    Salam alaikum VS Assalamu alaikum

Is there a difference in meaning between these two wordings?

I also hear "walaikum salam" instead of "wa alaikum assalam" - is this shortening mostly a subcontinent custom?

No, the Indian version would be "valaykkum salam" and the Pakistani aunty version would "aslaam laikoooooooooooom"

Re: Salam alaikum VS Assalamu alaikum

I hear alot of arabs and turks say salaam to greet others instead of assalumo alaikum, i think you can just put it down to laziness, like sayin mornin instead of good morning.

Salaam means peace and the full translation of the proper greeting would be peace be upon you, i think?

salaam / salaamun alaykum is the indefinite
    assalaamu... is the definite

    not sure which is better...
i know there is a point about ibrahim alayhi salam and the angels in regards to replying the salam in a better way, and salaamun was better in that one but the first one was salaaman which is different

Re: Salam alaikum VS Assalamu alaikum

What about these ones: walaikum assalaam and walaykom assalaam?

Do these different spellings still mean the same thing, or is one spelling preferred over the other?

I've seen these used interchangeably by the same people. Why is that?
Life's actually pretty simple: you just have to enjoy it, pray, do good, refrain from bad, and respect others. Being Muslim is not a disadvantage or an advantage - it's a responsibility.

Because arabic is not written in the latin alphabet. It doesn't matter how you spell it "in english" as long as it's understandable by the reader.

Sure, but when you read those two spellings, the pronunciation varies slightly. I've always wondered if one form of spelling was 'better' than the other, even if they are using the Latin alphabet.

sigh. Again, there are no english writing rules for spelling السلام عليكم since it's not from the english language. If you don't know how the orginial is pronounced then it doesn't matter if you spell it aleikum, aleikom or alaykum you won't figure it out.

Re: Salam alaikum VS Assalamu alaikum

Well, basically, just salam is improper noun while assalam is proper noun. I don't know how correct it is to say salam alaykum and whether there is a difference in meaning. I think in the Qur'an there is the term "salamun alaykum". However, if you use the noun without the proper article "al" then the noun ends in tanwin, so you say salamun alaykum.

It's possible that salal alaykum is informal while Assalamo alaykum is formal.

Re: Salam alaikum VS Assalamu alaikum

    this is an old thread...

I've noticed the salaam walaikum version too - they change the 'oo' sound to 'wa' for some reason.

also seems there is a protocol of one-upmanship on greetings so a salaam will get a reply containing assalaam - a bit like how khuda hafiz is apparently trumped by allah hafiz.

my original question was based on urdu speakers but muslims from other backgrounds probably have their own language quirks too.

    إِذَا جَاءُوهَا وَفُتِحَتْ أَبْوَابُهَا وَقَالَ لَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَا سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ طِبْتُمْ فَادْخُلُوهَا خَالِدِينَ

"when they reach it while its gates have been opened and its keepers say, "Salamun alaykum; you have become pure; so enter it to abide eternally therein," (Quran)

    النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُسَلِّمُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ يَسَارِهِ ‏ "‏ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ ‏"‏

"The Prophet would say the Salam from his right and from his left (saying): As-Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, as-Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah" (Tirmidhi)

    Both are fine.

What screws us up most in life is the picture in our head of how it’s supposed to be.
