Are watching movies allowed in Islam?

Are watching movies (not adultery or related) allowed in Islam? If yes, what movies can be watched? Please support your facts with evidence when you answer. I will appreciate that.

I'm no scholar BUT I THINK that watching movies is ok if it doesn't stop you from your obligations such as prayers etc HOWEVER the type of movie you watch should be halal and pure without any indecent things.. The only movies I watch are animated ones which are the most safest...

The default shari` ruiling on things not related to `ibaadah is that they are permissible except what Allah has explicitly made impermissible. Movies would be permissible except those that contain impermissible things.

Do we have to mute background music? If so, then how can we watch television when just about every single show has music in some form?

All movies have women that are not observing hijaab. This is an impermissable thing for men to see. I don't think staring at a screen for hours counts as lowering one's gaze.

Wait, you're saying we can't watch movies that have woman not wearing hijaab? What do you watch (if anything other than religious shows)?

Some of us don't own televisions.

Re: Are watching movies allowed in Islam?

    As salaam alaykum,

I think any logical Muslim will conclude that movies are haraam. If I had to provide an evidence for every evil found in movies, I would need to write a book. Any brother or sister wishing to safe guard his or her deen, would stay far away from movies, TV and the like.

As for those who think there isn't sufficient evidence to avoid watching movies in spite of all of the scholars saying it's prohibited, then let him consider these hadeeth:

On the authority of Abu Muhammad al-Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Taib, the grandson of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, and who is dearest to him, radiyallahu anhuma, who said: I committed to memory from the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, (the following words): Leave that about which you are in doubt for that about which you are in no doubt. [at-tirmithi]

On the authority of Abu 'Abdullah al-Nu'man bin Bashir, radiyallahu 'anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, say:

"Truly, what is lawful is evident, and what is unlawful is evident, and in between the two are matters which are doubtful which many people do not know. He who guards against doubtful things keeps his religion and honor blameless, and he who indulges in doubtful things indulges in unlawful things, just as a shepherd who pastures his flock round a preserve will soon pasture them in it. Beware, every king has a preserve, and the things Allah has declared unlawful are His preserves. Beware, in the body there is a flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt, and behold, it is the heart."

    [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]

Thus, the priciple established in these ahaadeeth is that Muslims should avoid the doubtful matter for fear of falling into the unlawful.
    Wa billaahi tawfeeq!

we should encourage ourselves in watching good movies like film production dubai documentary for example so that we could learn something

What about old movies from the 50s and older? They didn't make anything particulars indecent back then. I know there are uncovered women there, but isn't it what we see everyday anyway? And I'll just focus on their face.
