Resources for Parents with Disabled Children

    Feel free to contribute!

Subhan'Allah, my recent interactions with parents with children with disabilities has really opened my eyes to how difficult life really is, esp trying to juggle the multiple roles.

I have access to lots of information, so Im just making this thread for posters on Ummah to benefit, as I know quite a few of you have children with sort of special needs.

I will be updating this with more stuff, but if you need any more information or need help on anything else then just send me a PM. I cant make any promises, but I will Insha'Allah try my best.

I still havent managed to find anything Islamically respite care appropriate though, which is a shame. Although I know there is a resort in Egypt that caters for disabled Muslim children and their children.......(look up!)

Please contribute your own findings as well Insha'allah.

Re: Resources for Parents with Disbaled Children

This is one of my favourite poems....

    HEAVEN'S VERY SPECIAL CHILD

A meeting was held quite far from Earth
"It's time again for another birth."
Said the Angels to the Lord Above,
"This special child will need much love."

Her progress may seem very slow,
    Accomplishments she may not show
    And she'll require extra care
From folks she meets way down there.

She may not run or laugh or play
Her thoughts may seem quite far away:
In many ways she won't adapt
And she'll be known as handicapped.

So let's be careful where she's sent
We want her life to be content.
Please, Lord, find the parents who
Will do a special job for you.

They will not realize right away
The leading role they're asked to play
But with this child sent from above
Comes a stronger faith and richer love.

And soon they'll know the privilege given
In caring for their Gift from Heaven.
Their precious charge, so meek and mild
    Is Heaven's Very Special Child.

A mother would get the full responsibility of taking care of the young and I am glad that I'm in-charge of taking every step on giving the love and care that a special child like my daughter need. My daughter is not disabled one but I could say she is a special one.

I'm full support all of my life and will continue the support, love and care that I could give to my daughter with no conditions and regrets.

Re: Resources for Parents with Disbaled Children

    BismILLAH hir Rahman ir Rahim,

I forgot to post this, this poem is so humbling masha'Allah and really makes one reflect on the blessings we each have and our own strengths and weaknesses alhamdulIllah

I AM THE CHILD (Author Unknown)
I am the child who cannot talk.
You often pity me, I see it in your eyes.
You wonder how much I am aware of -- I see that as well.
I am aware of much, whether you are happy or sad or fearful,
patient or impatient, full of love and desire,
or if you are just doing your duty by me.
I marvel at your frustration, knowing mine to be far greater,
for I cannot express myself or my needs as you do.
You cannot conceive my isolation, so complete it is at times.
I do not gift you with clever conversation, cute remarks to be laughed over and repeated.
I do not give you answers to your everyday questions,
responses over my well-being, sharing my needs,
or comments about the world about me.
I do not give you rewards as defined by the world's standards -- great strides in
    development that you can credit yourself;
I do not give you understanding as you know it.
What I give you is so much more valuable -- I give you instead opportunities.
    Opportunities to discover the depth of your character, not mine;
    the depth of your love, your commitment, your patience, your abilities;
the opportunity to explore your spirit more deeply than you imagined possible.
I drive you further than you would ever go on your own, working harder,
seeking answers to your many questions with no answers.
I am the child who cannot talk.
I am the child who cannot walk.
The world seems to pass me by.
You see the longing in my eyes to get out of this chair, to run and play like other children.
There is much you take for granted.
I want the toys on the shelf, I need to go to the bathroom, oh I've dropped my fork again.
I am dependent on you in these ways.
My gift to you is to make you more aware of your great fortune,
your healthy back and legs, your ability to do for yourself.
Sometimes people appear not to notice me; I always notice them.
I feel not so much envy as desire, desire to stand upright,
to put one foot in front of the other, to be independent.
    I give you awareness.
I am the child who cannot walk.
I am the child who is mentally impaired.
I don't learn easily, if you judge me by the world's measuring stick,
what I do know is infinite joy in simple things.
I am not burdened as you are with the strife's and conflicts of a more complicated life.
My gift to you is to grant you the freedom to enjoy things as a child,
to teach you how much your arms around me mean, to give you love.
I give you the gift of simplicity.
I am the child who is mentally impaired.
    I am the disabled child.
I am your teacher. If you allow me,
I will teach you what is really important in life.
I will give you and teach you unconditional love.
I gift you with my innocent trust, my dependency upon you.
I teach you about how precious this life is and about not taking things for granted.
I teach you about forgetting your own needs and desires and dreams.
    I teach you giving.
Most of all I teach you hope and faith.
    I am the disabled child.

Re: Resources for Parents with Disbaled Children

Look up my gorgeous likkle facebook fwend 'Lewis Jeynes' and the Lewis Jeynes fund which helps provide special equipment for children with severe disabilities.

Also 'Post Pals' is a service which sets up pen pals for severely ill children (who often lose their circle of friends due to being ill or undergoing treatment and not spending time in school or other activities where most healthy children make friends). Pen pals don't have to be ill themselves but should be incredibly sensitive to the needs of the child (ie sometimes it's not good to be too boastful of your exploits in an outside world which they cannot access themselves) and strong (cos' some of these kids are terminally ill and could die after a couple of years just as you become attached). The person who set up Post pals is a severely ill teenager herself with severe M.E. Parents in particular are very appreciative of postpals for giving their kids something to look forward to, getting letters and gifts from friends to help keep their spirits up.

James, sounds like your daughter is very lucky to have you... btw your name sounds like the TV chef. I consider James Martin to be the King of desserts

    New Chair for Air Travel

An innovative new chair for disabled children for use in passenger aircraft has been launched at an event at the Gatwick headquarters of the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The TravelChair 2012 has been designed by the children’s disability charity MERU and will replace a version designed in 2002. Virgin Atlantic has already placed orders for the TravelChair 2012 and MERU are actively participating in negotiations with several other major airlines.

The TravelChair provides postural support to physically disabled children on board aircraft. The chairs are portable however, and so can be securely installed on board the majority of types of aircraft (including helicopters) on request.

The launch event was attended by representatives from the travel industry, disability groups and major airlines, as well as two of MERU’s patrons, Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen and Richard Stilgoe.

Dame Deirdre Hutton, Chair of the CAA, who hosted the launch event on 22 May 2012, said: “There are nearly a half a million disabled children in the UK. For all of us, flying opens up worlds of possibility. For disabled children its significance can be even greater. It can mean life-changing experiences – like swimming with dolphins – or life-changing treatment. MERU deserve the utmost credit for developing the TravelChair, with its potential to enhance so many young lives.”

High res JPEG images of the launch event are available on request.

For further media information contact the CAA Press on: 0207 453 6030 [email protected].

    here's something:

    http://www.brentmind.org.uk/directory/detail/296

    for mental disorders.

msA, may Allah (swt) give you ajar for helping. there should be more prominent places to assist muslims who have children with disabilities. some family friends we know have a son with down's syndrome. no one from the mother or father's side i believe of the fmaily have this, but both are cousins. so this sort of outcome is always a major risk astghfirullah. this just came about and you can only imagine what they must be going through, thinking about the child's future and and health and how hard it must be for them. may Allah (Swt) give these parents sabr and blessings isA. "Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) occurs when a delay in the development of motor skills, or difficulty coordinating movements,
results in a child being unable to perform everyday tasks. A diagnosis can be made by a medical doctor who will ensure: 1) that the movement
problems are not due to any other known physical, neurological, or behavioural disorders; and, 2) whether more than one disorder may be present. The characteristics of children with DCD, however, are usually noticed first by those closest to the child because the motor difficulties interfere with academic achievement and/or with activities of daily living (e.g., dressing, playground skills, handwriting, gym activities)."

Re: Resources for Parents with Disabled Children

    Assalam aleikoum.
I am a mother of 2 whose eldest daughter is 6 and autistic. I have a blog where I share my experience as a parent and also a couple of ressources. (http://autismtaughtmesabr.wordpress.com/)
I think that there is a dramatic lack of emotionally support for parents of children with Special needs from the Muslim Community. I think that it is mainly due to a lack of awareness ( concerning Autism in particular). This is very unfortunate that we have to find support from non-Muslims when our Deen is all about brotherhood. Instead of complaining, I decided to write so that my daughter could be accepted. I am based in London and except Al Baseera in Forest gate, I don't know any Muslim school who caters for SEN. When I used to bring my daughter to the Moske, it used to be a real struggle to face people looks when my daughter was having tantrums etc...
As Muslims, we have to find excuses to each other, so for me it is all about ignorance and I just hope to help changing mentalities

    Assalamu Alaikum Jenicca,

You are so true about how difficult managing children with special needs can be, Qadr'Allah. I'm not certain as to which disabilities you have had interactions with, but have you visited Autism Sparks? It's a great website with helpful tips for kids with Autism.

    Wa Alaikum Salam Sister

You are speaking from true experience, Masha'Allah. May Allah bless us all to grow more knowledgeable and tolerant of those who have significant differences and disabilities. It can be very difficult for parents of normal-range children to understand why certain children have great difficulty controlling their emotions and actions. It can be even more difficult for them to accept the reaction of the parent who fails to react with strict harshness to manage the child's conduct. I guess that's where being an advocate for our children comes in.

I know a person who is also having Autism. But it's difficult for the parents to grow the children with disability irrespective of their nature of disability.
