high rank".
Actually, this Durood Shareef is in the Holy Quran; but then it was kept a secret. Hazrat Abu-Bakr Siddique (radi Allahu anhu), the first Caliph of
Islam, used to recite it daily without fail. Some narrations say that it is because of this Durood that he was awarded the title of "Siddique" which means "Testifier to the Truth".
Hazrat Abul Muqqarab (radi Allahu anhu) says that a man's total sins will be washed away if he recites Durood-e-Fath for forty days continuously.
Hazrat Shaikh Muhammad Bakari (radi Allahu anhu) says that the recitation of Durood-e-Fath once a day relieves the reciter from the Fire of Hell.
Hazrat Syed Ahmed Hillam (radi Allahu anhu) says that Durood-e- Fath was the most favourite routine of Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam, Sheikh Abdul Qaadir Jilani (radi Allahu anhu) of Baghdad Shareef. The great Saints also say that Durood-e-Fath is actual and real light. Hazrat Sheikh Yusuf Bin Ismail (radi Allahu anhu) says that this Durood Shareef is the greatest mystery of
Allah. It brings 100% success and happiness to the reciter. In fact, this Durood Shareef brings prosperity and favour and solves all the complex
problems by the Grace of Allah. When a man recites this Durood Shareef, the Angels of Allah surround him, mercy covers him and peace starts descending on him.
ALLAHUMA SALLI ALA MUHAMMADIN KULLAMA ZAKARAHUZ
ZAAKIRUNA WA KULLAMA GHAFALA UN ZIKRIHIL GHAFILUN.
"O Allah! Shower blessings on Muhammad and his
children whenever he is remembered by those who
remember him, and shower blessings on Muhammad and
family whenever he is not remembered by the negligent,
and grant him peace constantly in abundance".
This Durood Shareef is called Durood-e-Shafi'i because Hazrat Imam Shafi'i (radi Allahu anhu) used to recite it constantly and he received glad tidings of Jannah in this world. This Durood Shareef is of a very great significance. It brings tremendous prosperity, health, happiness and success in this and the next world. Hazrat Allama Sakhavi (radi Allahu anhu) has written in his book that Abdullah bin Abdul Hakam saw Hazrat Imam Shafi'i (radi Allahu anhuma) in a dream after his death and inquired about life after death. Imam
Shafi'i (radi Allahu anhu) told him that because of the continuous recitation of the above Durood Shareef, Allah Ta'ala gave him the most exalted position of the highest grade in Heaven and forgave him. Hazrat Imam
Muzni (radi Allahu anhu) has also narrated exactly the same story.
This Durood Shareef is of a very great significance. It brings tremendous prosperity, health and happiness and success in this world and the Aakirah.
ALLAHUMMA SALLI ALA SAYYIDINA MUHAMMADIW WA ALA AALI
SAYYIDINA MUHAMMADIN ADADA MA FI ILMIL LAAHI
SALAWAATAN DAA'IMATAN BIDAWAAMI MULKILLAH.
"O Allah! Shower blessings on Muhammad, our master, in
the number that is in Thy knowledge such blessings as
may continue for ever eternal as Thy Kingdom".
This Durood Shareef is of a very great value. If it is recited only once, it amounts to all the rewards of all the Duroods. By reciting this Durood, one gets peace of mind and success in this world as well as in the next. After reciting this Durood Shareef, the reciter can claim that he has recited almost all the Duroods which are in this world known to the people. During days of upheavals, this Durood Shareef brings relief, success and true happiness. It is mostly the Saints and very pious people who recite this Durood
after every prayer. They also recommended this Durood Shareef to all the needy.

"O Allah! Shower blessings on Muhammad, our Master,
and his Family such blessings by means of which Thou
may relieve us of all anxieties and calamities. Thou
may satisfy all our needs. Thou may clean us of all
evils and thanks for which Thou may grant us high
position and high rank and status in Thy presence, and
Thou may lead us to the utmost limit of our
aspirations and capacity in whatever is best in this
world as well as in the world Hereafter, as Thou has
the full Power over everything".
This Durood Shareef is always a cure for all calamities in the world of worldly affairs. It was taught by Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) himself. To recite this Durood Shareef 70 times during days of calamity, turmoil and trouble, is a must. It works wonders. The great Scholar, Saint, Jurist and author, Imam ibn-Faikihani (radi Allahu anhu) says that there was
once a pious man called Sheikh Moosa Zareer (radi Allahu anhu). He embarked on a voyage by ship. Due to a heavy storm, the ship started sinking. All the passengers on board started crying and clamouring, but
Sheikh Moosa Zareer (radi Allahu anhu) went to sleep. He saw the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) in his dream and the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) directed him and the passengers to recite
Durood-e-Tunajjina 1 000 times. Sheikh Moosa Zareer (radi Allahu anhu) got up and started the recitation. As soon as he finished 300 Durood Shareefs, the storm subsided and the ship was saved. The other ship on the
high seas sank, but this ship reached its destination safely and soundly. This miracle was a sufficient eye-opener for the members of the ship. It was by the Grace of Allah Ta'ala and Durood-e-Tunajjina that all
were saved. All the Saints have unanimously given verdict that
Durood-e-Tunajjina is the best cure of all ills and all calamities of this world.
