    Why is the eating of pork forbidden in Islam?

    First and foremost, the answer to questions of this nature is, because it is mentioned in the Qur’an;

    "Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah” (Al-Qur’an 5:3)

    A muslim is satisfied with as his answer because the Muslim knows that Allah in his infinite wisdom has prohibited something because there is benefit in the prohibition.

    But we find Muslims, are not the only ones who should be avoiding pork, we find in the Bible, in the book of Leviticus

    "And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".

    "Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you."
    [Leviticus 11:7-8]

    and there are other quotes to further emphasise the prohibition in the bible.

    But that still doesn’t answer the question why?

    Well, scientific studies have shown that eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases, from roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, tapeworm.

    But you say, many of these can be avoided if the pork is cooked properly,

    Well in a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, (a disease commonly associated with pork consumption) twenty two had cooked the pork very well.

    Some may argue that in western countries, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. However by nature the pig is used to filth, and even in “clean” conditions they eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.

    So why is the eating of pork forbidden in Islam? Well because Allah tells us to, and as science slowly advances, the prohibition can begin to be better understood by those who don’t believe.
