    Re: Learning Arabic Resources

An Introduction to Quranic and Classical Arabic: An Elementary Grammar of the Language

An Introduction to Koranic and Classical Arabic is an elementary-level grammar of standard classical Arabic, the literary norm of the Arabic language that has not changed appreciably in fourteen hundred years. An indispensable tool for all who are interested in Islamic religion, science, and literature, the language presented in this book will enable the learner to study firsthand the primary sources of Islamic civilization and the classics of the Islamic Near East.

The grammar is presented clearly and in a logical progression amply illustrated by examples, most of which, along with the readings, have been taken directly from the text of the Koran and the body of hadith (the reports of Muhammad's sayings) and supplemented with extracts from other classical sources.

In the forty lessons all essential features of grammar are covered, and the student will acquire an active base vocabulary of over 450 common words and productive roots, from which many times that number of individual lexical items can be regularly and predictably formed. In the course of readings, passive exposure is given to more than 400 additional items of vocabulary.

    Arabic for Dummies

Unlike most books on the Arabic language, Arabic For Dummies is designed in a way that gives you the most accurate and in-depth information available on the composition of the language. The book is modular in nature; every chapter is organized in such a way that you don't have to read the whole book in order to understand the topic that's discussed. Feel free to jump through chapters and sections to suit your specific needs. Also, every grammatical and linguistic point is explained in plain English so that you can incorporate the concept immediately. I took great care to explain every concept clearly and succinctly.

To provide the best foundation and the widest usage for students of Arabic, Arabic For Dummies focuses on Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which is the most widely used form of Arabic in the world. There are basically three different types of Arabic: Koranic Arabic, local dialects, and MSA.

    Re: Learning Arabic Resources

A New Arabic Grammar of the Written Language

    By J.A. Haywood, H.M. Nahmad

John A. Haywood, the author, spent many years as a British civil servant and academic in Sudan. His grammar is the outcome of a lifetime of study of Arabic. Haywood and Nahmad, as the grammar is affectionately called by students of Arabic, came out in 1965. It is used in universities all over the world, and has been translated into Spanish.

The grammar gives the English grammatical terms, so it is also a useful grammar for anyone teaching English in the Middle East where English can be simplified by pointing out its differences with Arabic. Arabic is a much older language than English and has dropped most of the awkward complexities that English still has in favor of a logical simplicity that was, one might say, codified, in the Abbasid period in Iraq in the 9th century AD. The enumeration of the differences between English and Arabic for the purpose of making English easier for Arabic speakers has yet to be done, but Haywood’s grammar would provide a starting point and a skeleton for such an endeavor.
Haywood and Nahmad provide the Arabic terms in brackets (one time) for the grammatical points he mostly describes in English, of course. You have to know your English grammar from the old school pretty well. There are none of the modern English grammar neologisms such as “Demonstrators” for indefinite or definite article, or “helping verb” for present and past perfect. There is no present or past perfect in Arabic. As in yet another language which is older than English, French, these problems have dropped by the wayside in the Arabic language, and Arabic has only the present, the past, the future and the “command” forms. A better example of what I mean by the fact that you have to know the “real” basis of English grammar, and not the neologisms, to appreciate this book, is that you have to know what subjunctive and jussive mean, for example.

Some of the most judiciously researched parts of the book are the introduction and the selections from Arabic Literature. His selection reads like high points of Arab, and thus, “humanity’s” culture: Ibn Khaldun, The Arabian Nights, Tawfiq al-Hakim’s “Diary of a Country Prosecutor,” for example.

A Grammar of the Arabic Language

No other English-language grammar of the Arabic language is as comprehensive as this classic reference. The sine qua non resource for English-speaking students wishing to master the intricacies of Arabic, it has served as an indispensable aid for over a century. Unlike many more recent grammars, this volume contains virtually no inaccuracies or errors. Although it is purely a reference grammar, it cites many examples of sentences, phrases, and figures of speech from the best classical Arabic prose and poetry. Three indexes assist in finding words, constructions, and grammatical categories amid a wealth of information.

    Re: Learning Arabic Resources

    Rosetta Stone Arabic Level 1 & 2

The Rosetta Stone replicates the give and take of learning that occurs when the native language is acquired: words become associated with objects and ideas because they are introduced in a context where meaning is clear and reinforcement is immediate. The Rosetta Stone uses thousands of carefully selected pictures to create its context of meaning. The program elicits the student's response and gives instantaneous feedback, confirming the comprehension that has taken place. The program has been developed as a carefully sequenced, step by step process - as words build to phrases, sentences and dialogs, new vocabulary and syntax are progressively integrated in a systematic, natural flow. Users work exclusively in the target language because The Rosetta Stone depends on pictures to create its context of meaning. It uses the mind's innate ability to directly associate sound to meaning, without translation into the native language of the learner.

    Instructions:

    1) Download the files (ar_level1.rar and ar_level2.rar).

    2) Extract the files using WinRar (into a new folder on your computer named Arabic).

    3) Now you have two options - you can either mount the image files that were just extracted or you can burn each image on a seperate CD.

    (i) To mount the Image files you should download Daemon Tools. (get it here: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php )

    (a) install the software and run it.
    (b) once u run it.. it will apear at the bottom right hand side of ur screen (where the time appears, along with MSN/Yahoo Icons (if u have them installed and running)).
© when you see it there right click on the icon with your mouse, and click on the 'Virtual Cd/DVD Rom' option.
    (d) there should be 'Device 0 and Device 1' and they should say 'No Media'.. if there isn't 2 then there should be an option asking u to 'set number of virtual devics', so set it to 2 Devices.
    (e) once you have 2 Devices - go to the first one and click 'Mount Image', then go to the folder where you had extracted the files for Level One Arabic and select the file that appears in that folder.
    (f) now go to the second Device and select the file from the Level 2 folder.
    (g) after you have completed those steps go to 'My Computer' and check to see that you have 2 new CD/DVD Drives (one for each file you mounted).
    (h) you can double click on the first of the 2 new drives and it should take you through the Installation.
    (i) and when that is done - just run the program and start learning Insha'Allah.

(ii) To burn the Image files I reccomend downloading Nero but any CD burning software should do.

    (a) install the software and run Nero Express (or whatever software you use for burning).
    (b) now find the option for Burning Disc Image or Saved Projects.
© once you get there select the Image.CCD file for the Arabic level you want to burn and burn the disc.
    (d) then burn the Image.CCD file for the remaining level.
    (e) now just pop the 1st CD in and start installing.
    (d) and put in the 2nd CD when it asks you to for Arabic.
    (e) now just run the software and don't lose the CD because you will need it whenever you want to use the software.

    Download 1 (ar_level1.rar = Arabic Level 1)
    Download 2 (ar_level2.rar = Arabic Level 2)

    Enjoy!

    Re: Learning Arabic Resources

Mashaa'Allah, came across two excellent PDFs which present a list of words and their meanings (including verbs, nouns & particles) which apparently comprimise around 80% of the Qur'aan.

    They can be found here:

    Part 1
    Part 2
