But It Does Exist In Islaam.

dhak1yya, I agree with you and everyone else. Muslims do not live in a vacuum. It affects the rest of the world and so, of course, it affects us as well. It cannot be addressed until we accept that it is real and nothing to be ashamed of. I checked out your blog. You should do more with it!

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

Hello, my name is James Cummings and I have for the past 4 years suffered greatly with vicious voices in my head. Please let me explain. I was good friends with a muslim raised man who befriended me at university and we were very close by the end of the final year. I was then asked to come round to his house and meet his brother and family, who smoked a lot of weed. When sitting in their shack at the bottom of the garden my mind started to hear things, and before you knew it I couldn't communicate through the physical plain. As time wore on my mind and body became aware that things didnt come right, and for some reason I feel as though these 2 boys have left their evil 'Jins' with me and taken my own spirit who I loved dearly and who loved me. I don't know much about islam apart from some teachings, and I had several things thrown at me such as the Iblas (devil?) etc and all I do every day is hear their voices from which ever plain they come from and see their twisted smiles in my mind. I even saw some of my spirits move from myself to my 'friends' brother and he sent his my bodies way. I also saw various dreams in which they attacked my family and friends and suffice to say within days of these dreams, everybody stopped looking at me in the same way, and haven't done so since. These 2 'friends' are extremely strong spiritually and taught me of allah, but I know they have also put other spirits upon me as I hear their voices. These are realisations that I have made over time and I have not been the same ever since this happened to me. I have lost my strength, my own will and good nature and have been left with their vicious dealings. I am even aware that I was put under a state whilst in their house which I couldnt get out of and dreams that I remember them telling me about under this state have since come too, but because they put me in this state I havent been able to move forward on my spiritual path in the past four years due to their jions holding me back. If anybody knows anything about this and the dark powers and how to get rid of these forces I would be glad of knowledge and wisdom. I have took to praying to Allah 5 times a day in hope that he would hear my prayers but unfortunately they just seem to fall on deaf ears. I am not sure how much more I can physically take as I see my whole life dying out, and I feel they are using my own spirit for their own gain. Please help brothers and sisters as I asm at breaking point. Peace be with you all.

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

I have also since met spiritual people on my journey who have since told me that Nord and Morad are my lords and that my spirit whithers to their pan. I realise we are all one but they seem to have married me in theri light. I just want to be myself again as allah saw fit, and be able to be on my own path again, as opposed to what they set me. I no longer have sun and no longer feel one. Once I reach what the voices say along with my own, terrible things happen, I have been beaten up, crashed my car hundreds of times and my whole life is falling apart. I can no longer love and feel dead inside. the moment I feel good in spirit, it drains away and I see morad and nord fill up in the spiritual plain. Please please help, as I feel they have married our souls over time. I wish I had listened to my spirit telling me not to go, but as I say they were so strong that they took control of my life and made things happen in meditation if I didnt go along. Such as things happening to my own family. I know somebody can help, so please do.

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

Dear Muslim community. For some reason I have already felt relief, as I feel that some of you may have already prayed for me already, however, I still feel them close. I know some may see this as me being weak or even have gone mad, but I swear that this has happened to me and is still part of me. I pray that as spiritual beings you can help, and that I shall in return pray for you all that helped me, even if I cannot help you in the physical, I shall send you blessing through spiritual. Peace be with you. james

i just registered to point out that psychology is a pretty poorly understood concept in general. that's cool that you want to raise awareness, but all these mental "defects" should be taken with a grain of salt in the process. extreme personalities are just that and don't really need to be classed as abnormal or anything like that imo.

I know someone on this forum who has such health problems bipoar disorder and epilepsy. After nearly 10 years of being a member on this ummah forum ( www.ummah.com ) , they banned him permanently and now he is more alone and isolated then ever. Without understanding or having sympathy for his issue. So yes there is a lack of understanding amongst muslims and you see it on this forum from the people who run it.

I have social anxiety disorder. It started when I was fourteen and it took me ten years to admit to myself that there was "something wrong" with me. Even after that it took me several months to tell my mother I was seeing a therapist. She's still the only one who knows. That's how much of a taboo it is. I agree, awareness would be great.

Assalaamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi Ta'ala wa Barakatuhu...

I want to inquire about "Psychology in Islam"!
How can I solve my spiritual, emotional and psychological weaknesses such as Ignorance, Unawareness, Low-Spirit, Hindered Morale, Dull Intellect, Suppressed Will, Despondency, Fear, Depression, Anxiety, Homesickness, Cowardice, Grief, lack of Self-Discipline, lack of Self-Confidence, lack of Self-Esteem, lack of Self-Awareness as well as i'm Unaware of Current Affairs of the World etc.

How can I solve my physical and physiological weaknesses such as Idleness, Laziness, Dullness, Inefficiency, lack of Athleticism, lack of Talent, lack of Stamina, lack of Strength, lack of Speed, lack of Efficiency, lack of Diligence, lack of Resilience & Adaptability etc.

Maybe I feel myself as a LOSER & ZERO in LIFE.

As a YOUTH, how can I be a WINNER, STRONG, SMART, COMPETENT, ACTIVE & be EVERYTHING in LIFE???

What WAY should I ask Almighty Allah & what should I do?

Please shed some LIGHT!!! Jazakallahu Ta'ala Khairan...

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

Mental health is a serious issue that need not to be taken lightly. We go see the doctors when we experience any sort of physical pain but when it comes to our brains that suffer at times in agony or some inevitable displeasing thought process, we leave it to time and circumstances. This attitude invokes more problems and the prior thing that makes a person hide it is "what will the people say". Seeking formal help regarding the depression you might be facing must not be turned down just because of some stupid social norms.
Love yourself and give your own self importance more than the voices that follow. You on your own can take an initiative and later be an encouragement for your folks who mighyt be in need of some formal counselling.

Faith means belief on any person without proof and in other words it is called hope, trust or belief. In islam faith means the complete submission to the will of Allah in Quran it is stated that
" "Surely, those who believe, those who are Muslims, Jewish, the Christians, and the Sabians; anyone who (1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve."

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

Assalamualaikum, I agree with you wholeheartedly. We need to create awareness. I've searched the internet for Muslim psychiatrists to no avail. I'm trying to help a young female revert who is experiencing voices in her head etc. She's also slightly autistic and it is quite difficult to understand what she's saying at times. She's highly intelligent but it doesn't come across that way because she is unable to articulate her thoughts. She's been to the Imam of a local mosque who feels she might be possessed. I'm not too sure, I think she might be in the early stages of mental illness. I wonder if you could give me leads as to whom I can contact. She's desperate to know what she's going through and I am do not have the skills to assist her further.
    Thank you. Mariani

Sis, what is causing your anxiety?

I've take those anti depressions and they ale EVERYTHING worse sis. The way I got better was by praying, reading books on happiness, getting closer to Allah and Quran and alhamdulillah that worked better than those horrible pills.

No doctor can cure like Allah and no medicine can cure like Quran.

I dont know what is causing my anxiety but I have had it sine i was very young but when moved to uk it got worst maybe becoz i am now away from my family, I do pray 5 times and sometimes recite holy quran, also want to join some islamic classes but cant at the moment because i have small kids,
sometimes I am just fine even those days I am really anxious about evrything but dont have horrible, but some days I am feeling horrible, the things which are worrying me is that I have gone very forgetful which before I had the best memory, I cant concentrate, feeling angry and impatient, sleepy, dizzy,no self confidence, panicking And stress all the time, not enjoying anything, and I have small kids so I just want to feel normal to take care of them better, also Anxiety and depression runs in my family so maybe its why I have it.

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

I think the people who have posted on here asking for help need to realise that whilst the thread was set up in the hope of sharing experiences to help raise awareness regarding mental health- as far as I know, this site does not have contacts with Muslim therapists or psychiatrists that can treat these sorts of problems. The responses you get are most likely going to be from a layperson who may have an interest in this subject and is giving a personal opinion that cannot be construed as medical advice.

May Allah (swt) alleviate your conditions and give you shifa- ameen.

Somaya I was just wondering if you get enough quality sleep? I realise with young kids that can be quite difficult but improper sleep not only affects how tired you get but it will also impact your mood and appetite. Also as for being forgetful, particularly if the forgetfulness occured around the time of pregnancy or after giving birth- this can be due to a deficiency in essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 9 in particular) which I think can be obtained from cold pressed olive oil (omega 9) and oily fish such as sardines, salmon or fresh tuna. It occurs because the baby takes your nutrients either from the umbilical cord or from the breastmilk and if you don't replenish your body's own supply of those nutrients then you end up becoming forgetful.

Also I know this sounds obvious but trying to get a few minutes outdoors in the morning on a regular basis, preferably in a park or natural setting can have a very calming influence and just getting a bit of fresh air. That's my personal opinion (and I don't have kids btw lol) so I could be completely wrong but it was just an idea.

Panic/anxiety and sleep disorders. I find a balance between medication, understanding and spirituality works best. Would also recommend healthy diet and regular exercise (training, sports, running etc.) to keep yourself active and busy.

For those who understand, hope this helps if you were worried about the use of intoxicating medication, without which you risk escalating medical problems.

I have Autism and its many traits such as anxiety, tourette, depression and so on......my life has been very tough on me and though i dont demand any sympathy from my brothers and sisters here i would like to acknowledge that if i am alive today then its truly a miracle of allah.
I still trust the almighty in my affairs and no matter how much disappointments i face i still try to thank him...

Let this be a lesson for all of those who are "normal", Allah has blessed you in so many ways you can't imagine so thank him and pray in front of him

Mental illness do exist for people like me because I also have autism like chatfanatic88. I believe it exists because 1. I have it and I know myself and the traits associated with having autism 2. Life is a test for everyone. Some people have a easier life (easier test) and other don't. Mine is a little difficult so Allah SWT is testing my behaviors as test to see who I will turn to. Will I turn to Allah SWT for help or not? I will try my best to be in the right direction inshallah.

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

I agree that mental health is seen as a topic not to be discussed, or seen as "weak imaan".

I've had few Muslim friends share with me about their depression. but it's almost like a dirty secret they don't want to share because they are not allowed to be depressed if they pray salah. Our ummah has to acknowledge that such issues exist and only then can we look for solutions. I think mental health is seen as a "Western issue".

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

A few tips that have personally benefitted me when it comes to times of stress/depression/etc:

    1. Learning sunnahs of the Prophet in regards to everyday habits. The Prophet was a role model in pretty much every aspect of life. Some sunnahs can seem so insignificant yet have a big impact (for example i started using olive oil and haven't had to worry about keeping hair healthy since Al7amdulillah).

    2. Making dua.

    3. Staying healthy, This includes daily exercise, healthy amount of sleep, etc.

    4. Dhikr as it helps me remove unneccecary thoughts.

Also this helped me alot to identify certain mental illnesses (http://www.al-islam.org/al-tawhid/felicities/4.htm)

The only things that prevent me from taking my own life are it's haram and :

"On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear." Qur'an 2:286

We have to accept we get tested and suffer because of our strength, not our weaknesses and because of all this suffering we'll get rewarded in the next life.

As for the brother who suffered from Jinn I've been attacked about 4 times during my sleep and felt physical pain but was never at any point frightened because I knew how to fight them off. Put your trust in God and they cannot harm you. You'll find some help here.

Most Of The Time I Hear If Your Mentality Ill Due To Your Weak Emaan, Or Jinn - Ayn Evil Eye.

But It Does Exist In Islaam.

How Could I Or We Do To Raise Awareness ? Ideas Please ?
I agree 100% that there is not nearly enough awareness about Mental Health. I used to work in a Psychiatric Hospital and I did meet Muslim patients (quite a few from my nationality). I've heard Muslims tell me that something like Schizophrenia is because of Jinn. I'm not denying that Jinns do affect people but mental illnesses are a separate thing entirely. The brain is an organ like any other, and it gets sick and malfunctions like other organs, the difference is the pervading influence it has on your character and personality. There are biochemical changes in the brain that often leads to the appearance of certain disorders.

I've been thinking for the last four years about ways to improve awareness about Mental Health in the Muslim community. I don't know how, but I have faith that it can be done. My mother and her friends were once terrified of "crazy" people, now she asks me about things like anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bi-polar disorder, and she is understanding that these are illnesses that can affect anyone and is not as scared. I think it truly takes some more exposure. We have to remember that stigma is a problem in society generally (even in the "progressive" West), just look at how people with mental illnesses are displayed in the media, it's almost never good. If you followed the media you would think mentally ill people (especially those with Schizophrenia) are violent and dangerous but they actually aren't, if we looked at the statistics on crimes committed by those diagnosed with mental illness, it's not high at all.

I'm not active in the Muslim community (due to some problems that I am getting counselling for), but a girl I know is very active among muslims and she suggested asking someone from the Psychiatric hospital to come to the Masjid and do a presentation or workshop. The Psychiatric hospital I was at had a Muslim Chaplain and I think most Mental Health facilities have a Spiritual Department and sometimes have an Imam or Chaplain but I'm not sure if they do any outreach, they usually give spiritual advice to patients. Also Sheikh Yassir Fazaga has tried to spread some awareness about this and has done courses on Islam and Psychology .

I hope in the future we can all work towards improving this Inshallah.

I look forward to reading other people's further suggestions

My father's schizophrenia developed after he started messing about with Jinn. I don't believe he was ever possessed but they did make him go insane. In certain cultures you should not dismiss the possibility of Jinns being involved and people need to know what to do when attacked and teach themselves to have complete trust in Allah for protection.

I heave heard this explained as a nightmare by one scholar but I also had intense physical pain followed by a strong, cold chill in the room and on another occasion scratches on my back so I know it was a Jinn attack. Get a cat, they will protect you from Jinn!

    Re: Mental Health & Awareness

    Assalamu'alaikum.

Don't try to cure those who doesn't feel sick.

Have you heard of SEFT (Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique)? Founded by Ahmad Faiz Zainuddin after his research and studies through psychology. I had met with the founder myself and he talk about the same as what you wanna know. The supernatural side of muslim perception for mental illness is unavoidable, but then we must try to solve their problem thoroughly without further explanation which include 'labeling' their illness specifically (ADHD, OCD, etc.). Since the worst case they might antagonize the helper and neglect updated knowledge to help their problems.

Actually this topic is also lead to a question for the therapist. How can we try to cure people with mental health problems whilst they don't even wanna cooperate with us? Because the problem is not those defined by therapist/psychiatry/etc. But the one the subjects actually feel. We must take care of it layer by layer. Until the core of the problems came to surface.

If there's any friendlier method then it's a 'secret love method'. If you might prefer the more Islamic approach. This is maybe the safest you can try without therapist license. The approach is just befriend (or just get closer) with anyone with mental illness without having to tell our purpose, lead them to Loving Allah (actual feeling of love directed to Allah), give them some explanation related to 'love' (further to the unrequited love, "I love You (Allah) whether I feel like You (Allah) have yet to love me.") - positive prejudice, move on to 'love triangle' (the subject, Allah, other people - "I love everything because Allah love creatures Allah has made, so then Allah might love me because I love Allah."), and other steps which must be performed by the therapist specifically. But naturally, it's enough to make people open their heart and consciously cooperate with themselves to cure any mental illness as they've regained their awareness.

I actually did those method for my patients or subjects. You can find parts of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Hypnosis, etc. within that method alone. And without using any drugs.

As the results, my subjects has began to develop healthiness and awareness by themselves. Powered by love.

    Wallahu'alam.

Thanks for the reply (just noticed it when I checked out this this thread). You make a really valid point, and I agree that the possibility of jinn being involved shouldn't be completely written off, people I know were just taking it to extreme and saying you shouldn't seek psychiatric help for it. I hope your father is doing well (or at least stable), it must not be easy for him to be going through. I hope the counselling goes well too, it's actually interpersonal skills training for people with social anxiety but they call it "counselling" because they try to get at more deeper issues you have, I used to never talk to people at all but alhamdulillah I'm getting a lot better (it takes a practice).
